DISASTER STRIKES: HOW TO FIND A SHORT CIRCUIT ON A MODEL RAILWAY.
I never really intended to make this video, but after recording the first part for the update of the extension, I thought it may just be helpful to someone going through the same thing. Model railways are huge fun, no deny, but as they get bigger and more complex the chances of something going wrong grow dramatically and when it happens it incredibly frustrating, but a calm logical approach is needed. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE regardless of who we are. shorts are no respecter of people.
So I show the procedure I went through. Hope it’s helpful.

I always say... I never have problems, just solutions to problems. Well done for finding it John, at least you fixed it. I can understand you’re disappointment at having the issue but hats off...sorted now, well done again. I take it the decoder was and is still ok? Run some trains to make it all worth it mate and thanks for posting, it could happen to us all!! Cheers, Chris

Wheezy Palace N gauge Thanks Chris, sadly shorts are part of model railways, but firmly believe its how you handle it that matters. Ie attitude, calm and logical approach. No rest though lol, keen to work on the mock device moving trains to lower level. Lol no clues there ha ha

Very helpful! I'm trying to locate a short that has brought my layout to a halt. You definitely reassured me that the process I am using to find it is going in the right direction. I also had a brainstorm while watching that I could employ terminal strips to good effect even though I have a small layout (3 ft. x 6ft 8 inches) with only one power district. I like your straightforward presentation. It really helps to understand what you are showing us.

Thank you for your kind words, and so glad it was helpful. Shorts are really annoying and very frustrating. After you ruled out any coaches, wagons, locos. and removed everything try disconnecting things one item at a time and test. It is a long laborious process Im afraid but slow and steady wins the race

I am indeed doing just that. I have narrowed it down to about a 3 foot section of track and am hopeful my next "serious" search will have positive results. @@piccadillymodelrailways

Thank you John for showing us the "warts and all" of running a model railway. From the highs to the lows, from disaster to elation. I have saved your video because, as you said if I have a similar issue then your recording could help me in my time of need. So thank you for sticking with it and being supportive to the community of model railroad hobbyists. Cheers, Mike

Hi John - been there myself - it's a pain trying to find where the short actually is. For Blackwood I disconnect the D connectors between each of the four boards and then reconnect one at a time to narrow down the problem to a small area. Sounds as though you've done the same. Main thing is you've resolved the issue. Euan

My heart bleeds for you John with all that wiring, but so glad you have now sorted it out. To be honest, I wouldn't know where to start if I had as much wiring as you have. As far as electrics are concerned, I am hopeless and that was one reason for keeping my layout wiring pretty simple, with the minimum amount of points and crossovers. I just have three train running tracks, two tram tracks and eventually a separate train branch line, all controlled independently from just three twin track and one single track controller. Cheers Geoff

TRAM JUCTION MODEL RAILWAY thanks Geoff, Im so relieved it now works again. You grow in confidence where wiring is concerned. However I fully understand keeping it simple. It starts with point motors then powering frogs, then lighting is required so on an so on. A year down the line you look again and suddenly you realise wiring has has grown and developed. When you install it, you understand it.

Hi John. What a nightmare when you get a short it can sometimes take days to try and sort it. I am glad you seem to have got to the bottom of it, I could almost feel the frustration in your voice this hobby can get you so annoyed with your self at times. I only have a small 00 layout so I have kept it to D.C. but at some stage I hope to change it to D.C.C. that when I will need help from people and there are plenty on you tube. Hope everything goes O.K. for you John. Regards George...

George Wyatt yes Thanks George you are so right, the hobby can be very annoying at times. 3 days to find this short, but hopefully all fixed. Time will tell. DCC is amazing, but it does bring its complications, but as you said there are loads of us happy to help, just ask. Do be aware it’s quite expensive, not only for the controller but decoders for every loco. You cannot run analogue locos on DCC, as the AC voltage will burn out the motor without a decoder. Thanks for commenting George.

Hi John. Thanks for your reply and for the info yes I do relies you can't run D.C.C. on analogue. If and when I get round to changing over I my hold you to your word and call on your help. So thanks again John you are a gentleman. Regards George......
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 4 жыл бұрын
George Wyatt Yes do George, happy to help. Please forgive me, you CAN run DCC locos on analogue as recent decoders are set up to run. However you CANNOT run analogue on DCC. Forgive me if that’s being pedantic but quite important. The hornby select claims to use address 0 for analogue locos, best not to. Hornby will not reimburse if it goes wrong.

I gave up with frog juicers and my Z21, it seemed sometimes they would work ok, other times the Z21 would see a ‘short’ before the juicer had a chance to switch polarity. Ended up using the point motors to switch and problem was solved.

timsytanker sounds good. Glad you found an answer for you. Think some products work well for us whilst others prove to be a nightmare. TBH for me its those DCC Concepts decoders which cause endless issues. Gratefully the gaugemaster frog juicers work well on the whole.

Paul Wilson Paul Wilson what are you like????? Lol Piccadilly has developed over the past year, and has got more complex along the way. Your layout need not get complicated. Unless you really want DCC, stick with DC, and keep things simple. When you are more confident you can add to it. A model railway is what you make it.

Hi john, such a shame you this mega problem. Just watched another stream a few days ago and had a problem with shorts on the dcc concepts point controllers, he phoned them and they know sometimes there is a problem with the built in cud drawing too much current when initially charging up. They sent him a special board to fit to slow the rate of charging down and that cured the problem. Hope that helps you.

Alex Savins ok thanks Alex, I might give them a ring. However, TBH, as soon as I can afford to change them I will, with failing decoders, difficulty in programming and now this short, I’m fast loosing patience with this product. Thank you so much for the comment Alex

Hi John- Thanks for the upload and must say that the electrics side of the build is the bit that worries me most , who said DCC is just 2 wires and off you go? !!!! I am thinking of going the terminal connector way and splitting my layout into 3 sections ( 3 mini bus's) therefore if you get a short the can narrow it down to 1 of 3 . Also thinking of using terminal blocks for the droppers with the connection from Hornby or Pecos already connected fishplates so any issue you can easily replace it. I am also thinking of using Cobalt point motors with the Aplha control box might be more expensive but seems more straight forward. I have made some changes to the Track plan and have printed it out in 1 to 1 scale and will shortly upload a video so if you have the time can you have a look and see what you think - Cheers Kevin

Medway Peninsula Model Railway yes thanks Kevin. Yes you are so right by dividing the layout and cutting the tracks above. Im still learning as I go on. Did see your last video, think I did comment too. A layout can be as simple or complex as you want according to knowledge and confidence. Both grow dramatically over time. Ive been back in the hobby for 3 years now after 40 year gap. We all start somewhere, and we puck buts up as we go along. I just watch others.

Hi John Enjoyed your video Life is not always plain sailing, sometimes it goes wrong! - Have you considered sectors - learnt this from Greg at fishplate films - and found that DCC Concepts do a four sector short module thingy. Could possibly help and identify at least which sector of the layout is causing agg’ I intend to put one in because as you say as the layout gets bigger.... so does the complexity! Thanks trevor

Hi John, Well done for showing this it not always plain sailing is it even on my tiny layout I had one when I bought a point at a train fair and it had a dead short in the frog area and as it was the first time Railmaster had not started on me its very worrying, but as you say just work through the fault is there somewhere. Glad its all running now and looking forward to seeing this transfer section up from fiddle yard. Cheers Robert.
