For better or worse, David Samson was intimately involved in making many of the most important decisions in Miami Marlins franchise history. He’s got some explaining to do, plus some fascinating insight into the present and future of the Fish. Ely Sussman and Isaac Azout spoke with Samson about the re-hiring of Jeff Conine, the dismissal of Glenn Geffner, the consequences of Sandy Alcantara winning the NL Cy Young award, the regrets he has regarding payroll, roster construction, burning bridges with fans and community leaders, and what it will take for Bruce Sherman’s administration to have more sustainable success.

Fernandez’ death imo still casts a shadow over the team. Great job guys on giving Sampson his best Marlins themed interview since he left the team. Good on him as well, for calling out the disorganization of the front office. The lack of respect for the chain of command and a meddlesome ill informed owner is a recipe for disaster.

He’s not happy about it. He said they picked everything very intentionally to reflect the city of Miami. And he feels Jeter is tearing that all down and trying to make it Nee York

David is an amazing person. He cared and ownership basically tossed him off the plank. David can’t get a job now because of he’s been basically saying shit that most owners would hate. David wasn’t the problem. David Sampson hatted Jeter and that ownership group. The Marlins should extend some level of management too David.

Corporate presence is why I think Charlotte, NC is going to be a sneaky frontrunner to get an mlb team. They have 13(!) Fortune 500 companies stationed there for luxury suites and sponsorships, a large metro, and the White Sox AAA affiliate's stadium is downtown on a plot of land big enough to build a major league stadium. They are primed for Major league baseball.

I think Samson has the introspective mea culpa routine down pat, having years to create that persona. Interestingly, though, I agree with him on his window of opportunity theme and how that has to play into team payroll. This is especially true for so-called small market teams. It does apply to Tampa Bay, Oakland, and Miami. On the other hand, his Jeffrey-had-to-write-checks could be true, but we all know it is not the entire picture. There are tax ramifications, for one, to take into account. The other is asset appreciation. We know Loria paid $158.5 million for the team when coming from Montreal, where he acquired the Expos for a relative song. So, the $1.1 billion sale of the Marlins (net of any paper expenses like depreciation, etc.) represents a monterous, almost obscene

I disagree with the characterization of Miami as a "small market"....there is a population of 6 million between Miami-Dade County & Broward County.

I'd like to hear a Part 2 ONLY if you press David on details as to why he strong-armed the city council into financing a new Marlins ballpark. I'd also like to hear you interview Dan LeBatard and ask him why - during Dan's Miami-only show - he was a cheerleader and not a journalist towards David when David was strong-arming the city council.

The greatest mistake this team ever made (and there are so many to choose from) was trading Cabrera to the Tigers on year before the stadium was built. The excuse at the time was that they could not afford Hanley and Miggy! Who thought Hanley was the future HOFer and icon to build the team around. Poorest judgment ever!!!!

Profit for Loria. Adding insult to injury is the stadium taunting of the Miami citizenry and government.

excuse me but what do these punks know about the application of analytics and whether more brainiacs is better? really, where is the guarentee that more staff means better results? samson is being awfully generous with this ely pushback on samson's take on this topic. look at the last decade and show me where a small market team with limited budgets has won anything? always the same teams, the same results. children.

This was hard to listen to as a life-long Marlins fan or technically since I was 11 when the franchise first came into existence. I don't expect anyone to care about my opinion but David Samson is too stubborn and petty to lead a pro sports team. Also he doesn't take real accountability and that is a terrible quality for leadership. He's more of a politician or attorney than anything else and as a fan of the team I resent the fact that he couldn't put aside his pride and ego and just fully devote himself to continuously making the Marlins a better franchise from the top down, year by year.

His entire list of regrets was nothing but bringing up other people's failures. Frickin embarrassing. No accountability whatsoever and he's gonna sit there and say "I've changed".
