I feel like localizing DD2 would have been better, but I'm sure there is some reason they went with DDA. I don't have any interest in playing DDA with a worse progression system, but I hope that it's a good revenue stream for the company.

Augi said they wanted to do DD2 but the old engine state would not be compatible.

Just the name of another Dungeon Defenders game. There has been the OG, DD Eternity, DD2, DD Going Rogue and DD Awakened!

The small bit of story in DDA kind of sort of gives us a sort of clue of why it's awakened.
