The unknown made me realize how badly I want more original content

The way that BHVR hat teased The Unknown before revealing them was absolutely peak! They went out of their way and wrote pieces of media that, if written in the early 2010s, would have been *insanely* popular creepypastas, and I was lapping up every sweet little drop of it.

Feel like the biggest problem with licensed chapters is their perks. The shrine of secrets needs a rework to include a constant rotation of 4 perks from licensed chapters only.

Came for Demo, stayed for Slinger. Came back for Wesker, stayed for Larry.

I think it's great they have all been licenses recently, heres why: it gives them time behind the scenes to work on better original content for down the line, In my opinion.

Tbh, I think the bigger problem is how they rush the licenses, and don’t give enough time to enjoy them/hype them up. Alien being a perfect example. I have no clue why, but I have a feeling that after xenos nerf, everyone has forgotten that ONE OF THE MOST REQUESTED CHAPTERS, was so easily forgotten. And recently, given how Lara Croft had absolutely no hype for her release, felt so dead and boring. I never personally played any of the Lara Croft games, but there was practically no hype for the reveal. It was pretty bland and kinda boring. I just hope that they could make any form of teasers, or to implement how the characters are meant to be felt.

I know I ain't complaining about licenses, I love them more than the original chapters, the Skull Merchant made me think so low of original content lol

I feel that since Tools of Torment, the devs have been aiming more for license. That chapter, especially the killer got so much hate, everyone expected it to be Predator, which would’ve made it license if he was the main idea, and when everyone got disappointed they probably just tried thinking of every license they could get their hands on. But overall I do agree that original chapters can be very great!

the biggest problem i have with licenses is that eventually a big part of the content of DbD is going to be licensed, meaning it will be behind a paywall. A paywall in a game that is already behind a paywall.

The Unknown was one of the best killers they’ve ever made. But it’s a shame that original characters seem to be more few and far between. They’re eventually gonna run out of the big heavy-hitting licenses and rushing them out like this is only gonna make the inevitable happen faster.

I mean it’s all so subjective. Personally, I love Alien and despised End Transmission. Singularity is bottom 3 killers for me to face and play as and Toba to me is really ugly, while I really enjoy Nostromo. This game has been going so much longer than I think even BHVR expected, I’m just locked in for the ride at this point and will give every chapter a fair shake whether it’s original or licensed

I think the devs are just afraid to give a power to their original killers that would fit the licenced killer better, they are in constant uncertainty which power would fit more the licence or original character so thats why they keep blasting licences, remeber that they are years ahead if it comes to know what licences are gonna be in the game

All Things Wicked is a great sign that DBD's originality is anything but spent. But I am torn on all the paragraphs we've gotten because it feels like BHVR isn't trying as hard with quantity because players will buy an iconic face regardless. But this could also be a good thing because less content means more focus on balance. People were more excited for Billy's second rework than they were for Alan for instance. However, the devs should probably stick with licensed anniversaries because they did Haddie and Gabe dirty. Thank you for the video. ❤

We’ve definitely had quite a few licensed chapters/ paragraphs this year. It’s great for short term growth, but I do wonder about gamer retention as well as what BHVR will do when they’ve exhausted most of the good licenses. They need to begin investing in their own content before that happens, I think.

Totally agree, and for some reason, it feels exhausting we have way too many perks too most of them aren't even used.. I get tired of getting a new licensed chapter every 3 months it gets repetitive like the game itself, and we don't really see "new powers" it's the same in some way or another

Hot take but Forged in Fog is one of my favourite chapters in the game. Love both Knight and Vitorrio and I liked the borgo with the red atmosphere.

In all honesty, original chapters allow bhvr to do something with their imagination, without having to follow the licensed character characteristics. The other day i saw a person saying "The game is adding way too many licenses, this is what dying games are doing" and i didnt agree with that in the slightest. Dead by daylight is 33rd most played game on steam which is far from dead, taken also into considiration that there are epic games players, xbox and playstation. Also Dbd's initial idea was to become the "Museum of horror" and they are going in the very right direction. I know some of the recent chapters are not horror related but maybe its good for the game i suppose? Like Lara is the definition of survivor, Vecna's trial presence can be quite Terrifying and nicolas cage is nicolas cage. Albert Wesker is also not a horror character but i think he fits in the game well. Its good to have the original content, especially after we saw what they did with unknown but if their idea was to be the Hall of fame of horror, they are doing the right thing.

