Which class is the best controller in Dungeons & Dragons? For my money, it's the Sorcerer *if you build for it*. Here's why :).

I play a practically full support Bard in my Sunday game, and I felt the complaint about the Control Freak Wizard in my soul. I have some other things to do, but yeah it really does just often feel like I toss out my big buff or debuff spell, maybe do some bardic inspiration, and dodge out of the way a bunch being a nuisance, but a lot of the time I'm just like "Dang I wish I could nuke someone."

A couple of level 2 spells a sorcerer shouldn't sleep on are mirror image (1hr no concentration) and wither and bloom. We're not here for w&b's meager damage, but instead the way it heals. Pair that with a bloodwell vial and a pariapt of wound closure... you can now deal a bit of area necrotic damage, get some decent heals, and regain 5 sorcery points!

I find it really hard to formulate Sorcerer / Wizard builds because you want the powerful, high level spells like Wall of Force but multiclassing stunts your spell progression. To me, making a control sorcerer is always a matter of multiclassing a Divine Soul Sorcerer (for Spirit Guardians) with Warlock for Eldritch Blast so I can Quicken a spell and still have a powerful control option that can even potentially interact with the spell I quickened.

I actually played a wizard with a sorcerer dip in the first ever long term game I ever played. They were a chronurgy wizard, with a level of divine soul for story reasons. A lot of my party thought it was a bad idea, but it actually worked pretty well cause I took a bunch of low level utility spells that I already had in my book to free up my prepared wizard spells for more high level spells

13 charisma is a bit out of the way, but nothing terrible. 2 must have defensive spells mean you have spared 2 preps, and you get a subclass on top of that all. For just 1 level. Oh yeah, its good

I've played a similar variant substituting the wizard levels for undead warlock levels. You still maintain single target control via fear applications. Investing two more third level gives you investment of the chain master, letting you spread hour duration poison and unconscious. Twined PFEAG is very underrated as it has no natural up cast. You pick yourself and whoever is front lining the threat. It is more campaign dependent, but it's huge when it happens.

BG3 is my first hands on experience with DnD, and as such i felt completely overwhelmed by the complexity of the possible builds (spent over an hour in character creation just reading stuff), their synergies, hell, even the basics of how the rolls work (spells having different saving throws, what stat scales what abilities, how AC works, Proficiencies; the list goes on). It felt daunting to tackle tbh. I've now seen a handful of your videos, and while i haven't copied any of the (very tempting) builds you've come up with, just exploring the possibilities here has helped me immensly in understanding how to build something that is both extremely fun for me to play, and also actually somewhat competent at what i'm trying to achieve with it. So thank you, awesome stuff all around!

@antdueler 8 ай бұрын
Keep in mind though that invocations will allow warlocks to use Eldritch Blast to move enemies around and slow them, giving you a lot of control over enemy positioning. So while you may only get off a few leveled control spells, you can keep pushing enemies back into those spells so you can get good mileage out of them

I know purpose of the build is to be primary sorc and secondary wizard, but i think there is something to be said about the reverse too. If you take only two sorc levels for font of magic and then a metamagic adept feat, and finish the rest wizard you can get most of the the benefits. Upsides is its less MAD since you don't need int and car (if you take sorc spells that just work) and get the whole wonderful wizard spell list, but also lose out on the big pool or sorc points but you can still do point conversion thanks to font of magic. Also just the idea of quickened split enchantment mind whips makes me happy :) All in all great build

Hi Colby and team, I haven't typed in a while because there is now a little Delibaby learning the ways of the world! I just wanted to say 2 things: 1, your videos are fantastic for calm babies as you have a soothing voice and no surprising moments 2, I recently made a sorcerer build that utilised the net. The idea behind the build being to use an action to cast delayed fireball and quickening mind sliver on turn 1 Then on turn 2 you throw the net to restrain the enemy and quicken regular fireball while also dropping concentration on DFB for minimum 21d6 damage hehehe If you grab at least 1 level of fighter or hexblade at level 1, that'll be how you get your martial weapon proficiency, probably Also 2 levels of evocation wizard so you dont hit yourself

Having a higher level spell slot but not the higher level spell to use it on is actually a boon as a controller since many many many super fantastic spells let you hit two targets by upcasting it, you could also use it on something like armor of agathys which combines wonderfully with bastion of law which protects your health and your concentration by eating the damage and reflecting it back to enemies, potentially scaring them off from attacking you

I humbly request an optimized build for another sorcerer. This time, on a mount. Namely, the aberrant mind sorcerer. But the catch is: on this particular build, get to lvl 7, grab an exotic saddle, conjure aberration yourself a beholder and ride it into battle! Majestically, that is. Mechanically speaking, it does have 16 Strength and is a medium sized creature. Small race, right conjuration of the "beholderkin" option and you're good to go. Try to optimize for having it active for a long time, holding concentration, and not falling off. Artificer, maybe (infusions)?

If you didnt care as much about higher level spells, you could go bard 6 for either lore or glamour, for either magical secrets or minute long bonus action command.

I was just pondering over a character like this the other say. I think I'm going to enjoy this video.

Mountain Dwarf is probably my favorite sorcerer race for the free medium armor prof. If you're OK with delaying fey touched to lvl4 and capping CHA at Sorc 8, you'll get some more survival.

my favorite thing about these builds is that sometimes we get to roll our stats, so being Mad isnt to bad

I know I already commented on this video, but I have to say something else, I discovered recently that casting Tasha's hideous laughter on a swimming opponent is an instant kill if they're con mod is 0... I love this build.
