An older video featured you and Rachel planting peppers from grocery store peppers, so I saved a bunch of seeds from huge red, orange and yellow bell peppers that I purchased. They grew beautiful green bell peppers that ripened into those same colors. I save lettuce seed, radishes, tomatoes, butternut and banana squash. I’ve also had great success leaving my best beet, carrot, and onion to winter over and produce seed the second year. End up with some strange squash but it always tastes just fine.

It is prudent to choose friends who have a large forehead and own a good sized skateboard or perambulator, or something easily converted into a camera dolly. I find that having a make shift forehead caliper, made out of a square of cardboard, is a wise thing to carry when looking for new friends. In order to no alarm prospective friends, it can also be a great idea to decorate the forehead measuring device to make it look less threatening. These are just some of the things I have learned a long the way.

5:02 I figured that out the hard way last year. The number of Fortex (which is supposed to be one of the most prolific green beans available) I harvested was actually smaller than the number of seeds I planted! My best guess is the raccoons got what I couldn't find. Now I only grow "colorful" pole beans like Blauhilde, Rattlesnake, and Goldmarie.

I admire your safety equipment for the Pepper's. I had the experience with some "Local Habenero's" that poor me thought I could wash off with soap and water??? 6 hour's later at bed time, I yawned and tear's came from my eye's. I naturally wiped my eye's with my hand's, and I paid the price! I washed my eye's out with Milk to neutralize the burning! Recently at a Farmer's Market, I saw some strange looking Pepper Tree's! I looked them up later and learned that I had bought 2 "Carolina Reaper's!" The Man later told me that I can handle them as long as I don't break the skin of the Pepper!

I had some of those little Asiatic peppers 🌶 like David had growing in a big bush on my yard in Africa. The kids would come from the village to use our well and would pop them in their mouths before leaving. I had so many of these I decided to try making tobacco sauce with them since such a thing was not available in their stores. After pounding them in a wood mortar I managed to get some on my hands, and as I worked I sweat and wiped my brow. I had aching, flaming hot hands and face for 3 to 4 days! Made good sauce though! Wish I had some now!

Great video. Don't get cocky, folks; I've had spicy hands since noon. Spicy left eye region, too. I've got a Little Fingers eggplant that is crammed into a Greenstalk with 2 other types of eggplant plus 3 peppers on the same tier, and it has produced an almost obscene amount of fruit. I'm going to save seed from it and then spend the off season looking for eggplant recipes so I'm ready for it next year. Nobody can eat that much eggplant parm all summer. If I was set up for it, I'd bring it indoors for the winter and see how far it'd go under the light. I bet I'd have a nice eggplant shade tree before too long. This plant is nuts. Thanks for the book recommendation, David. I've been curious about plant breeding lately, and, with the proper setup, it seems like something I could get into.

So using a bit of tech and physics to save/dehydrate seed. Look into the mason attachment for the food saver vacuum packers. You can also use a brake bleeder if you don't have a foodsaver. In a vacuum the temperature that water evaporates drops significantly, hence the issue of cooking rice/pasta when in Colorado Rockies, hint use a pressure cooker the vent weight is much higher than the atmosphere difference so you don't have to adjust pressure cooker recipes. After you have them jarred and vacuumed put them in an opaque ideally black box in the sun. They'll heat up the water will begin evaporating and your seeds will begin drying, maybe change jars so that you can reduce humidity in the jar but just vacuum sealing seeds in jars will significantly help their viability

👍 green bean varieties usually do not cross pollinate so I you can plant multiple varieties next to each other and save the seed and the green beans that grow from that seed should be true to type. David has his own pale green Chinese noodle bean variety that is easy to find and might be for sale.

Some of the information well maybe alot I didn't remember from child hood. I grew up in a situation In a extended family of grandparents a mom and myself in a housewhole where if you didn't grow and can food you went hungry during winter months. We always had a big garden around an acre at least. That tip of flag plants was one my grand parents used. The would feather green beans through the green bean season. They would pay attention of every palant. If say one vine produced more beans than others they would tag that plant and let the green beans mature into seeds for next year crop. They was always looking to improve their harvest in some way.

Thank you for this video - I always thought that you needed to let the fruit ( cukes / tomato / peppers etc ) essentially dry completely on the vines or plants ( so they're at full maturity and pumped full of the goodness from the mother plant just like you did for your beans ) BEFORE you harvest the dried fruit and then remove the seeds ! I never knew that seeds from just matured fruit would be OK too. Also, can you store seeds away in little plastic pill bags ? And under what conditions do you keep your seeds over the winter ? Thank you

I know you were joking around in the beginning, but I've really been digging your cinematography lately! It looks like you're using manual focus? What camera/lenses have you been using? I really like using old vintage manual lenses. It makes things more fun!
@davidthegood

Yes - we are using manual focus. Though this video was shot on a Voigtlander 28mm lens that Skillcult recommended to me. A newer lens, but we still ran it manual. Some of the previous videos were on a Helios 44-2 58mm lens. My camera is a Canon 80D, but we have been deliberately working on pushing the look towards cinematographic.

@@davidthegood Nice! Some lenses just add so much character. They almost get into some vintage VHS vibes and I love it! Keep up the great work!

David, thanks for being awsome! Q. Is there a reason why you can't keep the whole dry pod for the following year?

Little bug eggs hatch and burrow into the pod to eat the beans. That's true for a bunch of different seeds so I try to clean mine as best as I can

I think I've seen people strip the corn cobs of kernels by rubbing two cobs together, but I'm not sure, maybe you would want to test that though?

In the intro, what is the plant that is on the right hand side of the frame? (David stage left 😂) Just curious!

Have you transplanted plants your trying to save for seed? I want to save more seeds this year but with limited space in my rows i wondered if i could transplant some things and then let them take their time to go to seed. I imagine okra is a no on that one, but what about maybe kale, lettuce, collards, etc?

I have a squash plant showing awesome vigorous growth. If I inbred that plant to itself with its own male flowers will it lose that vigor? It's a costada romanesco.

All your videos have the coolest outro grooves. What is the name and title of this one? Do you have a mix tape of just groovy outra songs? I would love to pop it in my CD/cassette deck in my truck on an arduous commute.