I think part of the reason that they do lots of lisence is because the negative feedback some of the original chapters get. While their OG chapters are usually awesome their have been some very negative feedback when they do OG chapters l, skull merchant, dredge, knight, twins, trickster, while not all of them were bad their was a lot of negative feedback and no licenced chapter had ever done nearly as bad to receive so much backlash, so while yes they do nail a lot of OG chapters I think that they also have to keep in mind that those chapters can be received more negatively while licenses usually are not. Tbh we are part of the problem.

I love licensed chapters, but I also love the original chapters. The years where the licensed and original stuff are balanced out evenly like year 4 it leads to really good punches with the licensed stuff, and just as good punches with the original stuff. They definitely should still go for licenses, but they need to balance it out as well, there’s a reason why a lot of people love the All Things Wicked Chapter, it’s because of the originality (also the teasers were A+ as well)

I feel like they just add so many so quickly, and they get burried and forgotten as they continue. It's more exciting when it's a full package killer, survivor, and map. They also need to try to at least make 1 useful perk for both killer/ survivor builds. They release these killers/survivor's with the worst perks. No one ever uses them or the character.

Speaking from a purely survivor point of view, original chapters need to fill a niche since they can't compete with popular licensed chapters that have characters we are already attached too. You see a lot of Sables because she fills that goth girl niche. Mikaela's because people like boons, witches, or red heads with curly hair. Kates because she fills that country girl niche with the country cosmetics. Aces because he is quiet in chase. Looking at Gabriel, while he has a cool backstory, he doesn't really bring anything new to the table niche wise, especially against a huge cast of characters to pick from. Hear me out! What if Gabriel had lost a limb or two when the Singularity attacked? As the Singularity had to acquire organic parts to survive, Gabriel would need to build and integrate robotic limbs and parts to stay alive. This would not only be poetic but would give us a cyborg survivor, filling a niche we do not have.

so glad someone else agrees that end transmission is a severely underrated banger. gabriel is so cool to me and the whole aesthetic of the chapter was amazing, and after knight and skull merchant (i love knight but community doesn't) it was a breath of fresh air for the community. i came into dbd almost exactly after knight released, so my first experience was just surrounded by negativety and doubt and unrest. end transmission was just a great tine for me

Honestly I had this opinion too, was kinda getting sick of license bloat around the time of alien, but after getting my dream chapter (Vecna, and the doors he opened for a potential d&d chapter 2 please gimme a mindflayer killer ty) I look at licenses a bit more like "well this could be somebody's dream chapter, so it's fine if I don't really care for it much"

I like to alternate between David and Gabriel, but Gabriel's cosmetics are just not good so I reluctantly have to main shirtless David.

I've started thinking this exact same thing recently. I recently came back from a 12-16 month break, and just looking at the new characters added I realized that I couldn't care less about the licensed characters. Sure it was fun to look and say that Nicolas Cage being in the game was funny, but after that novelty wore off I was just left thinking about how they're just boring characters with a face I recognize. But nearly every original character, which to be honest there wasn't a lot of, was incredibly interesting. Coming back to Dredge, Singularity, Unknown, and even the Knight (Plus the Lich since he's more original than licensed) was just so exiting I actually got back into the game. And the worst part is now I only go against the free killers, or the past few licensed characters. I've gotten about 30 hours in the past few weeks and I've seen two Knights, one Singularity, and not a single Dredge or Unkown. But I can't go 3 matches without a Xenomorph who's one of the least (subjectively) fun killers to go against.

