I'm glad to you watched this! This set the standard for SO many "parody" movies, like "Scary Movie." I hope you love it! The first thing to be aware of is that with only 2 exceptions, all of the actors were "serious" actors, most having never been in comedies before! Sometimes the humor won't quite come across, for instance, you might not know that the man waiting in the cab was Howard Jarvis, who was behind the property tax "rebellion" in California, so it was funny that the cab fare kept going up while he just waited there. And then there was the lady "interpreter." She played a part in the family comedy from the 60s and 70, "Leave it to Beaver," where she played the mother. If you grew up with the TV show, it was hilarious, but I'm guessing for someone who was not familiar with the TV show, maybe not so great... And of course, "Roger," the black co-pilot, was played by basketball all-star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

There are several more in-jokes like that. For example, the PA announcers who get into an argument about what the red and white zones are for are the same people who voiced the real-life announcements for the LA airport (A married couple in real life). The female passenger wondering to herself why her husband never takes a second cup of coffee at home is a parody of a prominent coffee commercial of that era, aimed at stoking insecurity in housewives: "If your man doesn't guzzle liters of coffee, then you're a _bad wife_ because you're using the _wrong coffee!"_ It's the same actress from the commercial, parodying her own role.

I'd put "Scary Movie" in a different category, just because it parodies specific films, and often just the most well-known scenes in those films, while "Airplane!" parodies a genre, and also stands as a comedy even without that. Nothing against "Scary Movie; I liked it! It's just a different, though very similar, type of movie. I'm not sure there's really anything else out there like ZAZ, to be honest. Maybe Mel Brooks, but that's also its own thing.

Also, back when the movie was made Magic Johnson hadn’t been drafted yet and the Lakers weren’t the powerhouse they’d soon become. Kareem was getting a lot of negative press for dogging it by not always seeming to play his hardest every game. So when the kid keeps saying to him that it’s really Kareem and not “Roger” and then says that his dad says that Kareem is lazy or something like that, it so funny to see Kareem react the way he does which is completely out of character for him.

The couple arguing over the PA system at the beginning were actually married and the actual people who did the announcement recordings for LAX; their voices were quite recognizable to anyone flying through LAX back in the 70s. The guy in the Taxi was also really well known. He had gone on a crusade to remove the tax base for CA schools (unfortunately successfully) and was known as a massive penny-pincher. It's really weird you didn't get subtitles for the Jive scenes... I've never seen that before. You shouldn't need to turn subtitles on to get them as they're required in order to get the jokes, but maybe this edition didn't get the memo? KZfaq should have those clips if you're interested. Also, the passenger who translates for the stewardess was the actress who played the mom in Leave it to Beaver - this was a well known, 1950s, all-American-Family (ie white & anodyne) show. It was quite a shock for audiences when she started speaking Jive.

You'll see this film countless times and still catch new jokes. I don't know which copy of DVD you got, but the chat between the two jive guys is subtitled in a jokey way. Also, the co-pilot was really Kareem Abdhul Jabar, who is an all-time basketball legend. The doctor is Leslie Nielsen, who stars in the Naked Gun films as well as the much better TV series, "Police Squad" that Naked Gun is based on. I think I only watch about 4 reaction channels because most don't capture the reason for people watching them. Yours is right up there because you show genuine reactions rather than forced ones. There are a lot of jokes that younger generations (or non-Americans) may miss, not because they didn't age well but because some people aren't familiar with the celebrities of the time. The co-pilot was Kareem Abdul-Jabar, center for the LA Lakers and the player with the most points scored in NBA history. Jive is American slang but the culmination of that whole joke is the older lady who 'translates' was Barbara Billingsley, who played the mom in the show Leave it to Beaver in the late 1950's. The person cleaning the windows and checking the oil while the pilots are talking before takeoff, was Jimmy Walker, who was in some of the biggest shows of the 70s. And many of these actors are spoofing other roles they had in dramatic airplane related shows or movies. It seems like you really enjoyed this, so do yourself a favor and watch Police Squad. Same directors, starring Leslie Nielsen. Full shows (only 6 episodes) are available on KZfaq.

The premise behind everything Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker wrote together was a joke every 20 seconds, whether it was funny or not. It worked with the movies they did but when it came to their Police Squad series in 1982 it failed because people don't actually *watch* TV. The listen, they look at it but they don't tend to pay attention to what they're seeing and so much of their work is based on sight gags. That also means you can watch one of their movies 5 times and still see something new every time.

The guy in the Taxi was Howard Jarvis. Howard was one of those "Consumer Rights Reporters". In real life he never would have allowed a cab driver to shaft him like that. That's the humor of his situation. The man and woman doing the airport "The White Zone is for immediate unloading only" are the actual voice talents that made that recording at Los Angeles airport. For decades you heard those two making that announcement. And, off subject, if you ever heard in a Bugs Bunny cartoon "With stops in Needles, Barstow annnnnd Rancho Cuckamanga" is an actual recording from the downtown Los Angeles bus station.
