Remember when literally every character in this series was intelligent in one manner or another and it felt like it was a big chess game with each player moving his pieces around (especially Jack)? The last two films clearly don’t.
@becca29383 жыл бұрын
You see, it's because the last two don't have the right recipe. In the first few movies, we have the perfect cake created by the characters, the plot, the conversations, the setup, the filming, the makeup, everything was perfect. It was all meant to be for its time. Fast forward to Stranger Tides, it wasn't too horrible, but they tried to force all of these expectations from the old movies with the wrong ingredients. It got even worse with Dead Men Tell No Tales because by then, the cake was burnt, and the Pirates of the Carribean franchise didn't need anything else.

Something I ALWAYS admired about the writing and the acting from this cast: Each character, as their story progressed seemed to learn something about why Jack was the way he was. Why he was so twitchy and how he seemed to always ebb and flow like the tide. As they became more aware of the life of the sea, of the magic and the mystery, they too started to just let those tides take them. As each movie released, these characters began to exhibit the very same traits and demeaner as Jack. They acted more confident even while they had no plan. They too began to become twitchy, knowing that at any moment the sea could swallow them whole as if it had a mind of its own. They knew there were things in this world that could only be explained by things they as mortal beings could never really understand. Curious, they became. Inspecting their surroundings, poking the beasts in front of them to see what would make them bite, and flashing their hand to see what they could get away with. This series writing had some very rough spots but the characters all evolved in a very gratifying way. They'd earned their sea legs and by the gods they were using them.
@darklord884 Жыл бұрын
And yet they all stayed unique in their own way, never melding into one mass of unrecognisable blank standins. Will became a hardened pirate from a naive idealist, learning how big the world was and just how to operate it when given the right cards. Elizabeth grew up on pirate stories and had to slowly accept just how different actual pirates were compared to the tall tales she held so dear. Both the highs and the lows, she had to learn to accept the way the world worked and live with the true way of pirates. Beckett started to meddle with forces he couldn't understand but he treated them all with cold indifference, only concerned with power and money. In the end that sealed his fate, his refusal to let the tides guide him, he wished to control them. Jones was the old sea devil who thought himself invincible and in control. In a way, he was the ideal pirate. Able to sail the seas unbound, forever, chained by naught but the beat of his own heart. But no man can be truly invincible and no man can avoid disappointment. Neither did Jones. "Realising his wish was naught but ash."

This scene is great for several reasons: We start to feel a bit of sympathy for Davy Jones as he reveals what had happened between him and Calypso. He used to be a man who cared too much for a woman that betrayed him, a simple heartbroken man that decided he'd rather cut his own heart out and become a monster than go through something like that again. Will, on the other hand, seems to have grown quite a bit. He comes off as a bit of a prick, but that's mostly him playing with his opponent and trying to get under his skin. He's being cunning like Jack, but in his own way. After what he'd gone through, he's not the same naive and innocent boy, by this point you could almost say that Will has indeed become a pirate.

Jack Sparrow's plan was working, he didn't want to free calypso so having Will send that message and get the flying dutchmen closer so he can then stab the heart. He needed to get on the ship and that's why he was traded, it was like a chess game with Jack being the king and Davy Jones being the other.

Will Turner sure has guts to say "You WILL free my father" to a face like Davy Jones's

One thing I think resonates weirdly within the plot is Beckett, and his wish to know more about Calypso. In the end, he did not have much of an interaction with her, despite his curiousness about the pieces of eight, and Jones' relationship with her. Makes me wonder what Beckett was really thinking about in this scene, when Will and Jones are having an intrigue-filled discussion which barely matters to Beckett in the end. He must've felt quite left out xD
@TheWPhilosopher4 жыл бұрын
I imagine he didn't want her released either but would swap Jones, who was becoming tiresome, for her to control the sea. After all. If she's a heathen god even bound she's more powerful.
@fighterck62414 жыл бұрын
Yeah like the above said, he probably though what he could control her. But I don't think that it was in exchange for Jones but rather as an insurance policy of Jones became unreliable or vice-versa. Powerful men want everything.
@TheWPhilosopher4 жыл бұрын
@@fighterck6241 I didn't mean swap as in exchange but swap as in gain Calypso dispose of Jones as no longer useful. Jones was becoming a nuisance and Mercer had already hinted about killing him. I suspect Norrington was being "groomed" to stab the heart.
@becca29383 жыл бұрын
Well, the way we've seen Beckett play this game so far is that he's really good at making people give him what he needs without them noticing it. The interaction between Jones and Turner, probably tells him a lot more than you think, and their discussion leads to some indirectly revealed info about Calypso and Davy.
