De-Americanization comes as a great cost to us all.
I was born and raised in Northern California. My father’s family and my mother’s family, both from Mexico, emigrated to the U.S. during the Bracero guest worker program. I am the eldest of four children and the first person in my family to have graduated from college earning a B.A. (cum laude) and an M.A. from California State University, Chico. I earned my Ph.D. in political science from Washington State University under the supervision of Professor Nicholas P. Lovrich. I am currently an Associate Professor of Political Science at Pacific Lutheran University specializing in American government, public policy, and race and politics. I am the author of Everyday Injustice: Latino Professionals and Racism (Rowman and Littlefield, Inc. 2011) and co-author of a new book Living the Dream-New Immigration Policies and The Experiences of Undocumented Latino Youth.

Maria your statement is valid. If I was a Hispanic youth that learned that I came here illegally because of my parents who also came here illegally, I would try to get my papers or get a good immigration lawyer to work my way up to be a naturalized US citizen just the haters can keep their mouths shut.

I am that Hispanic youth and I’ve been trying to get my citizenship on my own for a while now but I’ve had no luck. I’m 19 and I’m working as a waitress. In addition I’m also a college student paying my tuition 100% out of pocket because of issues with my tasfa. How do you suppose I pay for a good lawyer when I have to pay my car, rent, food, utilities and other basic needs on a job that pays under minimum wage.

One Humanity, I usual don't comment. Although when I read definition of citizen. I had to say that I am a citizen of the United States and I reside in the American Continent. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands or million Mexicans that came to work in the US as braceros. This was Mexico contribution to the WW ll effort as requested by President Roosevelt a program that started in 1942 and end in 1964. It was suppose to end when the World conflict was over. Although, when the G.I.'s return they did not go back to the farm, factories, docks etc. They went to college. The US found it self in a deficient of a labor force so the program continued. How many generation of Mexican contribute to the economic, physical construction, social and religious values that kept the US and continues to keep it at the forefront of the world.

Ms Chavez says that i in 5 Americans identify as "Latino" but, what she misses, is that 5 out of 5 Americans identify as American. This kind of classism has to stop

Thank you for having the courage to step up to the plate and be very public about your stance on this HOT topic. The American right wing is using these youth, as it is using Blacks and the poor, as a punching bag and a scape goat for the impacts of THEIR legislative failures and THEIR agenda to foment division, confusion, and hate for their own gain and power.

Sorry, lady. Illegals come in all colors, including white. Children who came illegally have no one to blame, but their parents.

All we want is an opportunity to stay and contribute to America. A lot of us are educated and hardworking having a lot to offer. Many of us are not asking for anything for free we’re just asking for an opportunity to prove that we are good enough
