Don't do what we did. We left for our 1st passage thinking it was going to be easy sailing. But, everything that could have gone wrong did. If we didn't have a super experienced friend aboard I don't know what would have happened. Sailing is amazing, but it gets scary fast. Thanks to Jamie and @ParlayRevival for buddy boating with us.

Rule #3 never leave the dock without a Victor Knox knife. It's made for cutting rope in seconds. I've fished offshore for 21 years and we never leave without atleast 3 knives on board.

Am sorry, this may be fun to quite a few people, perhaps also to yourself, but this was a great video of HOW NOT TO SAIL. A boat that is basically not seaworthy, a crew that knows absolutely nothing, equipment that is failing, this is a disgrace. I worked as a pilot for the coast guard in the Caribbean for many years and flew countless SAR missions. Accidents can happen at any time and you (plus your boat) need to be prepared for that. You were obviously not prepared. Do yourself and all others on the water a favor: get this boat in seaworthy condition, repair all the equipment, make sure it functions, get sailing lessons, get lessons in navigation, rules of the sea etc etc. Your life and that of your family depends on it.
@Halespeed
@Halespeed 19 күн бұрын
I hope this was the low point in your sailing career. You and Mary have a good attitude, but you had your family out there. That boats condition was sketchy when it left the dock.

I've chosen to believe that this video was mostly filled with made-up drama for the camera and wasn't actually documenting all the dangers he put himself, Jamie, the crew of the Parlay, and his family in. I'm better off with 6 AGM batteries I have to constantly move around the cockpit instead of having an AIS! WHY BOTHER TO WRITE DOWN THE CHANNEL FOR THE RADIO OF YOUR ONLY LIFELINE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN?! I CAN PROBABLY JUST RUN INTO THEM OUT AT SEA!!!! WHY SHOULDN'T YOU WAIT FOR THE ONLY SAILOR WITH ANY EXPERIENCE TO GO BELOW AND DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE JUST SAID?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Glad everyone made it home safely. I raced a 150 mile long race thru some pretty bad storms in the Gulf of Mexico. We finished the race and tied up the boat in a slip around midnight. A little while later I saw a friend's boat come in, so I walked over to see how they'd done. He said they survived just fine but one of their crew got severely seasick and had puked 28 times. About that time, we heard a noise nearby and we turned around to see that crew member puking off the pier. My friend turned to me and said, "29 times".

Rough start, but all part of the process! I'm sure Colin was frustrated, but you guys are just starting out and he has the benefit of many years experience - all in time! FYI I've seen a lot of folks keep diving knives secured in mounted locations throughout the boat for just such emergencies; make sure it's in a spot you can access in rough seas, and in a sheath for protection. (Good opportunity to teach the kids some safety measures, as well.) All in all, really great video editing, and glad to see you back at it; important part is asking for feedback and not giving up, so you're well on the way! Fair winds. ✌

Wow, that was painful to watch. Fortunately no one was hurt, thank God Jamie was there. I recall Parlay's post about this 2 years ago, but I don't think they covered all the mechanical issues. Hopefully you've spent the intervening 2 years making sure the boat was indeed ready to sail, and have had a chance to sail in less challenging conditions with some proper instruction. You've got good sense about mechanical things, and great enthusiasm, but any one of the number of rookie mistakes you made could have been tragic.

If possible I recommend two seasons of coastal cruising to get to know the boat and its systems be it new or second hand. This will stand you in good stead when you take the boat offshore where things can and do go wrong on a steady basis. Mostly its small stuff but you need to know enough to problem solve and be self reliant in fixing it.

@@david_shih Hey David. Hoping someday you will make your place in the sailing world. You will then have someone else do your videos and won't personally respond, 😔. But hey remember me as I wrote this. Your kids will be so more adjusted to the world while traveling, problem solving on a boat while learning how to team especially in crisis modes. Amazing how kids today do not know how to use basic tools. Blessings! 🙏🏻

The Shih’s! I thought you guys had given up. I hope the family is well. Look forward to many more adventures. Man that trip was quite a shakedown cruise and learning experience. If you haven’t already get a portable 3kw portable inverting generator. Run that to charge batteries instead of the engines. Only cost $500 to replace vs a whole engine swap. I hope you guys are out cruising! Look forward to many more adventures

Well, gotta say. It takes Dave a while to put out a video. Which I think is fine. Not a fan of youtube channels that feel so pressured to put out weekly or whatever that's it's more like bubble gum. But when Dave puts out? He puts out a doozy... Plus, I like how your repaired that engine part. I mentioned a method to fix it using my other handle, and it looks like you did it that way! Quick tip, in a pinch if you don't have an auto pilot (I never used one personally), and you need to maintain course with the rudder, bungee cords to the tiller or wheel to help hold position and absorb wave rock can help you maintain bearing without wearing you out during the wee hours of the morning.
@david_shih
@david_shih 20 күн бұрын
will have to try the bungie trick....make sense since it has a bit of give so the rudder can move a bit with the rocking. also, thanks for the kind words! i hate the pressure of weekly videos. it kind of forces lower quality content, that being said i need to figure out how to get 1 out a week if we're going to make a living doing this. thanks for watching!

@@david_shih Here's an idea for you. Speaking as a small sailboat sailor who also happens to be ethnically Vietnamese, for both you and Mary. Vietnamese/Asian Cuisine you can actually cook on a boat galley with what you can fit and have on a boat. As in with an alcohol/propane stove. With minimal tools that usually have to serve more than one purpose, which is how most small boat sailors go. I got a Taiwanese cook book just to try and figure it out, cause their cuisine is pretty minimal tool wise, but hell, if you can pull that off on your boat, I mean... I'll watch that. LOL
