I have loved this series since it first hit the shelves in the stores. I discovered the first book "Clan of the Cave Bear", when it first came out in the early '80s. I read it over and over waiting for the second book to come out, and I would read the second book over and then I'd start with the first and second reading them until the next in the series came out. It was great and awful all at the same time. It took a few years to get them all read because I had to wait so long between the times each book was published. I am so excited to have this one online, this is awesome! THANK YOU for reading it and uploading it to KZfaq! Does anyone know if the other 5 books, of the series, are on audio?

The writer assumes the neatherthals lived in a patriarchy. Why?

lol that's one way of looking at it! Gender is definitely a big theme in this novel, and one of the things I find interesting about it is it's feminist in a very particular way, owing both to the subject matter and the time the book was written. A very interesting, somewhat unique take on the old old idea that women are naturally hardwired to do one thing and men are naturally hardwired to do another. Auel has made the people of the Clan a society where that is literally a hundred percent true, and it's one of the major things that makes them unable to adapt to a rapidly changing (in geological terms) world.

@@DavidReadsASoIaF It would take a feminist way of thinking to believe that women are superior at math and reasoning. Sorry but that's never been the case. It might be in Fantasy Land where the Matriarchy rules.

If you can overlook the Feminist agenda in the book, it's a really solid story. I found myself rolling my eyes several times but it's not so egregious that you can't enjoy it.

In a book about trying to overcome the difficulty of existing freely in a society run by abusive religious pedophiles, it's the women's equality that really makes it difficult for you? Take a minute and really think about what that says about your values.
