Amazing plot of land you got there, and you are nice and positive people I love that, do you have water on the land? Maybe someone already gave you an advice about it but I will say it any way as I belive you will apreciate in the future, our advice is that maybe you should cover the open spaces of the shed roof, or you will have lot's of wasps nests and other things, maybe spray foam could do the job, just an advice of course, if you any doubts and if we can help, please feel free to ask us, on our channel, good luck with all 😊🙏

The first summer after my husband died, I had first a bees nest, then a wasps nests in the roof lining of his workshop. Taking the ceiling down was a very messy job, but thankfully they did not return last year.

Returning a vessel. empty, to its owner after they had given us food, implied that the food was not appreciated, for whatever reason. That is what mother taught her 9 children. We were migrant farm workers in the heartland of the United States back in the '50s. We were dirt poor, struggling to eke out a living, barely feeding ourselves, yet mama always managed to return something from her kitchen in the "purple bucket" showing her appreciation. Anything you return in the vessel will do, cookies, candy, rice, beans.... etc. I saw mama proudly give a manojo (handful) of lard once. It's all she had. I don't mean this comment as criticism and I hope you don't take it that way. I just wanted to share a Mexican custom of old that I've passed down to my children and grand children. Today, I subscribed to your channel. Wishing you peace. Rodolfo Ruiz-Arce

Get yourself a big steel digger bar to help with getting your holes done in hard ground. You can also get a long auger bit and a small jackhammer as I don't think I have seen anyone there doing what your guys are doing without at least 1 jackhammer most have a smaller one and a bigger 40-60# one. Take the cut grass and make a compost bin with dry grass and green olive shoots mixed with what ever compost you create from your kitchen waste. Keep up the good work there is so much you will need to do but don't try to get everything done at once and take time to relax and enjoy the area and each other.

Loving the vids so far, youve probably been told already but to make digging a bit easier one trick I learned from locals in the far east was to dig as deep as you can and fill up with water and work your way down that way. As soon as it's soaked and disappeared dig and carry on the process. Keep em coming best of luck from Shropshire.

@@theoriginhomestead It works honestly, they didn't use concrete to secure the posts either they used the dirt they dug out filling round the fence post then ramming the dirt down with a piece of 2 x 2 or whatever was to hand similar and it dried like concrete. Take it easy.

Why the far east? Why not check how the local portuguese farmers do it? Better chance of success as the locals' knowledge comes from generations before them and is adapted to the local conditions. Imported techniques won't work here. Same for NO DIG, because... Most compost sold in Portugal is IMPORTED and most of it is PEAT compost which is not sustainable and its producion is destroying the peat soils elsewhere, but nobody here cares... The wise thing to do is to follow the local portuguese methods, which have been used over millenia, and work. Why did nobody think about this first?

If you have doubts about what some native is saying, you can perhaps ask if you can record them and play it here, and I bet many of us will be gladly to translate for you. 🙂 Many of the farmers in the interior have a thick accent so I have some doubts of whether or not google translate will do you any good. But we can. 🙂

Looking good! IMHO very wise to make the tool shed a priority. I think part of the reason I enjoy your channel is you put so much thought into what you do before you do where so many don't. 👍 I don't offer much advice on the internet but if you are going to be digging many post holes in the future you may want to consider a manual auger type digger (despite the one you have looking incredibly new ; ) Your back will thank you. I know I wish I had discovered them when I was much younger. I use a Seymor Midwest but I'm sure there is something similar on your side of the pond. Edit: Laura don't underestimate the value of the support role, the team is greater than the sum of its parts. And never let Dan forget that an army fights on it stomach and the cook is the MOST important role in the army. 😃

Young lady if you are going to wash your hair with the pump sprayer I recommend you bring a bucket of water and a pot. Fill the pot from the bucket and pour over your hair. Wash your hair and take a second pot of water from the bucket and pour to rinse. Best part is now your whole body is wet so you soap up the luffa and wash and then use the sprayer to rinse your whole body and then what ever is left you rinse your hair again. This is called the 2 gallon shower. Enjoy

I wish you the best on your journey. But I have one question and one point. First the question: Where are you from? I ask as I normally can understand most English dialects and accents but, I have to admit, yours defeated me. I had to turn on CC to understand what you were saying.... 😞 And the point: Nobody in a dry climate digs holes in the summer. The ground, due often to clay content, is like digging in concrete. You wait till it rains enough to soften the soil. Which means, you dig usually in the late winter or early spring. Much easier. Also, consider if using hand tools, using a hand auger, not an "American" post hole digger. Actually more efficient. I know. I have dug many holes in clay soils.

When using the strimmer, we call it a weed eater do not cut to low, it gets the roots stuck im the blade grass thicker at the base, it will keep jamming the blade and you more likely to flip small stones up and they can cause quite a sting 😂 been there done that got the T shirt also with the grass being so long it is harder with a strimmer, so don't let your grass get knee high if you can in future.

Great work. We are working towards an off grid life in Tasmania. Unfortunately our area might be a little too wet for olive trees but most other things are ok.

Olives will do alright as long as they aren't standing in water. There are a few commercial groves in northern Tassie, and I've got one growing well here, where it stays soggy-wet in the paddocks most of winter. It's up on a slight rise so better drainage than the rest. Can't say whether it will ever be warm enough for fruit, mind you. Will we even get summer 😂

@@geoffcapper5025 Oh it's good to know the olive trees will grow. Yeah it has been a wet winter that's for sure. 1600mm so far for us up near Wilmot.

Hi...I think that's a plum tree you have there. I lived in England for 6 years but I missed sunny days so much I had to come back to Portugal. But I keep good memories of those years in England. You got a beautiful piece of land which I hope brings you happiness. I can't wait to watch how it wil be transformed... All the best.

A little goat makes a great strimmer. Eco friendly and passive allows you to focus on other tasks. If you can move it to eat in certain areas at a time and follow it up with a few chickens coming along after it , they will all spread manage the land and help put fertility back into the soils for you. Just found your channel, good luck you two!
