Hi Guys! Currently I'm on my infectious diseases rotation (a sub-specialty of internal medicine). Today I'm taking you to the hospital to see what a day is like in this specialty! The focus is treating infections - viruses, bacteria or fungus. All sorts of "weird and wonderful" things!
THIS WEEK'S FEATURED Q&A:
4:42 "How do you manage to memorize so much?" (question by Irhan Naqshandi)
But also discussed...
1:40 "Why is the ward?" (question by soccerlover401)
2:46 Why should you get the flu shot? (soap box moment!)
COMMENT below to say hi or if you have a question you want featured in upcoming videos!

My son, when he was 13 months was in the infectious disease department for what they thought was meningitis. It was the scariest week of our lives. The doctors were so fantastic and helped us feel at peace with what was going on. Thank you for caring :-)

ooo great question! very relevant during this rotation. If you use personal protective equipment well (gloves, gown, mask) and wash your hands well, you should be fine! Honestly, the hospital and nurses are excellent about putting signs up to warn you about how protect yourself. BUT it does cross my mind sometimes.. its probably tougher for emergency doctors who are front line when patients first come into the hospital though!

Variable by hospitals. But several ED I worked with have a semi open protection suite that a helmet with mask cover your entire head and a gown like dress. An air intaker with HEPA filter on your waist will pump the clean air directly into the helmet.

I remember that episode Grey's Anatomy when a resident got in contact with an HIV+ person's blood and they showed how hard it was for her to not know for about 6 weeks if you will be positive or not... I know it's TV drama again there but I imagine skin-blood-contact is not so unlikely...

I’m 13 and Im studying microbiology :) I have been researching it for a few years and I like learning about infectious diseases. I want to work in a biohazard safety level 3 or 4 lab with the most pathogenic microbes. I have researched the basics, and the types of conditions. I am learning the genetics and also I am learning the body’s response to an infection. I am really interested in how the body responds, and why it can go wrong, like for example septicemia. Diseases/microbes that I have researched: -Influenza (different types) -skin infections (mostly cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis) -Hemorrhagic diseases (mainly filoviruses, such as Ebola and Marburg) -meningitis (both viral and bacterial) -encephalitis -meningoencephalitis -mrsa -prion diseases -polio -rabies -pertussis -diptheria -parasitic infections (eww) -primary amebic meningoencephalitis -and more :D Sorry this list is long but I just love this . I have aspergers and microbiology is my interest. I have read a LOT of things but I can’t remember all Oh yeah also I read about this past epidemic that happened a little after the 1918 influenza pandemic called Encephalitis Lethargica. Pretty scary stuff. Also I’m memorizing and understanding medical terms. I’m gonna stop writing now, sorry this is so long.

your little plug: YES! thank you. i am one of those people. i am immunocompromised. originally i was told i couldn’t have certain types of shots because i’m allergic to eggs. this allergies developed as an adult. then i was diagnosed immunocompromised. so now i can’t be around people who have had live, weakened virus inoculations because after their body fights off the virus, it “sheds” it and i could still catch it just like any other illness. i’m not entirely sure how i’m suppose to know if some stranger in public has had a live, weakened virus vaccine other than going up to them and asking them... thankfully, none of this occurred until i was adult so most of the really important and subsequently dangerous illnesses, i have already been vaccinated for.

My study method is to have the key words for like the chapter you’ve read through written down and then just write out everything in a diagram with pencil and then read through the chapter and add the things you missed with a blue pen. The I like to quiz and get quizzed by another student and get asked to explain that concept or this key word. And just teaching it to others really help too.

What's the difference between the colours of the scrubs? Why are some scrubs blue others green? Some pink?
@madelineheinle4131
@madelineheinle4131 6 жыл бұрын
Nataly Petser with some hospitals, different colors reference what field of medical you are in, like if you are in neurology you might wear navy blue or if you are an assistant nurse you might wear light pink. Colors can also tell you if the doctor practices specifically at that hospital or is from a neighboring hospital. All this really can depend on the hospital you go to and what they decide to do with their identification system

*QUESTIONS:* Who decides what sort of rotations you get to do? If you've already decided to do Internal Medicine, why are you doing rotations in other fields during residency? I was under the impression that rotations were something you did in med school. When you were in med school, did the school allow you to try a little of everything before choosing what you wanted to go into (were these called rotations in med school too?) or was it more so the student's responsibility to find different experience opportunities in the fields that interested them? Lots of questions but all involving rotations or clinical or whatever it is called. I'm not in the medical field so I'm not familiar with the proper terminology. Hopefully, you'll be able to answer these in the next Q&A! PS - Super interesting video, as always, Siobhan! Thank you 🤗

Thank you for letting us see what your infectious diseases rotation looks like. Drawing diagrams and flash cards is what works for me in med school, I would try some of the other ones you said. By the way, I would love to know some time management tips you may have when it comes to studying. Lots of love!

When you roam the hospital all day, exposed to so many bacteria and stuff but still so fresh! Haha. Thanks for your vids, it inspired me to pursue medicine. :) hopefully by next year. Fingers crossed!

Hey there. new subscriber and the cartoon explaining different things in non-medical terms makes me understand what these terms are. Ever thought about being an OB? I feel that with your bubbly personality they would love you.

Hi Carrie! Welcome! You are right I love women's health and did think about OB at one point... i'm still considering obstetric medicine (not delivering the babies, but helping to manage medical concerns during pregnancy)! Thanks I appreciate the feedback :)

I really look forward to every update on Sunday (Australian time)! (I'm totally addicted) If you are wanting some warmer weather at this time of year you should head down under - currently around 36 degC! Have you ever considered doing VLOGMAS? Any thought of doing videos that show more of a day in the life - I think what we (non-medical professionals) often forget is that doctors are normal humans too and lead normal lives. How do you keep track of your busy days, do you use bullet journals or some other technique? Very best wishes from Australia!
