National Lampoon was a popular humor magazine in the US, known for its savage and adult flavor humor compared to the more juvenile MAD magazine, peaking probably in the late 1970's and early 80's. They branded several great comedies early on, the first being the National Lampoon's Animal House. Killing the dog is on brand for the magazine. One of their most famous covers featured a photo of a worried looking dog with a gun held to its head, and a promise to spare the dog if you buy the magazine. The magazine eventually collapsed and the name was bought by someone who licensed the brand out to a lot of awful, terrible, worthless comedies, so the brand name by itself is no longer a guarantee. The Chevy Chase vacation movies are great, particularly this one and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Wally World is 100% taking the piss out of Disney. The owner even looks like Uncle Walt. Oh, and one more note. As Wally World isn't real, they filmed the rides at a couple of Six Flags parks in California. They're a popular chain of theme parks, a bit more accessible than the Disney parks.

I could be wrong, but I believe the scenes shot at Six Flags were shot at the original Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington, TX. I am not even sure if thry had started opening other parks yet at that point. Then Time Warner bought the chain and ruined the franchise. The little man at the car dealership was Eugene Levy (American Pie,Shitts Creek etc.) who along with John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, the director of this film Harold Ramis and others, got their start on Canada's SCTV sketch show. Before the National Lampoon movies were a series of comedy albums starring many people later on SNL - John Belushi, Bill Murray, his brother Brian Doyle Murray (the mayor in Groundhog Day), Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Harold Ramis, and more. Don't let not celebrating Thanksgiving stop you from watching Trains, Planes, and Automobiles. It's all about the relationship between John Candy and Steve Martin.

When I saw this in the theater with my sisters, it got to that scene and my oldest sister blurted out, "Gross, he's just putting the dirty dishes back in the cupboard!" and half the women in the audience gasped and many men just started cracking up. It was a great mix of reactions for that. Then later, when Aunt Edna, after finding out the dog peed on their sandwiches, just shrugged and kept on eating hers....nearly everyone let out a " oooohhhh!". I just love those parts, displaying the less filtered humor of the 80s.

Hi Dawn! You asked if the Wally World location was a real park and it is. Those scenes were filmed at Magic Mountain which is located just northwest of Los Angeles. At one time that was the largest wooden rollercoaster ever built. I love your content. Huge fan! (Ham, pastrami, and mayo with any soft bread.)

If you want to learn more about what "National Lampoon" refers to, you should look up Douglas Kenney (Wikipedia would be good). You will find that he wrote the movies Animal House and Caddyshack, and that he started the magazine National Lampoon -- an offshoot from The Harvard Lampoon, of which he was the editor as an undergraduate there.

Hi Dawn Marie!🙂I like this film, but "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) is my favorite in the series. The trip was 2408 miles long. Yeah, Walley World is a fake Disney want to be amusement park. Although, there is actually one in Canada. They used Six Flags in Valencia California for filming. Mr. Walley happens to resemble Roy Disney. The sports car/skinny dipping girl is well known model Christie Brinkley. Great reactions to your first Vacation film, Dawn Marie!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The car running after turned off... was a real thing. My dad bought my mom an early 80s Dodge station wagon and it would run for 10 to 20 seconds after shut off and it sounded exactly like the one in the movie. She hated that car and complained about it for decades.😅

My car from the late 90s will sometimes make noise for 10 seconds after turning off the engine, too. It's not a puttering like in the movie, though, but a sound like a vacuum cleaner. I think that it's the radiator cooling off the engine and happens only on the hottest of days. The first few times that it happened, I had the same reaction as Mrs. Griswold: "Why is the car still running?"😂

Funny you ask about sandwiches, because I'm watching the video while at a chain restaurant called Jason's Deli, eating their ham-and-salami mufaleta sammich. It comes with melted provolone cheese and... I forget what they call the spread, but it's made of finely diced black olives and a bit of carrot. It's served on a crusty sesame seed roll. I'm a sandwich guy myself, and this one's making an impressive run at becoming my favorite.

Originally the ending was way different. They still arrived at the park being closed, buying the gun, but then they went to Wally's home. There was a party going on there, and Clark takes hostages. The cops also get involved, but then Ferrari girl arrives and turns out to be Wally's daughter. She then asked dad Wally to drop the charges. This was all filmed but scrapped and the park reshoot was done with Candy. Ferrari girl then sort of went to be a loss to the story.

Got all the way through to the end because I wasn’t tied to the bumper. Plain white bread is what I grew up with, but I have settled on King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls. Peanut butter and jelly is what I take to work (have a bunch in the freezer) and otherwise turkey with mustard and mayo or chicken salad or ham with ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, and all of them with cheese of course! Do burgers and hotdogs count too? Great thing about sandwiches is the variety. This film is a gem, showcasing Chevy Chase’s talent for goofiness. A dumb clutz stumbling through life. There are worthy sequels, the funniest aspect being different actors for the kids. And cousin Eddie returns too.

I used to ride motorcycles, but that also makes me sick now. I've been to multiple doctors about it, and none of them have any more to say about it beyond "This sometimes happens to people when they get older." It's so bad that I have even got sick changing the oil under my car. Life isn't fair. Sure I can take medication for it, but that medication puts me to sleep! Not good on a motorcycle.

This stood Me in good stead and fortunately I never had a significant mishap although I had a Couple of Close Calls. An old Friend who still rides & is the same age as Me, was wanting Me to buy a Bike and take a long trip with him someplace. The Idea appealed to Me greatly. Sadly I don't trust My balance nor My reaction time. And older people don't mend as fast. I had to decline. I doubt I will ever Ride again, but Man, do I have amazing Memories.

I'm not sure if there's an equivalent for you, but Hamburger Helper is an American product, a box containing quick cooking pasta along with a sauce mix. You add the ground beef (and maybe some veggies) along with some milk/butter/water, and it 'Helps' you put together a quick, filling meal (at least in theory). So, basically the Hamburger patties are made with ground up pasta & sauce mix (which is much cheaper than hamburger, but as Clark said, contains no meat)

Currently, I am really liking the Boar's Head Cajun Turkey and colby jack cheese on a brioche bun with mayo on the bottom and a little horseradish sauce on top...perfect amount of spicy. I had an uncle that had a favorite sandwich he would make that literally made me want to hurl. Peanut butter, mayo and tomato....he would mix the peanut butter and mayo together until it made something that resembled baby poo, spread that on white bread and add slices of tomato. It was the nastiest damn thing ever, I would rather eat dirt! He was the uncle that everyone in the family knew was nanners...he did other goofy shite as well...like our very own cousin Eddie.
