GREAT Video bro! Another gripe I have with DC's black characters is that there arent enough ORIGINAL ones who arent tied to a mantle. Don't get me wrong, I love John Stewart, Jace Fox, Calvin Ellis, etc, but it really annoys me how DC doesn't put enough of a spotlight on the more original characters like Static (who for some reason hasnt gotten a new series to follow Shadows of Dakota) and they don't take enough risks with creating NEW Black characters. With Marvel, you have Black Panther, Luke Cage, Blade, Blue Marvel, Falcon, Storm, and many more. Most of DC's characters are tied to ANOTHER hero's legacy, and while Im not opposed to that (unlike the racist Comicsgate weirdos), I do think it comes off as lazy when nearly ALL of your minority characters are just different versions of the pre-established characters. And your 100% right in the fact that DC doesn't do enough with giving these characters more of a spotlight, and letting their runs continue, and prosper. Green Lantern: War Journal is PHENOMONAL, and has been well received with everyone who has been reading it. Why is it being canceled? It will never not urk me.

I was so excited for the Static/Milestone universe reboot, the fact that they pushed statics return a fair amount on insta made me think we were getting a lot more but sadly another fumble by DC. On a side note, I did a video on the first like three issues and some of the communities response to his new origin was alarming to say the least.

Technically Calvin Ellis isn't connected to a lineage. He's just an au superman. I do get your point though. If you want some original black characters from dc look at the milestone characters: static, icon, blood syndicate.

I think the big problem DC has is that they only focus on specific minority characters during the two months they're most visible. They practically parade them out as if they're saying "We're not bigots, See?!" while ignoring those same characters the rest of the year. They're more interested in the attention that a character or mantle raceswap gets them than they are really fleshing out some of the fantastic characters that already exist. It's a shame as they're throwing away the chance for new fans to discover them.

This is a much larger conversation, but I cannot stress enough that the reason diverse characters suffer bland, uninteresting, flat stories that no one is ever interested in is because we simply cannot put diverse characters through the necessary meat grinder that great storytelling requires. You cannot beat women within an inch of their life the way you can Superman. You can’t have black characters making really poor moral decisions, suffering regret and repercussions and then allowing them to find a way back to the light. I CANNOT STRESS enough how terrified these conglomerate publishers and movie houses are of putting diverse, LGBTQ and women characters through the meat grinder that straight white males get to travel through on their way to amazing stories. It didn’t used to be the way it is now. They had to literally take down a billboard of Mystique being choked out by Apocalypse. 😂 It’s incredibly sad, but with the exception of some prominent diverse creators, 95% of what’s made cannot allow diverse characters to truly suffer or to take a wicked path.

2:03 Because this Medium is heavily surrounded by Nostalgia, there are many people who their only issue is they do not like the idea of a superhero Mantle being passed down at all, they don't care who the Mantle is passed to. Even white dudes being replaced by other white dudes. They just want more stories about the same character they grew up with. So that feeling is usually the strongest with their favorite character. I'm a bigger Batman fan, than I am a Spider-Man fan, so Peter being replaced by Miles didn't bother me, But Bruce Wayne being replaced by anybody does.

The reason why the diverse characters can't work is because the comic book company DC in general right now has destroyed their continuity So all of these characters some of these characters used to already have a lot of stories that were built in multiple different comic books but now with the continuity being rebooted and them having to start over from scratch a lot of those stories and a lot of those histories are lost to most people and then when they do bring these characters what do they focus on the characters being black replacing the white character talking about how better they are because they're black or diverse or a lot of their stories go on with the fact that the world is racist towards them and people hate black people all of a sudden that's the reason why a lot of the old stories don't work and no you cannot just come together with the whole group of black female superheroes because you need a reason for them to get be together what would bring them together what reasoning will bring them together not just because they're black and it doesn't make sense to have them together just for the hell of it when a lot of those characters live in different parts of the world and in different areas so they really wouldn't meet each other like that in general and the reason with the milestone characters is because they disrespected to history and the law and rebooted them to do something different to the point where everybody gave up on them once they got rebooted it's the same thing with a lot of these diverse black characters or black and the reason with the milestone characters is because they disrespected to history and the law and rebooted them to do something different to the point where everybody gave up on them once they got rebooted it's the same thing with a lot of these diverse black characters or diverse characters in general when you only focus on the fact that they're diverse or when you try to play the whole it's just a mantle it's just a mantle thing most people are rejecting it because a lot of those characters didn't come in naturally a lot of those characters was created so they can be replacements people say that they aren't but most of them were and then if you do things that people don't like with the characters like having them come out of nowhere be better than Batman Superman Wonder Woman yeah you're you're not going to get people on your side you have to go through character development and then if you focus on the surface level features of what they are or their sexuality that turns people off as well You have to have history with these characters these characters have to go through a lot of character development and usually you don't need to put them in solo books all the time You actually need to put them in books that people are going to actually read and then see if they're good enough to break out as a solo character because a lot of characters including the white characters don't have comic books as well and you know they a lot of those characters are good characters too but sometimes not every character can do solo comic books and sometimes you can only get a six issue out of them You sometimes you can only get a eight issue out of them It is what it is but they also have to get good writers to actually want to tell a story with those characters and not surface level features

