@@williamcabell142 As someone who saw "The Song Remains the Same" when it came out in the theater, and had their life utterly change from watching the intro on that version, I will say it still holds up, and that part specifically is amazing, but.. that really wasn't close to their best live performance of the song. And yes, I actually saw them back in the day, and have listened to a ton of bootlegs. The guitar solo on the studio version never was surpassed imo.

@@williamcabell142 Yes, this studio version is perfection. This is the definitive version of the song, the one they spent many hours on in the studio and the one they put on album for their fans to hear for all time. If the live versions of their songs were perfect, they wouldn't have made studio albums, and would have simply recorded their live concerts and put those on album, wouldn't they? In their live concerts they could be freer with their interpretations and improvise more, but those live versions were never better than the studio recordings, by definition.

The tales of their recording tricks were legend, and yet, they still sounded amazing live, without the tricks, or with them, or with different ones. I'm not sure if they were the original jam band, but I suspect at a minimum, they inspired the genre.

@@johngolden5257 He could play a bucket and a smaller bucket, and it would blow us away. But cool to hear your take, as a drummer, I assume. I would have never thought about that, or even been able to hear that and make the association. I'm going to add to my (rim shot) bucket list: a long conversation about drums with a drummer, to see if there is an interesting history, like there is for guitars. Like...some guitars lead to certain music...would be curious what drum things are like that.

It fascinates me that the British Invasion was rooted in American Blues that future Rock and Rollers in America, were largely ignoring. Was it a race thing? Or maybe just where the early recordings were made (Nashville/Memphis/Motown)? Weird that we were not as blown away by the early blues legends, in the way the Brits were. At least, not on a main stream scale.

The version you reacted to, the studio album version, is sheer perfection. It illustrates the magic and genius of Jimmy Page's skills as a music producer (he produced all of the Zeppelin albums). There will be a lot of voices trying to get you to react to their live versions. Some of their live performances were great, some not so much. But none compare to the magic they achieved in the studio. Me personally, I won't even watch someone react to a live version of a Zeppelin song unless I know they've heard the studio recording first. I would highly recommend that you continue to react to their studio recordings. They will touch your soul. Peace

^THIS^ If you want a band from this era that sounds like their records live, check out Rush; even YES does a pretty good job and that's a damn hard thing to do, as complex as their music is. But for sheer studio brilliance, I don't think anyone touches Zep. YES probably comes the closest; they had to bring their recording engineer on the road with them because there were no live sound engineers who had the first clue as to how to make that happen on a live stage. And according to a documentary I saw on the band Queen, YES was the first band to mic every voice, instrument, drum, etc. the way it's commonly done today. (The guys in Queen said they were massively inspired by seeing that.) It's a shame that Zep couldn't have brought a couple of guitarists on tour with them but then, anyone good enough to be able to play with them probably wouldn't want to play second fiddle to anyone else, even the great Jimmy Page.

I've been a major Zep fan from day one. What I've learned from watching people listen to this band has confirmed that what I've felt is very common. You have just experienced the best band this world has ever seen, or as the bass played John Paul Jones said once, "At the time, no other band even came close to how good we were." He wasn't bragging, just stating facts. And yes, my man Jimmy makes you feel like few guitarists can. An intimately subtle and complex song of great skill and craftsmanship. One of a kind.

I have been made to shed tears from them since way back when, as these magnificent songs and albums were released, each one was always a religious experience when hearing it for the first time. Jimmy Page plays with dripping emotion in his blues drenched solos through much of their catalog. All four of those dudes were in the conversation as best at what they did and the band even exceeded the sum of its parts and became for me, and many in my generation, one of the best bands in any genre. For more classic Zeppelin's blues try You Shook Me, Bring It On Home, when the Levee Breaks or Tea for One. You can't go wrong with these or any song by them, they are what classic rock kept striving to attain, an immortality that will see them listened to for centuries to come. Enjoy! Thanks Angela for so brightening my day, take care. 🎵
