In my opinion, this battle was and still is, one of the greatest moments in cinema history. Davy Jones, Hector Barbossa and Jack Sparrow, three of the most notorious and infamous captains, aboard the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl, the two most feared and powerful ships in the seven seas, battling together whilst also navigating an enormous maelstrom... Everything about this scene, from the build-up, to the characters' lines, to the music and the visuals. It's all stunning. I wish I could go back and watch this for the first time again. ❤

As a retired watercraft Engineer in the Army who's sailed the 7 seas on a small army boat. that feeling of screaming into the storm while seeing purple lightning off the coast of Panama and seeing waves as big as mountains during a hurricane....I know that feeling well. See. Calypso made the fight fair for both of them. Barbossa was brought back to life on the promise he help release her. And she clearly likes Jack. Most likely because Jack is just himself, and doesn't care for the release of Calypso or not really. And obviously, the man she loves. So, instead of being a bitch, she made it a fair fight, where only one would be the survivor.

I really like the juxtaposition of each ship's crew dynamic. The Black Pearl's crew are all in sync, working in tandem like a well oiled machine, they're good to go despite knowing they're not immortal. Elizabeth comes to Barbossa and trusts him completely, telling him how he's needed. Barbossa, knowing the crew won't survive without him gets on the helm to do his part. If he dies, so be it. Meanwhile, on the Dutchman, Jones has to force his way on to the helm of his own ship and take control. It's not comforting when he does, he's questioned immediately by a man he can't stand. No trust, no respect. Of course they end up losing.

I believe (might be stated in the movie somewhere) that the maelstrom provided an even playing field. it slowed down the pearl or sped up the dutchman, negating the pearl's speed advantage, whilst making it harder to do broadsides and prevented use of the dutchman's bow cannons, thus negating the dutchman's firepower advantage.

14 years later, I have a much more profound appreciation for this film, and while I enjoyed the last two movies, I would have been just fine with this series ending as a trilogy.

0:03 I never noticed before, but Jones puts his hand over the area where his heart would be when he sees the storm forming and then whispers "Calypso..." longingly. He knows she's been released. He also says _"She'll_ not harm us!" He knows Calypso is on his side for this fight.

I would've liked to have seen that. I don't think he would've made a difference though. Davy Jones was able to beat Jack, Will, Elizabeth and Bill with ease.
@N7spongy4 жыл бұрын
@@Darkstar263 it's a shame because it's always that damn claw of his that turns the fight. Jack cut the key off him and disarmed Jones, and the only reason why Jack didnt further mess him up is because Jones broke Jack's sword with his claw. And then Jack starts beating Jones with a log and only loses because Jones grabs it with his claw. I think the fights were meant to show that Jones isnt the most skilled sword fighter but his monstrous body makes up for it

Yes
@kyuhyunshim42033 жыл бұрын
I think those scenes were meant to show jack is superior swordman but can't win against a monster(davy jones). And by jones using his claw, audience realizes jones is not just an octopus head who takes orders from beckett, but a monster who is unbeatable withoust stabbing the heart. So overall, jack is better swordsman but jones is a better fighter

"Full-bore and into the abyss!" One of my all-time favorite lines in a movie. Bill Nighy is such an amazing actor, his delivery is always perfect.

Anyone notice that for a minute Jones softened up? That bit of hope on his face when he says "Calypso" then he falls back into the built up rage and anger he has at the world....Bill Nighy is a goddamn legendary actor
