Back in the the days when the Áras was a glorified retirement home. By that stage de Valera could not see the nose on his face.

His constitution of 1937 reflected was a bigot. He gave the Catholic church a special place and sent it to for approval by the Church before putting it into law When he put a territorial claim to the six counties how then could he have expected the protestants in the north to have joined the Irish free state .Dev was an obstacle to Irish unity.

Thats your opinion " it differs from the irish people who freely elected Eamon on lots of occasions for high office In the irish Republic of Ireland ☘ which allowed all faiths to practice freely ' in ireland ' the irish people loved de valera As all the older people I knew in Dublin in 1950s told me in working class areas I remember seeing De valera In our area canvassing too ' its easy for you to make a comment with no facts to prove your point just hearsay If you weren't there you don't know Eamon De Valera was a good irish man ☘ your names can't hurt him now '

@@patdoyle3686 he didn't say De Valera wasn't popular. He said he gave the Catholic Church too much of a role in the state and this deterred NI protestants from joining the south. Hardly a controversial point...

He was only 8 years older than Collins - Look I hated the horrible old man I remember from my youth , but Had Collins Lived I suspect he would have been as bad. They were both Terrorist bigots in truth , just early violent death means not having to live to show it was always all about you !

@@5888max they were not terrorists, have some respect for the people who died for your freedom. From studying Michael Collins I’m sure he would of been a different type of leader. Both men were different in personalities and direction. Whatever dev has done he did it for the good of Ireland but that good was lost along the way.

@@KC-cf5mg I don't agree that they were freedom fighters and , I suppose you might be right that collins would have been a different sort of leader , but you can't know if he would have been any better . What would nave been for the better good of Ireland would have been to pursue political objectives through the democratic process That would have avoided a a civil war ,partition , 70 odd years of economic backwardness and second terrorist campaign whatever these thugs thought they were doing that was the result , lets hope the lesson has finally been learnt

@@5888max I agree but you can’t “suspect” he’d be a bad leader. Have you not read your Irish history? We tried to represent the cause in the House of Parliament but anytime an Irish representative spoke he was jeered and silenced, so what were the like of Collins and dev to do? Just let the feet of unionists and foreign rule walk all over us? Collins aim was to get the gun out of Irish politics. You need to read your history before commenting. These brave men were hero’s and died for what they believed was right and along with a high majority of the nation post 1916 executions. Freedom fighters, have some respect
