Hi there! I work at an oncology research laboratory 🥼 I say if you want a lot of exposure to work as a generalist first. You can work in many different settings such as hospital, reference, and research. The hospital will have the most variety I would say :)

Its probably different for everyone but im currently in a MLS Program and the classes are so much easier for me than the other classes that I took beforehand.

Hi Jonathan thanks for reaching out! I was in the same exact place that you were I actually got a C in organic chemistry as well. I was able to get into my program regardless of that. I’m actually putting out a video that talks about the classes I took to get into the program and I’ll be uploading that by later tonight or early tomorrow morning. You can definitely do it and don’t let your grades discourage you too much. Just make sure you write a good statement when you apply to the program.

I definitely do feel like the classes in the MLS program or easier than the pre-requisite courses. There were still some challenging ones for me that’s for sure but overall they want you to succeed and do well.

I live in CA and the one of the requirements for the CLS program is at least a GPA greater than 3.00. I got in with a GPA of 3.25 and a good handful of Cs in my science classes. They don't expect perfection, but resiliency. So as long as you show all together that you are capable of working hard and are well rounded in other areas of your life then you should be fine

You don't need math per se if you end up doing a BS in MLS. I, on the other hand, started with a BS in Biochemistry 4+1 years to get my MLS degree and certification. I wanted to have a lot of opportunities that's why I chose biochem. MLS by itself doesn't get you further than med labs. With biochemistry you can specialize later in toxicity, forensic chemistry, biotechnology, etc etc. The downside for you could be the fact that it has a lot of math, less than physics more than any biology degree. Cal 1 2, differential equations, linear algebra 1 2, physics 1 and 2 physical chemistry 1 2 3 etc.

Check your state requirements. In CA you need a degree and certification to be a CLS.

Hi there! Work life balance, like any medical field, is difficult to find without you proactively taking your time off given. Especially now in a pandemic - and MLT/MLS is notorious for being short staffed. Not to try to scare you, but rather keep your eyes open to your mental health and take the time you earn off. Try to avoid burnout...

Been an MLS since 2022. I can confirm that work life balance has been rough for this field, and I'm currently looking into going part time for a season to hopefully avoid burnout. My lab has a high turnover rate too :/

I worked night shift for about a year when I first graduated. It really took a toll on my social life outside of work because I was always dead tired during the day when normal people could hang out. If you don't have a life outside of work, then it works out just fine

If you passed the ASCPi you should be able to still get a job. I don't think that should be an issue as many labs need people as there is huge staffing shortages.

Hi kaylie! Thank you I really appreciate it! I don’t think the lab will be completely automated in our lifetime. It has already been very automated but there still is a need for people because there’s always errors with machines or people to need it to fix issues that arise. There will be numerous jobs in the next I say 10+ years as there are always openings in the laboratory. Many people are retiring and there is an increase need to fill these positions.

I say, if you’re uncertain about the route, you should not pursue it. I struggled in chemistry as well, but I did not find that. I needed to much of it while working in the laboratory. I say you should definitely go after a career you’re very passionate about and maybe take some time to search within yourself to see what would be the best fit for you. In reality once you think about it, you can always switch careers but you definitely want to do something that is more fulfilling in your life.

Everything requires work, even if you go into another field. Nothing is easy in my opinion.

I don’t believe so. I’m sure you already have a strong science background basically you’re taking a lot of classes to supplement what you’ve already learned. You’ll be taking bio chemistry, immunology... etc the list goes on! Have you already looked into programs you’re interested in?

Both are effective forms of communication :) it does depend on where you work. If you work at a smaller facility it’s probably easier to go and ask questions than a larger one.

While working in the pharmacy, the pharmacists I would work with told me they wish they pursued something else. Little support from corporate. Saturation in the job market. Those are just a few reasons but I'm very happy I chose a different path as I am a physician assistant student now. In the future it will give me the opportunity to work with patients directly to diagnose and treat them. I also like the flexibility to switch specialties and I do not feel tied down to just one. I know I am replying years later so I would love to know how pharmacy school went/is going and if you were able to secure a job. Best of luck :)

There’s different types of laboratories you can work out. As a medical technologist, you typically do not do any research per se, but you can work at a research laboratory.

I feel like we should make more. I work in research now and the pay is slightly better. It still should be higher though. I do feel slightly overworked as the majority in this field do but thats for all medical workers. I feel appreciated at my workplace which makes up for it slightly.

Hello! I am currently doing clinical rotations during my senior year in the MLS program. For my program, we do have 40 hours of clinical per week. 8 hours a day, and 5 times a week. They started in November and go until June. It seems like a lot when you have to account for the assignments and weekly quizzes we take on top of that, but the experience is wonderful.

We do half semester (3 months), 24 hrs a week clinicals, and next year, in my final year of study I'll be doing clinicals the whole year to choose a specialty (elective year) in fields ranging from Medical Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Haematology, Immunohaematology, Clinical Chemistry, Cytology, Histology, Clinical Pathology, or Cytogenetics. Yes, it is the same. The two names for the profession are the same. One job i was considered a medical technologist and the other a laboratory technician. It just depends on the hiring site.

We get trained while on the job. There is some background knowledge that you should already have from school but for the most part you do get a chance to relearn everything until you feel comfortable to work on your own.

@@RosaPerez Yes or even just an MLT. But where I live programs for it aren't really around. My school has nursing programs as well as surgical tech, but as an MLT hard to get in.

Would you consider moving or do you want to stay in the area. If MLT is difficult to get in I would say nursing is a better option.
