Interesting research! I'm a bit sad if sparkles will definitely be bound to AI cause i've been using sparkles as a reaction for the last few years to give a positive feeling without using ugly faces or cold thumbs up.. (lol i feel a little bit japanese today) One association you didn't include in your video is the magic wand, as for the automatic selection tool used in graphic programs, whose icon is a stick with a few sparks on the tip. I remember it being an early authomatic tool that changed a lot for users and looked a bit like a shortcut or miracle and "magic wand" was a perfect name. Somehow it feels connected to what the AI wants to be presented as: magic, shortcut, automation.

As a Japanese, I have no idea about the 💠emoji. After some research, I found the original docomo/au/SoftBank emoji set list, the original style of 💠 is on No.148. www.docomo.ne.jp/binary/pdf/service/imode_mail/function/emoji_convert/pictogram.pdf It says "かわいい"(cute) for it and I suppose its literal shape is a flower. Who changed it to an artificial diamond!? 🤣

Hypothesis: they're lazy and/or uncreative. It's not that hard to come up with a new design, much less so when you have the resources they do.

As the relationship with our phones is already so personal and intrusive I think many people like their device to be as cold and functional as possible, although Google’s work is amazing from a design perspective
@Big-Chungus21Күн бұрын
Its a good thing that smartphones used to have a focus on being smaller and thinner. Nowadays they’re way too big to the point of being unconventional as a *phone*, for me its impossible to use a modern phone in one hand without risking dropping it. I couldn’t care how much better smartphone cameras could be if it comes at the expense of everything else. If cameras ever get better on phones, I would rather it be used to have decent cameras on smaller phones, than better cameras on the same size or even bigger phones.

Quasar (Electronics) as an accent in the logo, Subaru logo as Pleiades star cluster M45 star group. It's a visual artifact of a square optical lens aperture looking at a circular point of light.

You've covered a lot of good angles. One that I'm aware of that I didn't see you touch on is programming related (and therefore perhaps relevant to AI): several years back (at least as early as 2019, probably earlier) what is now referred to as Gitmoji started being used. It's not super prevalent, but definitely recognised in the industry and basically what it is is using emoji as part of your commit message (the message describing what you've done) to indicate the type of change you made. Examples include 🐞 for fixing a bug and... ✨ for adding a new feature.

i'm curious why you'd interview the person who made the emoji rather than the people who use the emoji the way you're wondering about...

the twinkle emoji will always be used for ironic effect. i don’t keep up with these random companies but snapchat uses the ⚙️ icon for AI which is fitting
@Idontreallyknowwhatimdoinglol2 күн бұрын
I always thought it was because AI is very new and "the way of the future" and often new things are associated with being shiny and clean and sort of wow look at me. Like all the time, the future is represented as being very clean very white and shiny metal. also I could just be magic. Like turning words into pictures is a very magical concept. A machine that can talk and think is inherently magical.
@pchris2 күн бұрын
I see ✨often used to just mean "new" like to highlight a new feature. AI features are still very new so it makes sense that they would often get put along side them and then some companies just started using that as an icon to mean AI in general.