There are plenty of licenses I want to see in DBD, however I enjoy a ton of their original Killers. Sure some don't hit (skull merchant), but the ones that do hit hit hard and become a Killer I want to learn and play more with. I really hope they do a year of original chapters, but I get why they won't

I think after Castlevania, they should go back to original. They did SO well with All Things Wicked, I hope they can keep that up. Tomb Raider was a dream collab for me (like literally did not expect it to actually happen) & my next dream collab would be Fatal Frame, but I honestly would just love more original content bc some of my favorite Killers are original. I hope they reevaluate some of their original Killer design philosophy and just make them fun to play and go against with good lore like The Unknown!

While I enjoy a lot of licenses, especially a nightmare on elm street back when it launched, I must admit I always LOVED the OG chapters and the OG BHVR content because most of them (looking at you failure merchant) are almost better than the licenses. Unknown or blight for example are peak horror for me, they were just so great that I rather play unknown or blight over pinhead (which is weird since I'm a massive hellraiser fan) or chucky. It's sad we get so many licenses and I wish BHVR would limit it to like 1 chapter a year and 1 paragraph (single one killer or survivor) but i know it won't make them as much money and generate not nearly as much hype which seems to be needed more often than not. I hope the November chapter will be great tho, and I still pray for Jason and springtrap to be another license in the next years

I feel like they make a bunch of licenses because it can make it much easier for them to create abilities and perks for them while not being to costly for creation because Yk layoff…..

I actually want more original chapters. like they can make their own version of a werewolf and they can make their own spider as a killer too even a freaking dinosaur but they might go for the Jurassic Park license instead. but if they were ever to make a spider killer I hope they make a cosmetic where it's half spider half robot. and as for licenses I don't mind who comes in as long as they fit in the game. besides the only licensed killer I like to see in the game is Mortal Kombat's Shao Kahn.

DbD is going to become fortnite eventually in terms of licensing. I feel like the DnD chapter shows they're willing to jump on any license as long as it's lucrative. Maybe we'll have Bowser chasing Mario & Luigi if they secure a deal with Nintendo.

Maybe it’s just me but I found it greedy that we could only but Vecna & the survivor with Auric cells. I know it’s licensed but it’s dbd creating their own versions of these characters no? So their own creation other than where they come from? Maybe I’m overthinking it or don’t know something but I find it greedy

I wouldn't say licensed content appeals to nostalgia, but to the fans of a franchise. I'd rather we get Jason and Springtrap, sooner rather than later. I actually do like original content as well, Clown being one of my favourite killers too, but I'd rather get Jason and Springtrap as soon as possible.

Honestly, yeah. Just like you said, I came for the licensed chapters [Bubba specifically], and stayed for the original ones. And my favourites are the original ones, too [All Things Wicked in particular]. Here's to hoping for more original chapters, and especially ones with a similar theme that Dredge and Unknown have. I want more creepy, unsettling creatures that have fun powers; please Behaviour, keep it up

I sure hope the stream of license chapters is just a way to buy time for quality chapters like All Things Wicked, because lately it feels like the game’s been having an identity crisis.

Imma also throw in my 2 cents, cause why not. In my humble opinion DBD has a CHAPTER issue as well. The chapters are great, do not get me wrong, but currently they are pretty much always "the new thing", while base game stays the same. In my humble opinion, BHVR should also touch up the base game as well a lot more often. And im not talking about perk changes or reworks. I do mean that core of DBD's gameplay needs more. The most common arguement against this is that "The game is already hard enough for beginners." But in opinion thats rather "The asim" problem. People have a hard time picking up dbd, cause they never really played any other game like it before, not like they had a chance considering even other asim games are usually VERY different. (and the tutorial still succ) If BHVR would add new objectives, mechanics etc That are not "time wasters", it would most likely make many people who have had quit, come back. It could also fix the boring "gen regression at all cost" for lower tier killers meta, or perhaps even map problems. And if the changes are bad, then they just dont release it from the PTB, rework or scrap it.