I was talking to a black friend recently about DC and I felt bad that the best DC has done for the black community was the Static cartoon from the 2000s (and even then, that's a Milestone character). They operate in a short sighted way. They don't put in the work for their black characters. If the minority led books don't sell "well enough" it gets cancelled and we're left with a couple solo issues and maybe the really popular ones show up in team ups. Comics, especially DC, works by building on it's history. If their best black characters only have at best, a volume's worth of stories, that ain't much to build off of.

All these ideas are good, no doubt. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to DC actually putting in the effort of hiring TALENTED and PASSIONATE writers and artists who wanna tell a good story, and not just make garbage to push an agenda. Remember what happened with "I'm Not Starfire"?

Miles is the best example in my opinion of what a black should be. He speaks to people in the neighbourhood he'll help an old woman across the street stuff like that. Like static shock. I always like the episode where his friends dad thinks he's changing his son. I live in England and I'm white but police over here mostly care about your social status. They'll always be racist but I've been stopped multiple time because they think I have a knife. When I was younger a crack addict attacked me and the police didn't show up for 4 hours then I told the police he lives in the house infront of my moms they didn't care and just left. Going to the shop I'm followed around or when I hangout with friends who live in nice areas an their parents think I'm gonna get him killed because of where I live. In the show they forgive the dad because hate brings more hate but they can't create a comic run about him.

Great Video dawg! I ALSO HIGHLY recommend STEEL by Michael Dorn. It too was a Dawn of DC launch title. Severely Underrated. RED HOOD: The Hill is another. It focuses heavily on the Black Community in the Hill and RED HOOD and Batman are just Co-stars. Its written by Shawn Martinbrough. I too hope DC continues trying to push Black Characters, especially since we're on the way to another status quo shift post Absolute Power. This current attempt was solid, despite the runs being short. But I am happy that instead of ongoing stories getting cut short due to low sales, we're getting complete tales that have the potential to continue later down the line. I think fans can also be better about supporting said books and DC needs to do a better job promoting these books to Black characters to Black folk. Man i could go on and on about this but I wont. They really don't use these characters enough, they just exist, and some of them just seem to be there to fill out the league, or whatever team. They aquire or invent these characters and do nothing. I can't see too much hope for them, DC cam barely keep a show going, especially a Justice League show, I'm surprised some of the Arrowverse shows lasted as long as they did. It seems that sticking with the mains aren't really helping the comics, and I feel like they're exhausting Batman, like they're doing to him what marvel has been doing with Spider-Man. Niether gets any peace. I've actually been working on laying out some DC fan fiction with some original characters, and two hardly ever used characters, that takes place in hardly used cities. You've got me considering putting some of these characters in them. Mr. Terrific is going to be in one of them.

I stopped reading comics around DKM or Final crisis where the JL "died" im gonna be yappi g about a few thi gs but hear me out. I always dislike it when characters are race swapped because the lack of diversity and potential. How many potential characters we have that are still on the shelf collecting dust and even when they create characters they're not breaking through obscurity because of their golden geese such as Batman, Harley quinn and other popular characters. Theres a character named Naomi who was a recent new character 2-3 years ago and she instantly got her own show despite being fairly new until it flopped. iDK what she's doimg now though in comics? Personally I believe they say they care about diversity until otherwise. Not all but most of them aren't authentic when it comes the creating/developing diverse characters making it feel like they're doing it for brownie point by pandering only when it's convinet. We can have multiple movies/adaptations of Batman, superman, JL, Suicide squad, Teen titans but we cant get any other black super heroes like static shock and black lightning. I wanna see other milestone characters but we know they aint gonna do jack the most they can do is have rocket in young justice and mention Icon's name. Wonder woman who is part of the trinity still doesnt have her own show yet Harley quinn can her own. (DC super hero girls dont count) im surprised she manage to get 2 animated films. I love cyborg but i feel like when im watching/reading justice league hes either a plot device or just in the background telling characters whats going on and what they need to do. I want to be interested in signial but similar to cyborg he's a background character except i hardly see him do anything significant or some type of role that stands out. At the end of the day they care about money and what sells it doesnt matter what character we want to see if they aint as popular as Batman, sups, harley quinn, teen titains, they're gonna remain on the shelf until they get picked out for a team full of white characters

