As a veteran who through hiked the AT in 2023, I was not surprised by the number of veterans I met who were also through hiking. One thing in common was all suffered various degrees of PTSD and had decided to use the AT as sort of therapy. I can say when I reached Maine and the summit, the crap that I had let bother me on day 1 was long gone and I personally think now, I'm a better person and I thank my fellow hikers, Trail Angels and the AT for that. In those temperatures, you need to keep your water bottles, fuel canister, water filter, electronics, in a bag in the bottom of your bag. If your water bottles froze and your water filter was exposed, then the water crystals in the filter probably froze. If so, I would suggest you get a new water filter. Frozen water crystals will break down the filter membrane on your filter. Best of luck out there.
