I own an EOS 1Ds Mk III. Beautiful camera. I used mine for about 12 years. I just turned 77 this year. I still own it but it's now too heavy to carry. I switched to a 6D Mk II.

Hello David, congrats on your beautiful channel and retro camera reviews! I want to add my "2 cents" at this video. I am an owner of Canon 1D mark III since 1 year, I have bought one second hand and I want to tell you why. Well back in its day it was top of the line camera with every possible feature in int. In present day I am using it as a tool for "going back to the basics" idea of photography. Being an owner of Canon R6, I can say that function wise the 1D III is outdated; but it shoots great photos and had a good auto focus system. The image quality as you said is the "old Canon color" science, which I absolutely love. Are you still using this camera? Best regards, Rareș

The 1D Mark III had a reputation of having a terribly flawed AF system. I recall complaints from photographers at the Australian Open tennis where the III did pretty well with action, but during award presentations would not hold focus on the non-moving subjects. The fact that it was blisteringly hot also had something to do with the bad AF. In any case a few years later I had the opportunity to buy a used III and the owner allowed me to try it out. I shot a pro basketball game with the III during the first quarter and then switched (just in case) to my 1D Mark IIN for the second. At half time I uploaded the III's card and had a look. They were terrific, and I didn't even bother to upload the other card. The whole time I had the III the AF gave me no problems. Were there any shots out of focus? Of course, and that's always going to be the case with any camera. But the AF from my IIN was the best AF I had ever used and the III's was just as good, or better. Now I wasn't faced with using the III under extremely hot temperatures so that may still have been a problem.

Really appreciate the video, found one in really good condition this week ther I i could get for about $250. I was wondering if it was still worth it as a travel/backup camera. No other cameras feel as satisfying to use as the 1D series for me. I also love the blue backlight and the slightly more compact body vs the 1DX. A note on the third party chargers, I absolutely agree on avoiding them. These batteries use 3 internal cells, and fhe first party chargers have 6 poles, 3 positive and 3 negative to balance the charge of all the cells. All the third party chargers I've seen, even name brand ones like Nitecore only have two poles and charge the battery as if its one big cell, which can lead to overcharging or undercharging individual cells. Very bad for both battery life and safety. I do wish the older bodies had a way to check shutter count in camera like the 1DX models though.

Well I can tell you I was one on the waiting list to get this camera back in 2007 and it was 4700 $US just for body.I also made prints 50x70 cm without a problem of professional golfers since I could chose best pic from 15 shots/second burst.Your expression "mat colours"I would rather say film simulated colours are more natural compering with today sensors especially mobile phones one.It's like when you eat instant soup with mushrooms with strong artificial taste and when you eat proper soup with real mushrooms inside taste is more mild and light and closer to nature that surround us .With good Canon and Zeiss glass and enough light this camera is still very good today and I use mine all the time .And since most people are viewing pictures from 27" -14" monitors before to 7" now megapixels are relative...

Thank you very much for putting in the effort into sharing your story and experience as well as for watching, very much appreciated it. :-) Yes, this camera is still more than capable to produce really nice results and it is also still a very reliable camera that many photographers still can trust. Shooting film myself I would not dare compare it to the film colours but earlier professional DSLRs definitely do produce matt colours for sure and of course, one of the main reasons for that is "film look" was a standard at a time where manufacturers want to achieve to be able to gain trust from professional photographers so that they can switch from film to digital. But nowadays, matt digital look from that era is definitely in it's own category rather than being a film look. But other than that, yes this sensor does produce great detail images that you can definitely print large size images with. Thank you very much again for sharing your story and experience as well as for watching, really means a lot. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

I think that it has more of a classic digital look than film look. It is a bit pixelated when compare to professional films but the sensor produces more mat looking images than modern cameras which gives it a bit more vintage look. :-) Thank you very much for watching and have fun shooting :-)

@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bembeleke Yes, you are right. It's simply that people were more used to the film look and even at the time, most films provide more dynamic range than most digital cameras. So having a digital camera that can emulate at least a bit of the film look would help at least professional photographers to trust the camera more... It is very similar story to when mp3 players were first released and it sounded nowhere as good as even portable tape/cd players...

just order an "good" condition Canon eos 1d mark iii, waiting on it to be delivered. After researching what I have (Canon EOS Rebel 3Ti) I read it (3Ti) is an entry level camera, but when I got the camera, it was upgrade from what I had. But because I am shooting a lot of wildlife and sports lately, even through the Canon eos 1d mark iii is older, Mark iii should be better that kind of shooting.

