This is a good vid. Took my lcsw exam on Saturday and failed by 6 pts. I was so devastated, but imma build myself up and take it again. Thanks for all your vids, keep them coming.

Hi Xo Mikaj, Thanks for sharing. I’m sorry to hear you didn’t pass. It really does feel terrible to not pass. Remember that the test doesn’t measure your intelligence or how you are as a clinician. A lot of people don’t pass the first time around. You will pass eventually. You got this! Missing by only 6 points let’s you know that you understand the material and that you just were off by a few! @@xomikaj2820 You can do it! Trust in yourself! :) I just passed my clinical exam yesterday and I couldn’t have done that if I didn’t believe in myself and give myself grace. You will get there! @Melissa, thank you for this interesting video! I enjoyed this a lot as it looks very similar to my job at a primary care clinic.

I love viewing and supporting other social workers. Just subscribed! I’m an Lcsw at a cancer center. I also have a private practice. I love your stocked drawer!!! It’s what grounds us 😂. And I like how your employer allow you to work more so you can have three days every other week. I use to work at a FQHC where I was a therapist. Your work sounds really cool that you’re in integrated care addressing needs for walk-in patients. What would you say are the most common needs your patients have? Also, when you say supervise, is that for individuals clinical hours or for field placement?

Hi @donzelllampkins what state are you able to have your own practice as an LCSW? This is a huge determining factor for me as to whether I will pursue an LMHC degree or MSW->LMSW->LCSW. Any insight you have would be really appreciated. Thank you! ❤️

Hi there, Melissa! I love that you’ve taken the time do create these videos and I’m learning so much. I’m currently finishing up my undergrad. I was looking into both LPC work and LCSW. I’m torn between the two. I’m a COTA (certified occupational therapy assistant) & I thought that I would be simply continuing further to become an Occupational Therapist, but with the way life goes, that’s just not really feasible for me, but I’ve always loved the mental health aspect of what I do. I live close to a few universities that offer LPC & LCSW programs, and I’ve recently learned that I have the opportunity to possibly get a scholarship through a tribal organization that could pay for the entire program of becoming a LCSW. From a certain standpoint it would be obvious that getting out of grad school without loans would be amazing, but it’s not worth it if it’s not something your heart would be into. I was wondering if you could give some insight into the two career paths?

Hi Marc! Congrats on finishing up your undergrad program! Thats exciting! I am not too familiar with LPCs but I do know that they are considered counselors and not psychotherapists. This means that there are some states that do not allow LPCs to diagnose mental health conditions whereas LCSWs are able to diagnose across all 50 states from my understanding and considered psychotherapists. LCSWs are specifically trained in social work and mental health whereas LPCs have a different area of focus that I am not too familiar with. I'm so glad to find a psychotherapist with an LCSW. I am half way into my MSW and am having regrets about the degree I chose because I was more interested in psychopathology and psychotherapy. It's nice to see a psychotherapist with a social work degree.

This resonates with me, I want to study psychopathology and psychotherapy as well, I am in my last year of my psych undergrad and I keep hearing my professors saying not to do the MFT/LCC program because they can't diagnose or bill Medicare? And apparently LCSW's can. May I ask what do they have you learning in the MSW program if its not psychopathology and psychotherapy?

@@stanzaschulz4339 There are lots and lots of sociological and policy-based courses that revolve around systems rather than psychodynamics or specific group work for example. I could take two electives and both of them were those I borrowed form the counselling program because I feel so ill prepared for psychotherapeutic work. I may take a couple more classes from the MS in counselling as well

Is becoming an LCSW a viable career goal for someone in their 50's?

Hi Eric- the short answer is: YES! Absolutely! Recently, I went back to school for my PhD in psychology and many of the people in my classes are in their 60s and I have one classmate in his 80s making a complete career change. So yes, I think it is definitely a viable career goal in your 50s. You deserve to explore this career option if you’re interested or passionate about this field. Hi TmFBaBii~ Thank you for watching and your comment. I honestly always search for new social work positions and have job positions emailed to me because it is so important to always explore options. With this particular position, a friend who works in clinic, reached out to me and asked if I was interested.Always network and keep an eye open for positions because you never know when an opportunity may present itself! Is psychotherapy a certification area? Does the exam questions or criteria vary by state?

To become a psychotherapist, you need to be licensed (not just certified). For the LCSW exam, the exam questions are generally the same for every state. Hope this info is helpful.

Can I become a lcsw worker without a degree? Like can I land a job with just a license?

You need to have a Masters degree in Social Work to be eligible to gain a license in any state.

@@MentalHealthwithMelissa I’m sure this is almost impossible but let’s say you worked as someone for your position for 10+ years, could you possibly refer someone without that degree but has experience or helped family and friends through life crisis?

@@Unknown-ju5gpNo. For an LCSW you need an MSW specifically (Master in Social Work) and then complete the steps for licensure in your state (usually registration with supervision of about 3000 post graduate hours and then complete of a law and ethics exam, and a clinical exam, and possibly additional continuing education classes). A referral and work experience would not be accepted in lieu.
