C(series) = 1/(1/c1 + 1/c2) => 1/( 1/10 + 1/10 ) => 1/ (1/5 ) => 5uF, but yes, the voltage rating adds up. Hope I didn't come across as too much of a jerk there.

After going though the work to connect the NLBA1 to the battery, you were about 2 clicks away from reactiving the BMS and having a good chance to end up with a working battery. Of course some controlled charge-/discharge cycles would have been recommended, but it would have been worth a try instead of throwing away a battery after just 2(!!) cycles.

The vast majority of batteries in laptops are heavily used, and not worth saving. This is an uncommon exception, and it's not worth paying the unlock licence to save one battery. I do agree that this batt was a textbook candidate for unlocking, but it's a very rare exception in my experience.

I had a motorcycle that "blew" a fuse like that. I was going crazy for a while trying to figure out what was going on. Things were getting voltage and the fuse looked OK and a quick continuity test beeped. Finally after seeing that the ignition module acting weird I checked the resistance on the fuse and just like this, it had resistance. So there wasn't enough current to turn things on. Something I always check now even if a fuse looks good. I didn't know they could do that either but it makes sense if you think about it because the bridge inside the fuse can burn just enough to increase the resistance to where it doesn't burn all the way through and disconnect.

They've all got their disadvantages sadly... Personally I'm a Dell Latitude fanboy, I think they're a great compromise of build/cost/features, but most laptops are all very similar in reparability depending on what time period you look at. But yea I don't have any strong feelings about any brand/series that I think it without fault. Tbh I generally feel like I just don't like laptops full stop. The Framework might be the first one I care about, but we need more than one company making modular laptops like that for it to really be relevant / offer decent choice.

With a subscription licence add-on, the NLBA can do a lot of unlocking - it's just not a feature I'm super into because most of the time if a battery is locked, it's probably knackered. Could we just take a moment and acknowledge, that 0805 capacitors with 22uF and 25V should not exist? Whether it's an old Macbook, a new Macbook, a Lenovo thinkpad, a Lenovo dockingstation, an Dell Laptop - these things are becoming a running gag and not a very good one at that. Apparently they can be manufatured with that kind of spec, but with 0 tolerance and thus only with a very low reliability.

Yep, it's the price paid for people wanting ever smaller devices, unreliability.
@NebukadV
@NebukadV Жыл бұрын
@@MattyEngland I don't necessarily agree to that in this case. On this board as well as on most other boards I have seen these capacitors on, there would have been enough space to place 2 10 µF caps instead. There problem here seems to be, that at least one capacitor manufacturer claims to be able to produce 22 µF capacitors and of course, OEMs like Apple and others go for them, because it reduces the BOM. But apparently, it is just not possible to produce a 22 µF in such a small case, that is reliable. Either the capacitor manufacturer needs to stop producing and selling these or the OEMs need to stop using them, even though they exist and "work" in theory.

That is possible, some repairs are unviable, maybe possible but too complex and risky to attempt for the money you can charge for them or require equipment they don't have (reballing a CPU often requires some equipment or serious skill to do without) have you compared your estimates to replacing the logic board all toghether? That is an easy swap for anyone willing to follow directions. Keep in mind the 2016 and 2017 A1706 have removable SSDs, so you only need the logic board. Look at the prices of buying a logic board vs. buying a whole computer with a cracked screen or bad keyboard as well.

2 x 10uF caps in series would give you 5uF!! Also all that scrubbing from side to side with the soldering iron tip is a very bad idea IMHO. You run a very high risk of detaching the pad by overheating in combination with mechanical force.
