When DCC has a problem, it's a lot more complicated than just checking the wires. After resetting the layouts three AR1s, resetting the boosters to try and align the phases, and checking foot after foot of wire, it turns out what I thought was a short circuit was actually a circuit overload caused by a malfunctioning decoder.

Thanks for the information good to know. I have working on wiring the last two days just about finished. My first wiring job so I have been taking my time. So know i know there can be other problems other than wiring. Thanks for sharing. Have a good day.

wiring is always a pain. Test and test often! that's my advice. but yes, things still go goofy even when it's all done right.

Glad you isolated it down to that one Decoder. Headaches.

Such headaches. DCC is great, but its problems are so much more than DC. That decoder find was a true accident, but now i know what to look for!

I have had nothing but trouble with Digitrax decoders. A couple of engines I have were running around the layout in a consist with other engines.. the 2 that had Digitrax decoders all of a sudden decided that they wanted to change direction and run the opposite way while the other engines were still running forward. That's just 1 problem I've had. I now primarily use TCS decoders and have no issues at all. In saying that, I do make sure that my engines are serviced and keep a record of when they get done.

personally i like my digitrax stuff; it's fairly reliable. i will say that every decoder issue i've had, however, is in a digitrax unit. although the decoders in the BLI models are probably my most wonky. TCS and ESU i've had no issues with - digitrax just makes it so easy to find the right drop-in for the older locos i converted.

The best thing for that problem is to keep the locos you are using on track that you can shut the power off to. I've had no problems since I've been doing that. Everything decoder in my units are Digitrax. Bob

i do like digitrax for the non-sound decoders. i've had one forget it's address and this one go AWOL. i'm sure the issue is at some point a surge happened on the line and the decoder just happened to be unfortunate enough to take a hit - it's usually a user error. i have certain areas where power is cut by power routing turnouts, but when i'm done for the day, i typically just park everything on the main. i think to go back to re-isolate the blocks like it was back in the DC days would be a disaster.

If you used DecoderPro, it would have been interesting to see what CVs no longer matched what you had saved to your roster file for that loco.

never got into DecoderPro or JMRI - but i see a lot of folks using them. my command station makes it so easy to program, i haven't needed to venture out into other stuff. to be fair, i've not really programmed anything crazy - very simple speed matching and consisting has been about it. at some point, i need to get into the computer based stuff - it looks like it makes complicated programming uncomplicated.

@@AlleghenyNorthern I had actually wrote my own CV management software, but when I discovered DecoderPro, I immediately switched to it because of its superior user interface. The fact that it's free and will run on most hardware that runs Java makes it very attractive. This side of computers in model railroading is almost like air brushes and painting hoods. Some folks just don't want that. But with the increasing complexity of today's modern decoders and the proliferation of computer hardware, it is a natural.
