Great video Xav, and the calendar is an excellent idea. 👍 I'm a big fan of Dawn Redwoods. I like to leave mine completely untouched throughout the growing season and then prune them in the winter. I too put mine in a tray of water on the warmest days - those Redwoods can really drink! 💦

I had succes with a metasequoia airlayer. In 2022 the airlayer callused over, so last year I re-opened the ring and scraped it deeper. And in 6-8 weeks it had rooted. Removed the airlayer early august and it started growing good. Hope it survives winter(it should) like my other metasequoia’s.

Wow, I can actually add something useful here...strange. YES, I've air layered these. Success came with a brach approaching 1" in diameter. Previous attempts of pencil thick branches failed, though I'm not sure if it was the medium I was using or not. Plenty of roots, all in one season, when it did work. As far as cuttings, you seem to have no issues, but maybe it's worth noting that one of the heads of horticulture from the Arnold Arboretum (our kids were in daycare together for a while) told me that they take pencil thick cuttings in the winter. Had a pretty good success rate doing that, and will plan on doing it again when the specimen in my yard grows up tall enough to take cuttings from (one of my cuttings, actually). Cheers, thanks for all the great info as usual. -Colin

Can you prune the branches when they are ruby red even if there is no bud present where your trimming too. I'm fairly sure when you prune you have to identify buds to trim too or the ramification won't occur
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 2 ай бұрын
If you look back at the detailed pruning video you will see how I demonstrate exactly that. These are meant as little 5 minute short guides for getting your timings right. This pruning isnt really related to new buds it relates to the existing ramification that has taken place through the year. You cut back to existing fronds to encourage the tree to produce new buds from those juntions. The early spring pruning is definitely related to the buds because that is all you can see on the tree. Cheers

Perhapsplant them in pots and then put them in sealable plastic bags for humidity? let me know what you do in the end - I will be very interested :)
