Ganz offensichtlich geht es hier um etwas sehr Persönliches, ja vielleicht ist diese sechste Sinfonie Gustav Mahlers „Heldenleben“. Ob der Beiname, die „Tragische“ authentisch ist, kann nicht mit Sicherheit gesagt werden. Mit einem Mal, aber schon ziemlich früh, ist diese Hörhilfe da. Auskünfte über ein mögliches Programm hat der Komponist allerdings besonders hartnäckig verweigert, stattdessen spricht er von dem „Rätsel“, das dieses Werk noch nachfolgenden Generationen aufgeben werde. Der enigmatische Charakter der Sechsten zieht die Zuhörer magisch an, ganz abgesehen davon, dass die Monumentalmaße etwas Überwältigendes ausstrahlen. Allein der vierte Satz sprengt mit seinen gut 30 Minuten fast die Dimensionen des Ganzen. Der Weg zu diesem katastrophischen Schlussstück ist gezeichnet von einem ständigen Auf und Ab, das formal in eine geradezu „klassische“ viersätzige Sinfonie eingepasst ist. Die Zuhörer machen ihre eigenen existentiellen Erfahrungen.

It's good to see you conduct again, David Zinman. I have watched you many times at Meyerhoff in Baltimore. You gave some of the most satisfying performances of the repertory, including the introduction of period performance practice (ornaments). But most memorable for me was your rendition Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony.

The andante of the colossal symphony is like a green glade surrounded by active volcanoes. Its andante, besides that of Tchaikovsky's symphony No. 5, readily brings my tears

Makes the 6th sound better than I've ever heard and when I attended his concert of the 3rd in Lyon, it was the most memorable thing I've ever attended. Jennifer Johnson, who sang that day, said working with Zinman was a dream!

Klare und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser großartigen Sinfonie mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt synchronisierten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt ruhevoll. Der erfahrene Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Wahrlich bewundernswert!

Замечательный оркестр, хороший дирижёр, но лучшее исполнение симфонии N6 у Курентзиса. Это эмоционально, проникновенно и незабываемо. Хочется слушать всегда

I listened this performance for the 8th time and now i recognize a great Maazel's influence on Zinman! Amazing, now i understood how amazing is this performance!

The Scherzo should be the second movement as it carries on Mvt. 1, in an almost sarcastic fashion. The Andante moderato plays better as Mvt. 3 because it is a haunting rest, a sort of casting memory back before the tragic storm of the finale. Mahler himself wrote it as 'Scherzo-Andante' but only reversed it later in performance to bring the 'melodic' movement sooner for the audiences of his day. He believed it would help its success with the public. He was also superstitious about this symphony, portending death -- that's also why he eliminated the third hammer blow. It should be performed as he originally wrote it (it works better, particularly in regards to the key changes) -- not as fear dictated him to change it in performance. Zinman should have performed it in the 'scherzo-andante' order.

Ich weiß ja das Mahler mit sich selber nicht einig war ob das Scherzo an zweiter oder dritter Stelle kommen sollte. Aber ich persönlich werde immer Dirigenten bevorzugen, die das Andante an dritter Stelle spielen. Das hat zwei Gründe: 1. Es entfaltet eine viel größere Wirkung wenn es erst nach dem Scherzo kommt. Denn dann ist die Sinfonie bis dahin immer bloß unruhig und düster gewesen. Wenn dann das Andante kommt ist es wie eine ruhige Insel im Sturm. 2. Das Finale beginnt in c-moll bevor es dann nach a-moll moduliert. C-moll als parallele Molltonart zu Es-dur steht in viel direkterem Bezug zum Ende des Andante als zum Ende des Scherzo.

The andante before the scherzo have nothing to do with fear. It has to do with the balance between the movements and contrast between the movements. He never performed it any other way during his entire lifetime publicly, and his second and third published editions maintain that order and are the only authorized editions of the symphony,.

Didn't he revert to the original order for the Viennese premiere in 1907? I don't think we can be final about it either way.

That’s nonsense. If you would study this piece you could notice that the Andante works much between the Scherzo and the Finale. Many conductors prefer this order and they known why.

@@klausbaden Mahler himself conducted the symphony with the Andante second. Did he not understand his symphony as well as later conductors?

@@legron121 He would constantly change his mind about the order of the inner movements, tried to find better ways to balance the work. I personally prefer a relief (andante) before the finale. For me it works much better, but it's honestly the just matter of preference, i feel no need to argue about this

@@user-cd6xn4fy7c In my understanding Mahler changed his mind about the order once, just before the first performance, but always conducted the piece with the "Andante" following the "Allegro energico". In any case, I agree: It's a matter of preference. The point of my reply wasn't to say that anyone is wrong to prefer the Andante between the Scherzo and the finale, but to express my disagreement with the claim that "if" you study the work, you'll notice that the Andante works better between the Scherzo and the Finale. There are plenty of people who've studied the work and prefer the alternative order (such as the conductor in this video).

Dass es immernoch Dirigenten gibt, die sich bei der Fülle der wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen über die richtige Reihenfolge der Sätze für die falsche entscheiden ist sehr traurig. Davon abgesehen ist es, für meinen Geschmack, an einigen stellen schleppend und wirkt erschöpft; es fehlt das Feuer, doch diese Art der Interpretation ist durchaus auch zulässig. Die Stärke von Mahlers Musik ist ja eben, dass sie so verschieden aufgeführt werden kann und trotzdem immer Mahler raus kommt.

1:11:23 Ich sehe Herr Zinman lässt diese Stelle immer noch genauso falsch musizieren wie auf seiner Aufnahme mit den Zürichern. Mahler schreibt "Vorwärts!" also accelerando bis zu dem Punkt wo wieder die Musik der Einleitung mit dem Tam-Tam hereinbricht. Nichts davon passiert, das Tempo bleibt gleich. Und wer ist eigentlich der Idiot der nach diesem Ende in die Stille erstmal Bravo reinbrüllt? Da kann man doch echt mit warten bis sich alle aus der Erstarrung geklatscht haben.

Wenn ein Dirigent wirklich einen Fehler beim Partiturlesen macht, glaubst du, dass die 100 Musiker ihn nicht darauf hinweisen würden? Die sind schließlich auch nicht dümmer als du. :) Gruß, Quotenbrahmsianer

@@andantecomodo1767 Ich schätze du hast noch nicht in einem Orchester gespielt. Dirigenten geben vor, die Musiker folgen. Diskussionen darüber, ob eine Spielanweisung des Komponisten ignoriert wird, finden in der Regel nicht statt. Es wird schon mal diskutiert ob da ein Druckfehler im Material ist, oder ein Rhythmus anders betont gehört. Aber die Tempi, die der Dirigent vorgibt, werden nicht in Frage gestellt.

Must of have put the work in rehearsal or Orchestra know the piece well, because I thought the conducting .. well... nothing special .

1. The majority of the work a great conductor and orchestra does is in the rehearsal. It is the most difficult part. 2. To technically execute this score and pace it, even before the music, is very difficult. It also takes great strength and tremendous stamina many people never have. 3. David Zinman has won many awards including 3 Emmy's, several ECHO's, and has taught countless young conductors who are working and have won important competitions (including myself). Obviously, someone more knowledgable than you thinks he is special. Oh well, I guess even great master's can go unappreciated.

It's a shame. Zinman used to be one of the world's great conductors, unfortunately the world only really woke up to it recently, and he's clearly too ill now to take advantage of it the way he might have 25-30 years ago. When he was younger he was so electric and in control of the orchestra that he could have been mistaken sometimes for an American Carlos Kleiber. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptWlfLWm3a63j6M.html
