A few of the people in the comments clearly have never worked with a horse that isn't afraid to challenge before. You're doing great. Rapid fire correction definitely works well for her because it's a more natural way to address her behavior. A lot of people don't realize that's what animals do. Only predators stalk and move slowly. When it comes to parents dealing with babies or pecking order squabbles, it's always quick nips and movements. Pecking order fights might happen over a longer period of time, but the emphasis is still the same. It also helps to be in the moment so the horse knows exactly what behavior it was that caused the correction so that they can learn quicker.

This mare is easily frustrated when she doesn’t understand. She’s so smart though and quickly figures things out once she gets past the frustration. I like her so much!

Per usual, you have done an amazing job on her. The subtle nuances are so interesting and you, Sam, are so quick to see them. In this video it seems like she’s between two world and hasn’t quite figured out which side she wants to be on. But she is definitely warming up to you. She also seems pretty smart. It is so fantastic to see more and more equestrians using methods like this. Growing up with horses, aggressive and abusive techniques were the norm. Spurs. Wire bits. Studded nose bands. Whipping, pinching, and punching. I even witnessed trainers hang tires throughout a young horses stall so they would constantly get bumped and never be able to relax in an attempt to exhaust it. Horses were crabby and bitter and filled with bad habits. I finally had to leave the horse world because it was too depressing. I support this 100%.

She already seems to be starting show a little bit more submission and trust to you. You are doing a good job with her 🙂

I've watched the last couple of your videos with this mare. Major props to you for staying so calm and centered, even when she acts aggressive! From what I can tell, she seems to be a very emotional horse. By staying centered in your own emotions and making it clear what you want from her, you are showing her that the right answer is to do things calmly and effectively like you, and not overreacting. Great work so far and looking forward to seeing more!

I think you are doing an amazing job with her! Don’t listen to the critics. You are making her world safer and everyone who will come in contact with the horse. Drives me crazy when people think you are being mean, when you are just trying to make the life of the horse easier, and the life of future owners a joy, instead of a nightmare. This horse has an interesting temperament. I wonder if she was the lead or alpha mare? Not afraid of much. And dedinitely smart! She seems very sensible about most things.

I love watching your videos with this mare, they are so informative and I am learning a lot. As cool as it is to watch the mustangs that are "easier" and accept human contact/leadership more readily, I think this is more valuable to see as a potential mustang adopter. I really want to adopt a wild mustang someday, and who knows what that mustang will be like? I could just as easily end up with a more fear-aggressive horse or a quiet, laid back one. You never know , and seeing trainers with horses like this is a good reminder of what could be in store for any adopter.

When dominant animals correct others of their species, they do it quickly. The rapidity of the response is probably more important than how severe the correction is. A failing of inexperienced dog trainers, for example, is to be slow to correct. That can then set things up so the trainer has to use more force. Your way of correcting this mare seems based on a good feeling for how animals communicate.

New follower and this thread is the deepest I've delved into the mustang training. I really appreciate your horsemanship skills. That said, I'm curious about the length of the training sessions. Many (domestic) horse trainers often suggest ending a session at the first "win" perhaps like the beginning of this video, when she began departing and yielding more satisfactorily. As to avoid confusion or frustration, further fights. Basically to say, better to end quickly on a good note than not. Is your method of multiple lessons per session, simply "different strokes for different folks" or more related to the limited training time before EMM?

I thought of some names in Spanish because she looks Spanish. Roble is an oak, Ceniza is ash, (Cenicienta is Cinderella!) I looked up Soot because she is a "sooty" buckskin and it's Hollín. I know Spanish but I didn't know that word!

Did any of your horses freak out over being touched by both hands at the same time? When I trained my wild filly, as I got her accustomed to the feel of hands on her, she didn't seem to care about my hand on her neck.For instance if I had my hand on her neck, then put my other hand say, on her chest at the same time, she spazzed the first few times. Good job with Tuffy!! Until you give us a name, I'll just call her Tuffy . 😁