Congratulations on the camera! I am sure you'll be able to produce some really nice images with it. :-) The 1d mark iii is indeed an older camera but when use it properly, it is still a great camera that can actually still deliver great results. :-) Sure, there are some technological limitations being and old camera but this camera is still very reliable and offers a lot of professional features for action photography. Furthermore, the colour science is still good and if you are printing no bigger than A3 or only sharing your pictures on social media, then the 1d mark iii is still a very capable and tough camera. :-) Thank you very much for watching as well as for sharing your story, very much appreciated it! :-) I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

Thank you for watching and also for sharing your story! Really appreciated it. :-) Also, congratulations on your Canon eos 1d Mark III, it is still a great camera albeit with some limitations. The camera will still deliver really unique looks and most importantly, it is still a fun camera to use. :-) The original 1d is also a nice camera to use. I tried using it in some of my professional shoots and though the results are obviously not as good as even the more modern entry level cameras (technically speaking), the look coming out of the camera is still rather quite unique. :-) With the price decreasing as well as it slowly becoming harder and harder to find, I still highly recommend you getting the original 1d as well and give it a try. :-) There are many limitations but because of how "different" of a workflow (and patient) the camera requires, you might enjoy the process a long the way. :-) Thank you very much for watching and for sharing! I hope you have a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

@@DavidCuhls haha thanks mate, today i have tested my new 1d m iii for the first time - and the first 1d in my hands. Love the handling, but holy f... the monitor is not very good against my 5d mark iv. :D i have some problems to interpret the sharpness but on the computer the pictures looks better than expected. And another thing i have used it with the 24-105mm L works well and my Tamron G2 70-200 2.8, but on the Tamron the 1D overexposed some shoots, i have to put 1 or 2 stops down, have the cam problem with the tamron? Or any idea how i can fix this? I have shoot today some horses, the 1d is very fast, jesus. :D
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your new cameras and I am glad to hear that you are enjoying your cameras. :-). I think that the overexposing is not really a problem with Tamron specifically. Sure, many lenses can interfere with the exposures (especially when an old camera of the 1d might not have the lens profile of Tamron in the system) but on the other hand, there is also something to do with the metering system of the camera. This can be fixed by changing the metering system but often, it is also something that you might need to get used to it since the metering in these older cameras aren't so accurate... But otherwise these cameras are still indeed really fast cameras and still very reliable in many situations. :-) Thank you very much for sharing your update and story, much appreciated! :-)

I want to get 1D mark iii for street photography. I have the 5D Classic, but I want faster auto focus. What do you think? Do you think this would be a nice upgrade? I don’t mind the size. I use my 5D with a battery grip 😅. Plus I love the crop for a little reach.
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
I think that if you don't mind the size and would like to have that extra reach, then the 1d mark iii might be a good option for you, especially it is faster than the 5d and it will also give your images a unique look as well. :-) Furthermore, the live-view function might come in handy in certain conditions as well. That being said, when doing street photography, the 1d mark iii will be a much louder camera than the 5d, so be aware of that and also, the 1d mark iii does not have auto ISO function, so in some scenarios, it might not be as practical as the 5d. In lowlight or tricky lighting scenarios, I recommend using a single autofocusing point on the 1d mark iii for a much faster and accurate focusing, otherwise the 5d might be better at autofocusing in lowlight or tricky lighting scenarios if all af points are activated... If you don't mind the setbacks, then the 1d mark iii is a solid option as well! :-) The look is unique, you can explore the features that this camera offers that the 5d doesn't and take advantage of it in street photography. :-) Thank you very much for watching, hope you have a great time and have fun shooting! :-)

@@DavidCuhls Gosh David. I have to say, I’m absolutely in love with this camera. Just the build quality alone gives me chills. It’s so fast and sudden with the shutter release. The focus is so fast. I’m in love. And I love that the files are so small. They don’t take up so much space. The only thing I could possibly think of going is maybe going to a Canon 1D Mark four. But I’ve read in the reviews the Canon 1D Mark three has better auto focus, particularly in low light. Yes the mark four has higher resolution. But I guess that’s the trade-off. I’m not into heavy cropping if I can help it so the higher resolution may serve me better at certain times. I think this 1D iii is my perfect camera. As my beater second camera I have a Canon 30D. Putting the 40 mm pancake lens gives me a 64 mm equivalent. I use the mark iii with the 50 mm lens which gives me a 65 mm equivalent. So basically I can try to master this focal length For street photography. What do you think about the one D Mark four? What do you think about the 1DS Mark three? I’m just curious. Are you thinking about purchasing them as well?

