I work full time as an outpatient office coordinator and part time as an inpatient unit secretary. The phone calls, needing a nap in your car, and coffee is so real! 😂

I’m a HUC as well. Your a younger version of me. I work 12 hr shift and girlllll…..ok. Your video was on point. Hopefully I will be leaving my job as a HUC on the Covid unit to l&d.

Thank you so much! So my local community college had a grant for free classes for this position which I took. I’m not too sure if that helped but I did put that on my resume. (Essential skills for a healthcare worker, administrative assistant course). Some of my coworkers who were hired with me did not have relevant experience and they were hired also. Honestly they look for a lot of customer service experience, phone etiquette and someone who is willing to learn! This position is pretty entry level in my state (MD) so little to no experience is necessary.

My biggest tip would be to highlight your experiences on your resume that can be translated to this positions job duties. If you are able to, take a course or two that is relevant to health care administrative duties. But it isn’t necessary. Good Luck!

Do phone calls become overwhelming like with a lot of information to pass on to other nurses or what do phone calls consist of mostly?

Yes.. they can become overwhelming when the nurses and doctors are busy on the floor.. but majority of the time we do not pass on too much information we just pass the entire call. Most calls consist of other departments trying to speak w doctors or nurses, dietary, security, patients. Anything you can think of honestly but it is not hard.

Hey boo are u still at this job i have been in the hospital as a evs worker for 5 years i decided to apply and i got a interview the manger was really nice and said i should be hereing from hr early next week she also said she look fowards to working with me in the future in a thank u enail i sent her to follow up after interview so im not sure if its yay or nay yet but im hoping fingers crossed😊

Yes, they don’t care but as long as you can type etc efficiently that’s all that matter

At the time I was making the minimum wage in MD which was 11.75 unfortunately. But other hospitals I know start at $17

I live in MD and just got hired as a unit secretary, I am guessing which hospital you work in and I think its the same one I got hired in, my question is do all unit secretaries wear scrubs or is it different by the unit? I want to wear scrubs but I think a different uniform was mentioned.

I was working at Hopkins Bayview.. so my dept was the OR scrubs most other departments i saw were black top and bottoms. I’m not exactly sure though.

I chose 8hrs 7a-3p but there were other options. 11p-7a, 3p-11p, or 7p-7

No, I started to take the courses but I did not finish. It was not a requirement for this position.

I took a medical front office course at my local community college (CCBC) online for free through a grant they have continuously which is actually still going on right now. I did not take the exam or finish the courses due to various reasons. But most hospitals around me do not require any education for this position besides High School Diploma or GED
