Here are all the changes to the game since the release of this guide: 7.05 Patch Notes: Thunder 1 and 3's potencies were adjusted slightly. This doesn't really change how you use them. More importantly, Umbral Soul (Which was added at level 35 as of patch 7.01) was adjusted: It now freezes the Umbral Ice timer when used. Furthermore, if used when out of combat, it immediately maxes out your MP and maxes you out to Umbral Ice 3, so you only need to press it once. The timer is frozen until you cast something else. This means when running between fights, you simply have to switch to ice, and use Umbral Soul ONCE and you're good. If something like a cutscene appears in a fight, removing control of your character, if you can see it coming, using Umbral Soul before you lose control can preserve your Umbral Ice state until after the mechanic! 7.01 Patch Notes: Umbral Soul, which previously was a level 76 spell, has been moved down to level 35. You need to be in Umbral Ice to use it, and it simply increases your Umbral Ice state by 1, and recovers MP as if you cast an Ice Spell to do so - so like casting Blizzard 1 but with no target. When running between fights, use Transpose to switch to Umbral Ice and then repeatedly use Umbral Soul. When downtime presents itself in a fight, you can do this too.

It begins!

As someone still in ARR trying to get the black mage relic weapon and for some reason not progressing msq till I get it, these changes are actuly very good. For level 50 at least. Cus if swift cast and the thunder proc no longer being random I can plan my things ahead and thanks to the changes to the mana fund (I forgot its name) I can have an actual burst using buffs from other players. Ik its early to care for stuff like these but I'm a black mage! I want to do big damage even early!

I've really been enjoying the DT Black Mage. Removing the random procs, allowing for consistent weaving after thunder, makes it really enjoyable, in my opinion. Sharpcast management was probably my least favorite part of BLM before

I must admit, I was spaming only f3 on my fire rotation. It felt so bad to sit and long cast for everything that I droped Black mage for a got while. But now, I think it's time to pick it up again!

Definitely enjoying these guides but to do a bit of keybind discussion. My preference is 1-5,F1-F5, +Alt1-5,+AltF1-F5. With alt being held for AoE. Then it makes more sense to put the key binds sideways : - Thunder on 1 & Alt1 - Fire on 2-4 & Alt2-4 - Ice on F2-4 & AltF2-4 - and polyglot etc on 5s - with instants mostly on qertfgzxcv

Another small tip - Surecast also stops knockbacks even when you aren't casting something.

Sleep is very good when the tank or healer die in dungeons. Ideally have a macro up that will call out for your team to stop attacking so you can use sleep and simply raise the tank, then have them healed and resume where you left off. Avoided me many wipes.

oh that was *fast* for the first guide :O blm was the first job i tried after DT launch and i was quite confused by some of the changes (to be fair this is true for all jobs now, they are mostly the same but *something* still feels off, though with time i will adjust!) i was very amused by 12:53 "doing this is better than casting nothing while walking!" because i am one of the rare blms that can and will cast scathe while sprinting through a dungeon. its small but its more than nothing! this also makes me slightly sad that just being in ice state doesn't regen mana anymore, i used to upkeep ice whenever i am running in a dungeon just so i am fully prepped with mana for the next mob group/boss, but ah well. its a small loss all things considered also i am sure it was said somewhere within the video, but i cannot find the specific spot for it: does thunder *only* prog activate when swapping between states/gaining a state? I feel like it used to be random that it can just happen at any point during your rotation (oh haha, just noticed its explained in the credits how it used to work), so i am not quite sure what the full ruleset for it is now

I don’t know if someone else has asked this already, but what would you say to using Lucid Dreaming to cast Scathe repeatedly while a tank is in the middle of pulling in a large group of enemies over a long distance? Would it be worthwhile, or would the slightly larger use compared to recovery of MP make it not so worth it?

Did they actually manage to make low-level Black Mage feel even more awkward?

It was very funny pulling up my lvl 50 BLM for some ARR society quests and gradually realizing it was playing differently than I had learned. Had no idea these changes were coming, but they seem good? As much as I can say as a non-BLM main lmao