I am glad you are loving the 1d mark iii and yes, it is still a robust camera that produces really robust small files. :-) Got to love that about this camera! The 30d is also a nice combo together with the camera, I am looking to get it too but since the prices of the 30d has risen a bit in the are where I live, I think I will wait. I really would love to get the Canon eos 1d Mark IV and the 1ds Mark III, they were and still are 2 of my dream cameras that I really want to get. But in the past year, the price of these two camera that risen, just like the 30d, so I think i will wait and keep on hunting for a really good deal. Though I've never owned the 1d mark IV and the 1ds Mark iii but I have experienced shooting (main pictures) with them before and "oh my god!", they are a dream to shoot with. I am not sure about the problem of the AF of the 1d mark iv but from what I remember, it was the 1d mark iii that had the AF problem and the 1d mark iv not only came out with a higher resolution and the video function but it specifically came out to fix the big AF problem of the 1 mark iii. During my time of shooting with the 1d mark iv, the AF of the 1d mark iv, as I can remember it, is so much more accurate and much (much!) faster than the 1d mark iii. Furthermore, the files are also much cleaner as well. The experience of shooting with the 1d mark iv is unforgettable. That being said, for street photography, I do love the sound of the 1d mark iii much more than the 1d mark iv~~ haha :-) But the screen of the 1d mark iv is also so much better than the 1d mark iii when shooting outdoors as well~~ The 1ds mark III is a classic to me. I loved shooting with it. Though I don't really like the shutter sound but it had a classic unique digital look to it that I cannot explain. The built quality felt nicer than the 1d mark iv and the just the entire operational side of things from this camera is also nice. The AF is roughly the same as the 1d mark iii but no where near as sensitive as the 1d mark iv, but that's alright because it's meant to be a studio camera (hence the "s" in the name). This camera is also a camera that I would not say a bad thing about it and can't wait to one day (when the price drops again) to own it... :-)

@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
Nice to hear that you used to live here in the Netherlands and congrats on the gear you just got from your girlfriend. :-) I think that you can really take so many amazing images with the setup that she gave you. I understand what you mean by the value you especially on the lens department, you really have nice lenses to start off. They are really sharp lenses that will produce really good contrast as well. Being f/2.8, they will let in a lot of light thus you can take pictures in lower lighting environment without having to use higher ISO settings that would otherwise make your images a little bit pixelated or soft... I think for street photography, depending on the style you are after, you can definitely get many kind of perspectives out of the those lenses albeit you may have to get used to the size of your setup when shooting street photography. I usually like to shoot with either a really wide angle lens or use a 70-200mm at 200mm f/2.8 and there you can get some really nice shots with good isolation as well.. But your style could be really different as well:-) The 1d mark iii may not have a high megapixel count but I am sure that it is more than enough for general purposes. The camera does offer really nice autofocusing system and also a nice burst rate which will allow you to shoot in many type of scenarios as well.. maybe add in a 40mm STM f/2.8 or a 50mm f/1.8 STM will get your setup a bit more portable but otherwise, I think you are pretty well-off. :-) That being said, if you want something that is portable, this setup maybe a bit overkill... Maybe it's best to go with a smaller camera and that way you might be more attempted to take the camera out and shoot more often than with a bigger camera :-)

It’s mad when you refer to cameras of today as modern when comparing them to the 1D Mark III. This is only 13 years ago. This was a big deal camera at the time. This was everywhere at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. You can still get great use of this camera. To say that the original 1D as combination when you press the buttons & it’s not practical is such an over the top statement. You get used to it. These are small things to over come. People have been spoiled in the last decade with the quick turn around of cameras.

