Omar is the most charismatic and memorable character, but Freamon and Colvin are probably the ones most worth emulating. Competent, creative, focused, and unconcerned with glory or recognition.

His book "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" was great. He spent a year as an embedded journalist on the Baltimore PD Homicide Unit. Really sad and really funny. Jay Landsman is a real guy and a lot of the stuff on The Wire was based on what David Simon saw there, like the cops using a printer or something as a fake lie detector machine to fool the dumbass suspects into confessing.

If you never read his book Homicide Life on the street You should go and read it right away. A lot of the characters in the wire are based on real police men. He spent a year with the Baltimore homicide squad and then wrote about his experience. It is one of my favorite books of all time. He is just a incredible writer and can turn a story about inner city Baltimore Maryland and make it so it is relavent to the masses. I love the wire and I am going to watch the series again from front to back because it is incredible. Thank you for opening up a dialogue about the criminal system in the United States.

thegodinhere I actually feel the same way. Michael (as others were) was a fascinating character; a great depiction of a character who was forced to evolve at a rapid pace by the harsh and dark realities of his environment and the people around him. It was sink or swim; survival of the fittest. The extent of his will [to survive] was evident in the scene where he got the jump on Snoop and blasted her in the SUV; then disappeared into the shadows. His story arc stands out to me whenever I reflect on the show!
