The true purpose of an HOA is to keep out "Undesirables"
@michaelkennedy25286 ай бұрын
FTS, I will NEVER live in an HOA community again. I once lived in a gated community that had million dollar homes, I thought I would be comfortable there, but that did not last long at all. One day I popped the hood and was literally just checking the oil before I went on a trip. When I got back I had a warning letter that said basically " Working/repairing vehicles is strictly prohibited!!". I went to the HOA president and explained to him that I was just checking my oil level, that's it. He refused to retract the warning letter, as it "goes against your HOA record!" About two week later, I was cleaning out my trunk and removed the spare tire to really clean the trunk. About two days later I get a $600.00 (yes F'ing $600.00) notice that I have been fined for "working on my vehicle". That was such BS. Luckily my doorbell camera caught everything and I was able to show that I was NOT working on my vehicle and after the board member reviewed it for almost two damn weeks, they cancelled it, but I still had the "warning letter". I said screw that and bought some land, built a house and workshop. No more HOA (Hateful Old A$$holes) for me.
@superconscious.6 ай бұрын
just curious why you built a workshop?
@michaelkennedy25286 ай бұрын
@@superconscious. At my new place? I had to build a seperate building because the insurance company said that I would pay a lot more if I used my garage as a "workshop". A lift that I wanted would not fit in the garage with ceiling clearnce. Being detached according to the insurance mitigated the risk of fire ( did not understand that) despite cooking nearly everyday vs grinding or welding on ocassion. Building a workshop in that HOA place was not even an option, lot was way to small and the rules explicitly said the largest shed could be 80sqft.

HOA’s can literally make up any rule basically. As long as it’s not found to be discriminatory or targeting for harassment. Basically a huge development company buys a giant plot of land and decides to section it off into lots to build suburban housing. And they organize certain residents to basically “manage the neighborhood” to keep all the houses looking uniform and keep it a “good neighborhood” to encourage more people to want to live there. But a lot of the times it turns into total bs and these people just go in power trips against outlier people who they don’t want in their communities.

It is not uncommon for HOAs to be poorly managed in terms of finance. This is likely why they are concerned with potential litigation. It is entirely possible that there is very little available funding in their reserves to support paying for legal counsel. When i moved out here to Arizona, virtually every neighborhood has an HOA. It sucks, but its a constant revenue stream for a lot of these developers to open their own HOA, and then milk the neighborhood after they are built up. When we first moved in, they sent me a nastygram about some weeds in the front yard, and tried to fine me $150. I wrote back a legalese heavy letter, sent it certified to their office, explaining that i would not be paying their fine, as i had just moved in, was unsure of what was native vegetation, or part of my landscape, and then quoted several of their own bylaws regarding yard maintenance, and time to correct, and that i had only taken ownership of the home 3 weeks ago, which is not a reasonable time to correct any yard maintenance issue according to their own bylaws, and that i expected to not hear from them regarding the matter ever again. I then, like Parker, went to the next 2 HOA meetings, where i was the ONLY resident present. And the level of ass kissing i received was off the charts. And i have received NOTHING from the HOA other than my receipt ever since then. It is as if i have been placed on a "do not mess with this guy" list, and have not heard a peep out of them since.

There is a nonfunctional pickup with out of state plates parked in front of the neighbor's house (a different one). People leave their trash bins out all the time. You're a dentist and obviously well educated. Wouldn't you research what the HOA rules and regulation are regarding your development. So by not reading the rules, you are in violation and simply decide to do what you want. Suppose your neighbor decides he want to do what he wants, and so on. Maybe a little common sense is in order here.
@michaelkennedy25286 ай бұрын
This may surprise you, but education and profession have little to do with being smart lol. I have worked around surgeons in the operating room for 30 years, you would be amazed at just how dumb many of them are when it comes down to the most basic/ common sense things. Dr, Mitchell is certainly and exception to the rule, and very rare. Still, his profession and education does not mean he would have thought about researching before purchasing. One might even go as far as researching " will this truck even fit in my garage!" I once worked with a vascular surgeon that could not connect two rubber hoses together on a VP shunt after the neurosurgeon did the brain part ( look it up), and destroyed the tubing so bad that he had to pull out the majority of it, and that part cost 16k, not to mention the extended surgical and anesthesia time. Society puts to many folks on pedestals based off education and profession, when they should be on the ground with the rest of us mortals.

His brother Mitchell is much more level-headed and grounded. Parker thinks he can do what he wants.

