This foal was completely untouched just 1 week ago! He’s now very controllable and obedient. As part of his training I want to make sure he is introduced to the feeling of things being on and around his flank and belly which will help him to not kick out and to be more relaxed when he wears a saddle. On day 7 I’m happy with Star’s progress and looking forward to the last 3 lessons with him!

Good lesson today I would say that little colt earned himself a solid A👍. And to avoid getting kicked when doing this type of training, I'll remember to "keep their face close to me." Great tip! Thanks.🙏

It’s easy to see the difference in these two foals. This foal is curious, willing and looking to find the right answer. The other foal is disrespectful, dangerous and wants to be the boss. You handle both of them appropriately. Shows an excellent contrast on how training has to change to suit the individual horse

When should the colt be separated from it's mom?

Weaning is a tricky process. Typically between 6-8 months of age.

These foals are coming along way. I'm totally okay with firm, but not harsh whacks with the lunge whip/stick and string that you do. I'm fine with people who either don't make contact or do make contact with that kind of training aid. For me, I'll tell them to move, instead of ask because I just had an argument with someone in the comment section when I mentioned ask, so now I'm using the word 'tell' instead since horses don't ask, and if they don't do what I tell them, I'll tell them again as many times as I want. If they keep repeating not to do what I want them to do, I'll either make contact on the ground or make firm but not harmful contact on the horse to make them move. It what high horses do. And can I say that the person I argued with thinks heirachy is an excuse because he thinks there's no such thing? I'll told this person examples on why there is such a thing, like elephants. When poachers kill off the older male ones, the young ones cause destruction because they don't have that leadership. Any animal that's in s group has a leader. If you and I were horses, and yes, I know we can't act like them, I'm saying if we were horses, and if it's just the two of us, you'll be high horse and I'll be your follower. In a herd, I'll be boss mare, second in command. It's the same thing as training a horse. A high horse can tell other what to do in their herd, but they know their owner or trainer is higher than them.

This is a really good explanation of how it works with the herd dynamics that few people remember is how horses actually communicate! A horse should never kick or bite his leader so it keeps us so much safer if we can prove to them that we can be a good leader. Thanks for your comment and I hope everyone reads it and learns something!

A bit early to be training like this, you might try earning his trust.

Never too early, especially with babies and young ones. They learn faster than adults as they don't have previous experience, so they'll either push or give and see what's what