I don't think that I said that you can't get great use out of these cameras. You can get great use out of any of the 1d cameras and I even made a video about how I shot a paid event with the original 1d. Yes, there are features and procedures on this camera (as well as the original 1d) that is kind of impractical, for my, those opinion stays (as mentioned in the title, "my thoughts"). For example with the original 1d, I would have to hold down the "select" button and use the wheel just to go through the menu, I have to old down iso button the entire time while using my right hand to change the iso, etc. Didn't have to do that on the 10d... Yes, you can get used to it but it does slow down the workflow quite a bit and it requires more to operate on just some simple functions... Photographers use this camera for sports, weddings, portraits and much more and in many cases they might have to also spontaneously use a flash/reflector/etc. with another hand... So being able to change your crucial settings as fast as possible would be helpful. I don't think it's madness to call some of today's cameras modern when compare to some camera from even over ten years ago. Many technologies have come a long way since and it's all to help getting the shot, documenting the stories and create that piece... That being, please don't get it confused that about the capability of the original 1d series cameras. Just because there are modern technologies available does not decrease the performance/capabilities of the original 1d series of cameras by any means. I still enjoy shooting with them and they do deliver more unique images than modern day cameras as the original 1d series cameras can produce images that seems to have more characters to them... Thank very much for watching and also for sharing your opinion. I do understand your points and also understand where you are coming from. I also hope that you know that I was only sharing my thoughts and was not making a review nor a statement video. My thoughts only explains my personal ways of using the cameras as well as my own priorities. I only create the video in case it might help some people (in case they might share similar priorities). I hope you understand that. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting.

Hello is it good to buy a 1d mark iii i just want to do casual photography, doing portrait for my friends or family like that
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
I think for the price and if you’re not doing any sports at all, something like the 5d mark II might be a better option in my opinion. Because the 5d mark II will be better in low light situation, has bigger sensor (so better to capture lowlight as well as easier to get blurry background when photographing portraits). Furthermore, the 5d mark II is also light, more portable and will shoot video if you need it to.

@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think that if you shoot raw and willing to put a bit of time into editing some of the images then this camera is still good for wildlife for photography. However, for the same price, you could get a Canon eos 7d. That camera may offer 2 frames per second less (at 8 frames per second instead of 10 frames per second) and the sensor maybe a tiny bit smaller. However, the autofocusing system is more reliable, the colour is better (both straight from the camera and the RAW files) and it has more resolution to play with. Furthermore, the lowlight is also nicer on the 7d than the 1d mark iii and the 7d is compatible with more lenses than the 1d mark iii so you can explore more good quality budget lenses as well. :-) But of course, if you need the 10 frames per second, the APSH sensor size, the better built quality for a budget, then you can't really go wrong with the 1d mark iii either. :-) Regarding your other question, this camera does not have touch screen. It's a camera from 2007, back then touchscreens weren't a priority. Touchscreens only really showed up in flagship cameras in 2015 onwards I think... Hope that helps. :-)

Do you think I can use the 1D Mark 3 for food photography?
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 2 жыл бұрын
I think that you can use the 1d mark iii for food photography. Of course it's a sports camera in general but the colour science of this camera is great and will definitely make the food pops out. :-) Furthermore, I think that the live-view feature is also important when framing for food photography. So if you want to use it for food photography, I am sure you will produce some really nice images with the 1d mark iii. Furthermore, the 1d mark iii is still very reliable and the resolution is still good enough for most uses. :-) Hope that helps a little~~ I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

Looking for my 1st camera, this one or the 250d?
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
I personally think that the the 250d might be a better 1st camera in my opinion because the image quality is better, it accepts more lenses (also more budget but good lenses are also available for the 250d than the 1d mark iii), the screen on the camera is also better for judging your images. Furthermore, the live-view function is also better on the 250d and will auto focus accurately as well, this is very useful if you are doing night photography, interior photography, etc. The 250d is also a lighter camera with smaller form factor even with a lens attached to it and I think that this is an important factor if you would like to carry your camera out to photograph different places. The lighter and smaller form factor of the camera will mean that you're most likely to take it to more places thus coming back with more images. The 1d mark iii is a nice and fast camera. However, it is not practical and will need a lot of learning curve and time to get used to. It does not do as much and may not be a good investment as a first camera. However, if your priority to have a more weather sealed/tough body and a bit faster camera, then the 1d mark iii might be an option for you. If your priorities are to have more practical camera, ability to record video, portability, better image quality and fast/accurate focusing system even in low light, the 250d might be better for you in this case. That being said, these are just general points. Only you know exactly what your priorities are to make the final decision. Hope this helps somewhat. Otherwise, thank you very much for watching, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