I can tell you as much as dentist charge for their work, he can play this game for a while. I am not pissed at him, he can do what he wants, but if he were to go and survey a majority of these folks, they knew up front of many of the very rules he is complaining about. Part of what he is playing off of are the amount of views and comments he receives on the videos he makes. Only board members who are older people. They have no clue to what is going on here. My wife constantly complains about how the board argues over the dumbest stuff and wastes time. My wife just joined to get the playground area refreshed. The other board members think there are no kids here - but much like your area , most houses sold here are families with younger kids as the older people move out. Also, we live like a mile from the water and a boat ramp. HOA says no boats allowed period. I've had mine in the driveway several times for an entire week :). We also tried to change the bylaws but it requires to get a ton of signatures - just not worth it. Our HOA has tried to get an 'enforcement committee' but no success. Go figure, no one in the neighborhood wants to do it. The HOA doesn't want to hike dues to hire someone externally (thank god). We do have laws where you can't park a work truck in the driveway. One resident got fined for that. But they told him he can park it in the street. Does that make any sense? Now his truck is out front blocking the road... I'd rather have it in his driveway. I get the point of HOA's, I don't want people trashing the neighborhood bringing my property value down. But they have got to be sensible. I live next to the water and boat ramp. People should be allowed to bring there boats home to clean. Store in the front yard - no, I'm all for that rule. But in the driveway for a day or 2 - sure go for it. Thankfully I park my truck in the driveway and that is allowed here, but for you - WTF. I have a limited F-150, you also have a very nice truck. Let's be honest, these are nicer then some cars in the neighborhood! In the end, like my HOA it's nothing but old people running them that are completely out of touch. The younger people just don't have the time for this BS so are not involved. Thank god for my HOA my wife is changing that. But for a lot of people that's just not possible.

Parking a boat in the front yard does not lower property value. Do you see how stupid this is? Just get over yourself and quit clutching pearls over other people's business, kay?

Im so glad your holding your ground. I would do the same exact thing and would never back down. I would go as far as threatening to sue them unless they change the rule.... Your truck costs double what any persons "Car" is parked in their driveway. Idiots

Our HOA is pretty chill, like $40 every quarter, driveways with parked vehicles are okay as long as the driveway is kept clean and the vehicle doesn’t look abandoned.

One more sub from Perth Western Australia. Park anywhere you like bro. It's your home. Had something similar in regards to parking at a strata set of units.

Brother, I am the same way, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Keep marching strong. AZ has nice houses if you ever want to move back I could use a cool dentist haha. Have a Merry Christmas.

The rules existed in the community before your home was built. You pay the management company to enforce those rules. You can only blame yourself for buying a home in a covenant protected community. Have a nice day.

Look into the laws in how to dissolve an HOA or have your house removed from it. I will never buy a home with an HOA looking over it. They start out with good intentions, but many end up with the wrong people running it and telling you what you can and can't do to the property YOU own.

In Florida, HB1203 just passed and it prevents hOAs from banning pickup or work trucks (non-commercial) from your property. Does a lot more to regulate HOAs too.

I live in an HOA and did not know it when I moved in. They dont pay my bills, and I dont need a babysitter. I bought the property period.

I lived in a neighborhood like this and found a loophole. With my hoa at the time, if your vehicle is "BROKEN" or "INOPERABLE " you can have it in the driveway as long as you are actively working on it. So I just threw a jack under it everyday when I got home lol. I couldn't park in my garage because it was a rehearsal space for my band. They didn't like that either 😂😂😂😂😂

Does your truck extend out from the driveway into the sidewalk? If so, that’s probably the violation. The sidewalk is public property. Not an extension of the driveway like so many pickup drivers think.

And they wonder why a guy would buy a kamatsu 355a Dozier weld armour on it fill said armour with concrete mount a 50 caliber bmg on the rear, cameras to see, a pneumatic air system to keep the cameras lenses clean and cruise it around town. Be a damn shame if that ever happened again.

I have never or will ever live in an HOA community. Funny story ,my father moonlighted by doing minor work and fixing refrigeration in vehicles after he got home from his full time job . It wasn't every day just once in a while , their were to old ladies lived in our neighborhood that kept calling cops on my dad although cops came and he was never cited for anything cops would leave and be back next week . We had an old 1966 Ford van and an old 1968 Dodge Plumbing truck my dad had ,both licensed and insured funny how they were parked in front of those ladies house on a public street for a couple weeks .Never had another complaint.

I had something g similar happen in my first condo I bought. They had assigned parking and covered . I’m a mobile diesel mechanic and needed my service truck for work. I’d park in my assigned parking and the truck did fight within the lines I got a letter saying I can’t have it here blah blah blah. I went to the meeting and told them they are inhibiting my right to work and make a living to support my family. They never bothered me again lol

Lesson learned for you - read all documents BEFORE signing on the dotted line. I agree the prohibition of parking your truck in your driveway is ridiculous. That said, it's a rule, you know it's a rule, and you know the mechanism for changing it. You also know the fine for breaking it. Either have enough class and integrity put on your running shoes and get 160 signatures, or get out your checkbook. Or comply with the rule. You're not a victim here, just coming off a whiney entitled Karen. My 2 cents.

My mum lives in sunny hot Queensland Australia, and she owns her home under an HOA, and she cant get solar installed, and they wont even let her get mini split air conditioner installed. Its almost 40 Celsius every day now and not allowed air conditioning. Also when i go to visit, i have to park in a designated visitor parking area almost 500m away, which as a disabled person is absolutely unreasonable. Why anyone would live under an hoa baffles me.