I respect the hell out of you for making this video. It makes me happy knowing I'm not the only one who thinks like this about the current state of the game. Every time I bring this take up amongst friends or just the community in general everyone looks at me crazy like it's so abhorrent to genuinely love OG content over some Licensed chapter that's bound to come to the game at some point anyways. Don't get me wrong, I love the licensed content we get and I'm more than grateful to have gotten some of my dream licenses in this game over the years (some more recent than others) . However, I've ALWAYS preferred the Original chapters over the Licensed ones. It's amazing to see how creative the dev team gets (when done right of course) making original chapters. The Unknown & Sable Ward of All Things Wicked are some of the best original content we've gotten in years and it really serves as a reminder to how creepy BHVR can get when they really want to do so. I do admit that there's still licenses I'd kill to see in the game at some point but I agree with what you've said in the video. Some of my ideas I've wanted for an Original killer are as follows: - Soldier Killer - HEMA Fencer Killer - Sorcerer Killer - Werewolf Killer - Assassin Killer - Evil Superhero Killer - More Cryptid Killers - Psychological Horror Killer - Eldritch/Lovecraftian Monster Killer - Toymaker Killer - Animal Killer (think of a Lion or Tiger) - Game Developer Killer - Chef Killer - Fisherman Killer - The Mad Designer from the Twisted Masquerade events (it's gonna happen at some point next year) - Magician Killer - Shapeshifter Killer - Actual Flying Killer and so so much more.

My preference is a 2 and 2 split, and ideally with each chapter being different from the last so, og, license, og, license. Aside from that, in the beginning you mention that you dislike the lore, i think the lore is hit or miss but there is more enjoyable bits to me than it appears there is to you, but i fs get where you are coming from.

My problem with new licensed chapters is the fact they aren't horror. Don't get me wrong DnD or Lara fit in DBD, but ip's like Terminator, Terrifier, Bioshock, Outlast, F.E.A.R, American Psycho, My Bloody Valentine, Hotline Miami make more sense to be added. Non horror ip's like The Boys or MGS would be bangers as well. I just hope bhvr makes more dlcs like All thing wicked, cuz they cooked with the Unknown.

I don't think bhvr is hesitant about bringing out original chapters judging from a dev comment how they applied for a lot of licenses but got no from a lot of the licenses because dbd is a rated M game, I think just like the bubba and freddy chapter they applied for many licenses and have to add them in as fast as they can.

i honestly wasnt around during skull merchants release as i had stopped playing the game around 2018-2023 but i can say now that she is my favorite killer to play and although i did hate her at first when i came back to the game, once i learned her power, it was definitely way more mamagable and fun

Honestly I’m fine if they take a break with licenses cause i don’t want them to burn out or anything. Honestly some health based chapters could help even though that’s what mid chapters do. Huntress is rlly who brought me to dbd because I seen SinglePlayerNachos lore vid and it drew me in plus a childhood KZfaq group I used to watch a lot they even played dbd when it first came out and I watched it and it made me wanna play and that was before the r licenses even .

I think it's because people likely have a good bank of iri's at this stage, given that many players have been playing for a while. They don't want to work hard in something that people will get for free

Fun fact, somehow BHVR always makes licensed killer powers (Vecna, Freddy, Myers, Pig, Bubba, Xeno) easy to understand (NOT master, that is hard with every power), while creating the most complex ones for originals (Twins, Singularity, Unknown, Artist, Billy).

I got into DBD because of the original chapter Hour of the Witch with Mikaela. Both original AND licenced chapters since then have been hit or miss, depending who you ask.

I'm not going to be harsh about this because you have some valid points. I think that they are adding way too many licenses, and I hope that at least next year we will see some more original content. However, I will say if it wasn't for this licensing stuff happening, I probably never would have seen my dream chapter come true, which is Castlevania. Anyway, besides that, original characters are really starting to suck, and licensed characters are turning into the best ones to play as and so this Problem one way or another Needs to Be Fixed Soon.

I admit, my favorite part of licensed additions is seeing how they adapt what they're working with, balancing gameplay with being accurate. I got into the game because of the Knight, and still main him. I do like seeing what they come up with on their own, but it's just less fun for me because that freedom to make whatever doesn't have the same challenges as adapting things.

