it sucks that we as humans can't love our heroes until after they die. Yes, Eddie was well loved, but i distinctly remember hearing everyone bitch and moan about how mean he was to everyone and how he was obnoxious and arrogant and all that bickering u know the story. Now that he's passed, he's our generation's Mozart. He always was a musical genius but too many people just kept criticizing him and now that he's passed that all suddenly stopped.

Was at this concert on this night. Experienced the densely packed crowd and just feet away from MA for the most part, trying my best to stay upright and not get crushed. The only disappointment for me at all was seeing Eddie come out with his hair cut. Even Sammy made a comment about it at the start of the show. Despite that, one of the most awesome shows I experienced.

There are two guitarists who, for me, don't seem to play guitar as much as strap on the instrument as a conduit for something to come through them. Edward and Stevie Ray. There was something happening when these guys played, especially live, and they both knew it and were humble about it. The pure joy in Eddie's playing is something no other player has ever had. At times he even seems surprised and as awed as the audience is at what comes out. We were so damn lucky.

I've said the same. Eddie and stevie ray had alot of the exact same energy. They both had a rawness about their playing. Their souls were layed bare with the guitar being the channel it came out thru. Both had a feel that could not be duplicated by the many that tried and tried to copy them

I think for me what really gets me is the things he was able to do. He was way ahead ahead of his time. I mean when you listen to any Van Halen album really you can help but think how did he come up with this? When I listen to all the iso tracks form the early Van Halen days I get goosebumps because I’m an awe of his playing. It’s so perfect, and I can’t thank him enough for giving evening the greatest music we ever had the privilege to listen to.

While listening to this solo part, keep the 3:11 to 5:00 mark in video imagined in your mind while he's playing the solo part. That 3:11 to 5:00 mark in the video is the blueprint to his playing. The first half of this video defined Eddie Van Halen versus the rest - just riffing and having fun. He went from one of his solos to classical to blues to shredding through Eruption in a matter of minutes and made it all sound like it was meant to be together. This is one of the few times I’ve ever seen him go “off script” and it was pretty awesome. Yes, many people can “play” parts of Eddie’s music, but nobody was able to follow him because they didn’t know where he was going next.

He was really blasted here.......but still managed to play great. It became a different story down the road. Eddie's legend can never be questioned, but even so the booze & drugs cost him a lotta good years after Hagar left. That stretch between '98 and '08 especially just ruined him.

Serious addiction will do that to a person. He was sadly introduced to it all by his "also functioning alcoholic" father at the age of 12, to help reduce his anxiety & stage fears. Ed's shyness & serious anxiety is rarely spoken about, which is a tragedy in itself. It's what kept him drinking long past when it was time to hang it up, then the physical addiction took over in those last 8 yrs & sadly, took him to very dark places. Also rarely spoken about is the fact that he finally conquered his demons, got sober & stayed sober for the last 12 years of his life. I see his sobriety as one of his greatest achievements. His magic is painfully missed. Gone way, way, way too soon. Absolutely heartbreaking.

In the 80s, he could get hammered and still play amazingly. It didn’t catch up with him until 2004. But he rebounded in 2007 and went out on a high note.

@@JohnDoe-gk7ok You don't know what the hell you're talking about. He was already shriveling away when they fired Hagar in '96 and the crappy VH3 in '98 was the product of him completely going off the rails. He allowed that idiot Ray Daniels to mismanage his band by hiring Cherone and totally changed his guitar tone. He was a basket case all the way from '96 until about 2010 or so. Remember, they had to cancel 2007 tour dates to try and get him clean also.
