Try reading a book while eating. You have to hold the book with one hand and with the other you take slow bites. You will pause between bites to see where the book story is going and eventually you will eat normally again. Hope it helps

I have a habit of eating fast because often times, when I do eat I'm really hungry and just inhale everything. My eating habits aren't the best, I only eat once a day (or twice if someone cooks dinner) and I rarely eat snacks. I mostly got into that habit so I wouldn't have to worry my dad about spending more money on food, since we were always tight on money anyways.

@@sup.2318 I think reading is a great idea but a lot of families like my own want everyone at the dinner table being present while eating. Chop sticks. I eat quickly, always have. I liked using chopsticks at restaurants because it made me slow down and concentrate, and enjoy my food more. I started taking the disposable ones home, and now if it's small enough to go between chopsticks, it does. It really helps me slow down. Next time you're at a job that limits lunch... Try eating big satiating meals full of protein and without sugar... before work and after work. My brother has this issue - he is in the military and during basic training he often had barely 5 minutes per meal to eat and he needed to inhale as many calories as possible so he didn't die. The meal times were like 20 or 30 minutes tops, but how long you got depended on when you got released. He often was the last group to arrive. Then he'd have to wait in line for food. By the time he sat down he'd legit have less than 5 minutes a lot of the time. And if he was late he'd get in trouble. But not eating he'd have no energy. My brother went into the military fairly overweight but strong, and came out so insanely fit/slim because of the insane amount of exercise they do at basic. He said he was lucky he was overweight, because people that went in super slim and fit were like alarmingly underweight when they left because of the food situation. Unfortunately he still eats that fast a lot of the time. He's slowed down a bit, but it's alarming. I have heard there's a similar phenomenon for inmates because they also need to eat quickly for various reasons.

@NutritionByKylie
@NutritionByKylie Жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear that :( A lot of what makes a behavior disordered or not is the intention behind why we do it and what we hope to accomplish. In this case, a lot of people can struggle with eating too quickly which can result in decreased attentiveness to fullness cues (which can result in feeling sick after a meal) or, in my case, GI issues. It may be helpful to clarify your own intentions with a professional if you feel like this behavior stems from disordered thoughts. I wish you all the best in your health journey!!
@ambershannon6694
@ambershannon6694 Жыл бұрын
@@NutritionByKylie I agree. I think this is a good method if the intention is to slow down an abnormally speedy consumption. I've worked restaurant jobs the majority of my life and should definitely slow down to ease the stress on my digestive track, so I get it. Everyone is working with different skills, goals and will need different advice. So there isn't anything really wrong with what you said, but it can be a good opportunity to point out the difference between eating slowly with the intention to be kind to your body vs. eating slowly to deprive or try to "extend" your calories. ❤

I noticed this effect on accident. Like when I'm eating with other people and there's lots of conversation going on, the food is an interruption to the conversation so it's natural to put my utensil down. I eat a lot slower when I'm eating with other people

add in drinking water between bites and that helps with digestion and also to further slow down eating. This has helped me a lot especially when eating foods that would normally hurt my stomach (intolerance and spicey foods)

I have a 20 min lunch period. Pur school also cheats us because our 5 minute passing period is counted in our lunch. This is also not counting the amount of time it takes for someone to unlock the door when I come in from recess and the long line for the microwave or lunch line. If I wait in the microwave or lunch line I have 4-5 to eat and if I don't wait in any line I have around 6-7 minutes to eat.

This is really useful, I'll try it for sure! I definitely eat way too fast and don't chew enough; sometimes I finish my food and I don't even remember the process of eating it - like "what, finished already?"

I think the reason why many have learnt to inhale their food is lunch breaks are pretty short. I don't have problems when inhaling my food. I mean, I do inhale it. I have a habit of drinking a lot of water. People look at me funny when I say, I am full and I need water. " How can you fit it?" It just does and it helps.

thank you for this awesome tip! I trained myself through school cafeteria to always eat super fast. my current employer basicly 'forces' us to do a 1h lunchbreak, which in the past i spend with 20 minutes of eating and 40 minutes of mindless boredom. this technique helped me eat slower already. I also started putting down my fork and drinking some sips of water with every 2-3 bites, since we have a free watermachine in the lunchroom. That way i not only eat slower, but the water also increases fullness plus after lunch i've always had like atleast 1 liter of water intake, helping with hydration aswell

I had this problem as a kid. We made rice a lot at our home. And I would legit swallow whole spoon fulls of rice without chewing. As kid, we were told we couldn't watch TV until we finished our food. So huffing down food as quickly as possible was a big priority. 😂😂 Those were great times.

I used to be notorious for 'inhaling' my food. I still have to be mindful of how fast I'm eating. That is the reason we are told not to multitask while eating; we actually pay attention to the food we are ingesting when we aren't doing anything else. The exception is having good conversations.

You seem pretty young so I'm not sure how much you control the food being bought at home, but maybe you could look into meal-prepping or batch prepping a few base ingredients and making meals out of them (cook once, eat all week style?). Alternatively, just making up a list of quick meals and having the ingredients stocked (mini frozen pizzas with frozen vegetables that you can quickly heat up, tuna, cooked chickpeas for veggie bowls or chickpea salad sandwiches, hummus + veggies + pita, etc). I've also had some stomach issues and I know I'll only be able to eat healthily within my restrictions if I have some sort of plan in place.

I would love it if companies/working places could consider giving a whole hour (or even 'just' 45 minutes) to eat because anything around 30 minutes is just ridiculous. I have developed this unhealthy habit of rushing through my meal and swallowing bites whithout really chewing them first and not a freaking day goes by where I don't feel bloated or unwell.