Nah I disagree like you said the track record of those 3 last chapters all being kinda ass even tho I like forged in Fog. But the other 2 chapters I didn’t care for and it worried me that Behavior was incapable of getting new licenses and I thought they were slowly running out of new exciting licensed characters to add.

My favorite killer is ghostface not because i like scream, or the mask i like him for his BHVR made Lore i love the lore so much its so interesting. My second favorite killer is singularity! I love everything about HUX his amazing voice lines his interesting power and perks his lore is honestly not the greatest but i still like. I would love more original content dredge is my third favorite and knight is up there on looks alone! But i don't hate how the game is going would i love more original content. Yes. But the licensed content isn't bad by any means wesker, demo, chucky, and pyramid head are all amazing killers and i would love more like them. I think BHVR needs to strike a balance between the two. Because both of these worlds are great and I'd love to see the best of them.

I know the topic of this video but I would love if they added James Sunderland to the game. They already have multiple others plus it makes no sense that his own personal tormenter (pyramid head) is in the game without him. This would also work perfect with the Silent Hill 2 remaster drop.

Big agree all around. I played the beta then came back for silent hill and now I'd much rather original over Licensed anyday of the week. They just don't do anything for me they ate boring and seldom see any additional support while originals grab more of my attention.

Couldn't disagree more. I love the licensed content and it keeps me coming back. Most of the originals these days are usually bad and don't interest me. If it was up to me we'd be getting even more. The only original I've ever even had a little interest in was the unknown and Sable. So i say, keep the licenses coming to give them more time to cook up that 1 great original. Instead of a few mediocre ones.

Finally. Someone that says what is on my brain. I LOVE the original chapters. I love the Singularity, I love the Knight, I love Dredge, I love the Unknown (even if my expectations were a bit different because of the teaser), and a lot of these original chapters are so cool. I want more sci-fi horror ones cuz we've got ONE in the form of Singularity. My issue with the original chapters is they sometimes get a raw deal. This is just because BHVR is..BHVR. I was so excited to play Singularity and when I did on release day, he was difficult to understand, hard to play, and the counterplay was kind of easy to disable his power. Knight was so cool but his power was lacking and was only good for spawning directly on pallets or 3-genning before putting in the haste and adding more QOL changes but he's still kind of add-on dependent (never taking off map of the realm). Skull Merchant COULD be cool but 3-gen was the only thing she was good at because she was bad at everything else. When the Unknown came out, I was so happy he wasn't just a FUN killer but a good killer too. It's the only one to my current memory where I can go 'man good original chapter.' I think the first impressions are important because without the name brand like Wekser, Nemesis, Chucky, etc., you'll get stuck as the '3-gen killer' 'the killer that needs five steps ahead to play' 'the anti-loop only killer' or the 'locker rng killer.' Even if there's some changes that's made these killers better to play as and against, it seems to me at least that these original characters are always getting some raw end of the deal SOMEWHERE in their creation and it's unfortunate. There's also licensed chapters that have the exact same issue and sell well but that's the thing, it's a licensed big name. It's like...buying a shirt from wall mart because you know 'wall mart' but not from the lesser known clothing shop down the street. The big name brand is gonna get more people because it's already recognized. I just think it's really unfortunate. Some of the killers I was excited for turn people away for one reason or another, including myself. I never even purchased Unknown solely because I think it's a cool killer but not something into, since I was expecting an analog horror killer instead of like grenade launcher demon. I love the power, it's fun but man do I wish such a similar thing would happen to the other original chapters. As a side note, I came to DBD for no licensed chapters. Absolutely blind playing the game for the first time. I'm sure there's a minority of us that's also done the same and maybe got excited for licenses or original chapters that came later down the pipeline. I personally really enjoy the original chapters more than the licensed chapters.

Apart from the Unknown, have Behaviour made a killer most people like in the past few years? Singularity is too difficult for most people to enjoy playing and awful on console. Dredge similar in some ways. Knight and Skull Merchant were back to back originals that almost had people thinking DBD’s time was up. I feel like licenses mean Behaviour don’t need to worry about a lot of stuff, just focus on a suitable power and perks. People will just enjoy playing as Alien or Chucky if they’re fans.