Bruce Wayne in my opinion is a white man not just because the comics made him that way but in general. His Parents are large political figures in Gotham and one of the Richest people in comics, The life they live would of been a historically white life with all due respect so i feel like making that into a black man would be awesome but would kind of change the wayne families dynamic because inheritely they would have to deal with systematic problems that would hinder them being as rich as they are. Winston Duke would make an awesome Azreal or even Black Lightning but I think making him bruce wayne would be a disservice and would open a whole different type of racism LMFAO.

Here’s a few issues, as a black man, I’ve acknowledged with black characters in comics. 1. Too many of these black characters are sabotaged by being legacy characters… especially when there’s so many other better candidates. You’re telling me that in Future State Batman, you rather give the Batman mantle to a whole ass unknown rather than one of the already pre established Batfamily characters or even Terry McGinnis since this is a whole new era based in the future? You’re literally setting this character up for failure! Compare that Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle, a legacy character who’s his own character with his own fresh lore and iconic events. He’s honestly his own mythos compared to the other Blue Beetles! Black characters need to be given their own legacies, rather than carrying that of someone else’s. 2. This is gonna be a controversial opinion, but alot of black writers… don’t know how to write black characters… without getting boringly political. Im sorry, but it’s true. When black writers approach these characters, they feel an obligation of sorts to say something political with them. This could be fine, but the issue is that they don’t juxtapose it with something actually creative or fun. The X-men is the most political series out there, but it has the most iconic comic book events such as Days of Future Past and Dark Pheonix. I love Static and Milestone, but those comics were never really able to balance their political messaging with fun storytelling in my opinion.

Diversity has become code for segregation. How many Straight male writers who are not white have been hired by Marvel or DC? They've shouted diversity, but they don't hire straight males, you know the people who buy and read the comics. On top of that fans have been asking for more original black characters, but instead of Marvel and DC listening, we got Miles Morales. Hes just Peter Parker but Black. We have Batwing... Who cares about Batwing? We have Duke Thomas... Who's Duke Thomas? A wannabe Batman sidekick. I think the problem is a lack of diversity. Because most of these modern writers have the same ideas, tell the same ol stories and worse they inject modern day politics in our comics... Why is Donald Trump in my comic books? Why is are my favorite characters protesting in the streets instead of fighting villains? Maybe skin color isn't as important as good storytelling. Also it's really sad how people are treating Miles Morales compared to Static Shock. Virgil Hawkings is an Original black character. He should have another animated show, he should have a movie, he should be featured and respected more he's an original black character, but he's treated like he's expendable. Miles Morales however is getting the A List treatment despite him being so uninspiring. It's just weird how the Original character is side lined for a carbon copy. And I know Marvel and DC are two different companies, but the fact that Miles is the poster boy for representation shows how little Representation really matter.

crazy comment LMFAO. This video has nothing to do with white straight men getting hired. Also what would a white straight male know about the black experience. I showed you in the video that i'm reading the comics so do you think i'm just the only black person who does or do we wanna use our brains and see that others are like me. Miles Morales isnt a great example of Diversity and ill give you credit that no way in hell should he be the poster boy of diversity and that wasn't what my argument was LMFAO. I literally said in the video that Miles is so big because he is next to the biggest Superhero on the planet. Who cares about batwing? no one because he's not an interesting character but lucky for you he was created by 4 white men. Comics have always been political there is a green lantern book where he is telling green lantern about political issues on earth. It didn't start with black heroes so you can shut that down. also I LITERALLY SAY IN THE VIDEO HOW IMPORTANT STATIC IS but somehow u missed it and wanted to cry in the comments. also i respect your opinion on miles but you are drunk if you think he's not one of the most influential and relatable characters in comics. Watch the video as many times as it takes for u to understand bro

"they inject modern day politics in our comics..." Modern day politics have always been in comics. It's just that their politics aren't modern nowadays. "Why is Donald Trump in my comic books?" Why was JFK in comic books? Or Dwight D. Eisenhower? Or Nixon?

I knew about the black characters getting electricity powers, I didn't realize there is a "The Latino gets fire powers" trope. Just curious, how many can you list? Latinos are so underrepresented that I can't even think of any other than Blue beetle.
