despite me being only 13, i’ve always loved animals and especially horses. i really aspire to be an equine vet some day and while it may change, it doesn’t look likely. i’m homeschooled tho which makes it so much harder but i’m currently volunteering at my local horse riding school farm which has been so amazing for me. just being around the horses and learning their behaviour is wonderful. i hope to be able to somehow learn more than i would at school and be an equine vet one day, this video was wonderful to watch :) ❤️ ps. would you mind explaining how things work for you as you have your own horses too? like how does it all balance with work and caring for your own as that’s what i’d like one day :) 💕

Thx so much for this, Holly. Didn’t want to bug for you to do this, knew there could be privacy issues possible etc so so glad you were finally able and had a little time to do so. So much more relaxed and positive than I thought it might be (no doubt there is plenty of stress and occasional unfortunate out-come too that you can’t show). Really appreciated this. Thank you. So looking forward to seeing you back home in Ireland with your Dad and Khal and the gang.

From when I was 10-16 I wanted to be a vet too, I think most horse girls go through that phase in their lives, but I just found that I wouldn't be able to put down animals, AT ALL. And I dont think of myself as very emotional, but I just would not be able to do it. Especially a small animal vet, because those people love their dogs and love their cat ect. and they usually bring the children as well and seeing them lose their loving pet would be way to much for me! I was at the vet with my cat and this lady walks in with her cat in its cage and 10 min later she comes out with an empty crate and is crying her eyes out and looks so confused and broken. I had to help her to her car. It was horrible and I cannot do that to myself every single day. So please think about that before you make your choice, would you be able to do that?

I was interested to hear your comment about range and scope of diagnosis and treatment within BEH. Doctors [human type] from the UK often find the same in Australia--the clinic they work in often has a much bigger range of equipment and facilities than a UK NHS clinic, and as doctors they have much greater discretion over diagnostic tests and treatment. There is an expectation that, as the attending professional, they have the experience and knowledge to decide what needs to be done, and just do it. In the old days, the local GP was more-or-less on their own, whereas now there's a lot of emphasis on supporting sole practitioners with access to expert back-up. Bendigo would not be considered 'remote' by Australian standards, but you can still have that 'lonely' feeling standing in the middle of someone's paddock with a strangely-afflicted horse, especially a valuable one. A lot of your commenters are asking about being large-animal vets, but I suspect your particular gift is having been around horses your whole life, of being completely aware and comfortable with them, riding them, and then also having the clinical knowledge to support that lived experience. Someone learning about horses for the first time at vet school is going to struggle to achieve your level of confidence. I must admit I was freaked-out by the X-raying of the horse, though. I would have thought lead-lined gloves would have been de rigeur for the person holding the plate.

So neat to see your patients. Just curious, is there a reason horses with Afib get oral medication instead of IV?