You can use any EF lenses with this camera such as, Canon ef 17-40mm, Canon ef 24-70mm, Canon ef 50mm, Canon ef 85mm, etc. It does not accept any ef-s lenses (which is used for a smaller size sensor). :-) Hope this helps, if you have more questions, feel free to ask me at any time and I will do my best to answer. @DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 11 ай бұрын
NO, it is an APS-H size sensor, which means it has a crop factor of 1.3. This is still consider as a big sensor camera though since normal cropped sensor cameras usually have a crop factor between 1.5 - 1.6. So this puts the sensor size nicely in between the usual crop factor of the cropped sensor cameras and full frame sensors. Hope that helps. Yeah, it is APSH size sensor which is between APSC and full frame... That being said, the APSH sensor also offers a different kind of look to the images that Full frame and APSC won't give you and I think that it is kind of nice to experiment with. But if you really need full frame, there is always the 1ds series as well as the 1dx series (apart from the 5d series and 6d series). Thank you very much for watching, really appreciated it. I don't think that the ef 24-70mm f/2.8 L, ef 16-35mm f/4 L IS, ef 85mm f/1.2 L II, ef 35mm f/1.4 L and the 50mm f/1.4 lenses are that bad. I am sorry if you find them bad. However, I personally find that they are perfectly good with the Canon 1d mark iii especially for the resolution that the 1d mark iii has to offer. Furthermore, those lenses have their strengths and weakness depending on the focal length, distance of the subject, which aperture you use, etc. If you can work around the weaknesses, then those lenses will deliver even better results. But I thank you very much for watching and for your opinion. I will do my best to improve my future contents. I wish you a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting

my 200d is better than this. image wise
@DavidCuhls
@DavidCuhls 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed the 200d will deliver better image quality. It has better dynamic range, better iso performance, low light sensitivity, much higher resolution, smoother skin tones, more accurate colour reproduction (though that is also to do with the imaging processor as well) and just an overall more robust files to work with. But in the same time, you don't really buy this camera for the image quality whether today or even when it was first released. For today, I think the images is more of a different feel since the older digital sensors produces the unique look that modern sensors don't really produce anymore. Furthermore, the 1.3x crop is a unique type of look (that of course, you either love it or hate it but I kind of loving it). The 1d line of cameras were always built with reliability and speed as it's top priority, unlike with the 5d line where image quality is often much better than the 1d line of cameras... That being said, thank you very much for watching and for sharing your opinion, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

David, @09:55 what does Covid have to do with not being able to use the ‘notation’ function? That function serves to make a quick voice memo for a particular photo file. You could do this in your House/Apartment? I have this camera, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s an Icon. If you get one that focuses properly, there is NOTHING wrong with this model! Just use it and learn about it. It wont ‘break!’ Peace

@DavidCuhls 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, really appreciated it and I am sorry for mentioning it... I have indeed used it to record some samples when I was inside my apartment. That being said, it just does not feel the same when I am only using it for samples than using it in the real working situations. I know it will not break the camera and that this camera is built to work. So I was only waiting for the lockdown situation to be over (and it was only recently over in where I live) so I could try using it in the real shooting environment. After having using it for the past couple of shooting, when working outdoors I can hear that sound was not as clear as something like the original 1dx (not the I was trying to compare it in the first place but just something I noticed). At the end of the day, I know that it is only a simple feature but it just makes a big difference for me testing it in the real shooting situation rather than at home... That being said, I am really sorry again about what I said, I will do my best to improve my future contents. Thank you again for your feedback and for watching. I hope you have a nice day.

@@DavidCuhls Hello David, and Thank You for your reply, and You are Welcome. You have nothing to apologize for. My 1D3 was purchased used, of course, and I have owned it for around 7-8 years. I have been ‘shopping’ for quite awhile, for a 1D4, but I have never found one I liked. Either too many shutter actuations, or too high price, etc etc. It could be my 1D3 sound recorder is not working 100%, as I have only found it useful for dictating settings, scene location, etc, on a file. I don’t use it much. So I based my comment on my experience, and I should not have done so, so apologies to you. Thumbs up 👍 I appreciated your kind reply, and am now a Subscriber.
