Cab Calloway discusses the influence of Louis Armstrong on his career and the rewards of being an entertainer.
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's.

I like how when Cab smiles you can see his younger self. Although he looks a little uncomfortable in front of the camera, this was a good interview. I also recommend Cab's autobiography "Of Minnie The Moocher and Me", which goes even further into life as a musician and a performer.

If you didn't know better you might think he were a college professor rather than an outrageous entertainer. So reserved and intelligent.

well ironically enough he supported a school in Delaware named after him: Cab Calloway School of the Arts. I bet he have would have been a college professor (and lawyer) if he wasn't The Hi De Ho Man.

There's two people that I wish to have seen live. That's Billie holiday. And mr cab Calloway. I'd give everything to see them. Even my 2000 dollar Tv and ps4. Skateboarding.. my girlfriend. Though I'd love to take her along with me... but I'd give it all up too see them.

It should be mentioned here (for unfortunately the person who posted this didn't) that this interview was done with Cab by James Day in 1974 at WNET in Boston or wherever. Hiddie Ho boys and girls. This guy is nothing short of phenomenal and why Jive music made a comeback in the mid to late 90's with bands like Bare Naked Ladies.

Two generations?. Im in my early 20s. Heard minnie the moocher and loved it. Sent it to my friends and they loved it too. We're probably the 4th or 5th generation of fans. Testament to how talented this man was.

_In December 1945, Calloway and his friend Felix H. Payne Jr. were beaten by a police officer, William E. Todd, and arrested in Kansas City, Missouri after attempting to visit bandleader Lionel Hampton at the whites-only Pla-Mor Ballroom. They were taken to the hospital for injuries, then charged with intoxication and resisting arrest. When Hampton learned of the incident he refused to continue the concert.[62] Todd said he was informed by the manager who didn't recognize Calloway that they were attempting to enter. He claimed they refused to leave and struck him. Calloway and Payne denied his claims and maintained they had been sober; the charges were dismissed. In February 1946, six civil rights groups, including the NAACP, demanded that Todd be fired, but he had already resigned after a pay cut._

Cab Calloway didn't just inspire many artists and performers who are nowadays more famous than him. He also was the model for a few cartoon characters. And one of the most interesting Disney villains - Dr. Facilier aka "The Shadowman" from "The Princess And The Frog" - has been inspired by Cab Calloway and his outrageous dance movements.

Many well known artists have been inspired by Cab Calloway, but Cab Calloway himself isn't exactly a household name anymore - although some people might've become acquainted with him because of his hilarious performance in the first "Blues Brothers" movie. But hardly anyone noticed that the Disney villain "Dr. Facilier" from "The Princess And The Frog" has also been inspired by Cab Calloway's singing and his outrageous dance moves.

I wish I could have talked to him. I'm sure he knew and talked with Dutch Schultz who owned the Cotton Club. I would have loved to have heard gangster stories he was around the originals. Lucky Luciano Meyer Lansky Bugsy Siegel all those guys.

I could not disagree more. Day uses his questions as tools to penetrate his subjects and allows the interview to flow naturally. Unlike most interviewers, Mr. Day isn't letting his ego get in the way.
