Lately, I’ve noticed companies smashing ✨ onto every new feature they claim is “AI-powered”.
This annoys me, because the ✨ emoji is my favorite emoji, and I don’t want my use for it to go away.
I set out to find out why this is happening, and wound up on the other side of the planet.

Corrections after the fact (because I sometimes get a couple things wrong): 1: The 'moji' in Emoji means 'Character', not emotion. So it's e (picture) moji (character). That one got a bit lost in translation. 2: The binary '3' I accidentally listed as '7' (000111) - it should be (000011). 3: The Western Armenian letter Գ is U+0533. I accidentally animated U+0553 Will keep this updated if I find any other errors. Thanks for watching!

Also, "Mojibake" is completely Japanese and so the Japanese "bake" (transformation) is not pronounced like English "bake", neat as that coincidence is.

A major error is that the emoji set shown at the Museum of Modern Art isn't the earliest known emoji set. That was actually Docomo's 2006 emoji set, an updated form of their original black and white set from 1999. SoftBank's first emoji set predated Docomo's by 2 years, releasing in 1997 on the SkyWalker service for the DP-211SW phone. Still a good video, though.

✨ = magic and ethereal Throughout this video everyone brushed off the sparkles' meaning of "magic" as something unimportant, but I think that's actually all there is to it. AI features are smart, automatic and effortless, and feel like magic. That's clearly what these tech companies are communicating. That's the meaning of sparkles in the context of AI. "Why do we connect sparkles to magic?" would've been a more useful question to find the answer to. The fact that you and the other Western interviewees saw it as an obvious connection and didn't bother dwelling on it, proves exactly what you described: different societies might have symbols so ingrained in their culture that they won't even question them.

The ✨ doesn't itself mean sarcasm; the contrast between it and what it's attached to is what conveys sarcasm. Similar to "Whee. I'm so happy I could vomit. I'm having such a wonderful time I might just shoot myself." Contrasts. See? "I feel like ✨ G A R B A G E ✨" is saying something negative in a saccharine tone. So... A tone modifier.

As a UX designer whenever I’m implementing AI features you use the ✨ in order to create the impression of magic pretty much or that this is a magical feature because a lot of times you can’t really explain what the feature does until the user tries it so it’s to give the impression that it’s an automated process of some kind that the user could interpret as magic not in the fantastical sense, but in the sense of convenience or newness.

Yes, features that automatically (“magically”) do something cool for you are always associated with magic, magic wand symbol in Photoshop for example. But ✨ are better for AI because it combines magic with new “shiny” tech. And it’s good for UI design because it’s simple and recognisable symbol even if it’s small and doesn’t have a color
@Rayuaz
@Rayuaz Ай бұрын
I'm pretty suree it's derived from the wand emoji (🪄), which also has sparkles, but has too much details to read well as an icon, so we abstracted it to just the sparkles, which is a lot simpler, and makes for a better icon ✨.

Great video!!! Couple things I want to add as a Japanese. - Moji-bakè comprises of letter (文字-moji) and transformation (with a connotation of being drastic) (化け-bakè) - emoji (絵文字)is combination of picture (絵) and letter (文字), not emotion I also want to add that imo reason why emoji took off in Japan is because our language has kanji - type of letters that by itself has some meaning unlike English alphabet. The concept of having a meaning in one symbol was already a familiar idea for us, so that “iconisation” took place in Japan as it did.

An "algorithm" is "AI" if it's run by a computer. We've been using the term for decades. For example, think about video games, ever since we had CPU-controlled enemies in video games, we would refer to the algorithm as "enemy AI". Is the term overused? Sure, but that's marketing for you. At the end of the day though, if a non-biological thing (something artificial) does something mimicking intelligence (whether that's a basic enemy logic in a video game, or today's art/music generators and chatbots) the term is being used correctly.

You've covered a lot of good angles. One that I'm aware of that I didn't see you touch on is programming related (and therefore perhaps relevant to AI): several years back (at least as early as 2019, probably earlier) what is now referred to as Gitmoji started being used. It's not super prevalent, but definitely recognised in the industry and basically what it is is using emoji as part of your commit message (the message describing what you've done) to indicate the type of change you made. Examples include 🐞 for fixing a bug and... ✨ for adding a new feature.

You pronounced "mojibake" wrong. It's pronounced more like "moji-bah-keh" (remember this is Japanese, the English sound for "bake" makes no sense) And P.S. this just means "garbled characters", it's nothing to do with emoji. It stems from Japan having multiple incompatible encodings, so any and all text in one encoding would appear garbled on a system which used a different one.

This was fascinating. I’ve always wondered why everyone uses sparkles for AI but this was more interesting to just learn the origins of the emoji as a whole. Plus it was shot and edited beautifully!

I’d say the skull emoji is like a replacement for “bruh”. You say “bruh” to express that you think something is stupid or ridiculous, in such an extreme fashion that it catches you off guard and makes you a little confused for a second.

I’ve always seen the sparkles emoji as the sound effect associated with it, often being the little high pitched semi-chromatic scale chimes, as that’s almost always accompanied the visual every single time I’ve seen it.

i think one of the big reasons its used for ai is because its one color, and a very basic, simple emoji which is great for simple, corporate logos especially when the subject is ai and futuristic

Fun Fact: The font known as "Dingbat" is the predecessor of the modern emoji, dingbat fonts were used in the 90's to add designs to boring documents. For example: a in the dingbat font known as "Wingdings" is the "♋" emoji. In fact, I literally copied the emoji from the wingdings font.︎

Your videos are genuinely awesome I really look forward to them. Like I'll put away everything and make sure I have my headphones on. You made a 29-minute video about an emoji incredibly engaging with fantastic editing and camera work like it's clear you put a shit ton of effort into your videos like with the background emojis, interviews, and animations. Props to you and please keep making videos.

This is a great video! I had a few thoughts as I was watching it that might interest you? (if not, well, helps your algo at least!) 1) many years before doing ✨this✨ took off, before emoji were even around in the US (mid-late 00s, very early 10s), I and many others did something very similar. when i wanted to be sarcastic, perhaps about something that was supposed to be good/cool, i would do *~this~* or ~*this*~, which to me at least, was trying to communicate a similar visual of sparkles/visual flourish. 2) As someone who grew up on anime and understood the popping vein symbol to mean "angry" years before i understood that it was representative of a popping vein, the "diamond with a dot" emoji you showed several times puzzled me, as it didn't resemble anything at all to my eye! So i looked back to its history, and to me at least, the original version of it on the first set of Docomo emoji seems to be a flower with four petals. This makes a lot more sense with the meaning relating to "kawaii", as flowery imagery is very common in shoujo manga or the general idea of cuteness, rather than that odd diamond. That's honestly a story I'm curious about, as google's first iteration of the emoji was very plainly a flower, but on the other hand, in 2013 docomo's last iteration added a 5 petal flower as a separate symbol... I can see how it emerged from the original pixel art, but I have to wonder what the exact progression in meaning was, as well as the original intent.
