Here is a DC brushless motor that I built for a project at school. I manufactured all of the components myself using an array of machine tools and equipment.
I know that a lot of common motor design principles have been ignored here, it could certainly be a lot better, but it was built to be reliable and attractive; I think I managed that pretty well!

This engine clearly shows the principle of the brushless motor. it helped me - I could not understand why brushless motors are three wires? Thank you. Now everything is clear. I even translated the text in the translator. I just .... Russian.

Good construction Jon. Could you elaborate a little on the power output of the motor? What would happen if a load is applied and the motor is turned off, do you have to realign the magnets manually?
@JonProce
@JonProce 9 жыл бұрын
The output power is practically negligible. And yes, you need to have a magnet aligned with a pole for it to restart.

Jon Proce Thanks for the previous reply. We're a group of Swedish students tasked with designing and building a motor to lift a half a kilo a meter under a minute and we liked the simplicity of your design and took a little inspiration for our own from it. Did you build your motor with a specific torque in mind?

Jon, I deal with the type of brushless motors that the RC modelers use and I am fascinated by this. Not only because of its immediate sense of simplicity but that there is definitely more going on than meets the eye. We use electronic speed controllers that are programmable thru a simple card type prgrmr and also the firmware can be changed on the Microcontroller to increase the response and resolution. So I take it that the bread board would be home to the mosfet if you had a heat sink on it.

Mega. It shows the main components and principles of a DC brushless motor very clearly and simply. I like simple stuff! I think a guard would be a good idea though: maybe a couple of large PC fan guards like you have on the power supply. There's a lot of spinning energy there, kinda makes me cringe!

Thanks for making it ;) Im currently finishing my RC car. It is a pretty old RC car (Historical i might say), that my brother found in bought house. It was not working and had pretty bizarre system of turning and powering the damn think. So i decided to give it little renovation under the hood. 6 Li-on 18650 cells, that gives around 12V, Arduino in both car and receiver, much stronger motor (A DC motor from drill, or whatever) and servo turning. You wont see the changges from outside, which was my point. But i have to programe it, so it will take some time to make it go... Anyway, when im done, i might give a video of it here, so you might be able to tell my level of mechanical skill. ..... "skill" ;)

Really well-design. Great job! I was wondering that maybe it would be more reliable with an odd number of magnets and a greater number of coils, with a reasonable but even number of poles. That would make it possible for it to spin in both directions.

I made a simular idea but no sensor. It has a one coil and a "detection coil" When the motor induces a current it will continue to run. It is used to drive a pendulum. But can be used to power a rotary motion. Downfall is that my circuit has to be hand started. Because it needs the induction on the detection to get it started. But for a clock that is ok. Made it drive a lego clock with quite good precision for days.
