Chevy Chase Pavilion is just one part of the retail throuple that makes up the Wiscon and Western Ave. shopping district in Friendship Heights. This area spans the Washington, DC and Chevy Chase, MD border...and there are now two dead malls right across the street from each other. It's pretty crazy to think how long these two places coexisted. Thanks for watching!

As a local kid who grew up at Mazza in its glory days of the 80s, this video (which is very well researched) is hard to watch. I moved on from DC a long time ago and so I never saw the Friendship Heights area struggle the way it has. I only knew its’ growth and success, which was a fun and stable time for me. This mall was my social life growing up. Bought so many things, saw so many movies, met up with so many friends, ate so many McD’s meals, bought so many albums…the memories are too many. So sad to me, but I appreciate your video and thank you for updating us. Best of luck and hope to see more down the road.

Marna the Mall PA Lady solved the mystery of the three Amish kids on Rumspringa! They were the security guards, all along! Let me know if any of you want me to ship out some fresh microwaved "rice dish", or if you need some old Austrian men yodeling "Moscow Nights" with tongue tremolo for your next pool party. Happy June, everyone. Make sure to sub and ring the bell, and also to follow me on social media so you can follow what's happening behind the scenes. Links are in my descriptions!

Well yeah in the sense that it’s empty, but the space you’re looking at is very much how things looked in the 80’s and 90’s. High quality appointments, glass skylights, brass railings; a cathedral of capitalism.

The sound design on the “loud speaker” is spot on! You even added additional echo compared to usual to account for that massive cavernous area. Great attention to detail! Also, I know I know it’s just a little thing, but durning filming your walk through the corridor with the neon lighting, that upward camera spin to turn back around was shot very nicely.

That Woodies was lovely. Behind Mazza Gallerie there was a fantastic Lord & Taylor as well, which had a little restaurant in it for many years. It, too, was a victim of COVID, shuttering within the past year (Lord & Taylor-the Birdcage restaurant within it closed some years earlier.)

@@allysonalt5291 Loyd and Taylor of course closed many, many stores around the country. The local mall had one which closed in the early spring. Now with Sears also gone, just JC Penny and Macy's are left. This was where two mall combined into one, with lots of excess retail space. Amazon is building a huge warehouse nearby, along with fulfillment center, who will win this game in retail, no one knows.

@@iworkout6912 the Giant grocery store here is being replaced by an Amazon grocery....and the other grocery store in the same neighborhood is a Whole Foods, also owned by Amazon. So basically we have the same store, two blocks apart. Seems like an odd choice to me.

I remember when that shopping area was at its prime: Mazda Gallerie had a lovely Neiman Marcus, and some local luxury boutiques and a shoe store “Stephanie Kelian” which had the most exotic designer shoes. Lord & Taylor was in the back, and there was a Woodward & Lothrop where the Bloomingdale’s is… then there was an Issey Miyake boutique across from Neimans, and then down the street was a Gianni Versace boutique and Gucci and YSL was further down before closing out the area with a Saks. That 80s and early 90s era had some of the best shopping in DC area history!!!

That kid was lucky he didn't die going through the rails. Another kid in 2011 was not so lucky when he ran from his mother, grabbed the down escalator railing on the wrong side, fit through the 6 inch gap between it, and the railing surrounding the escalators. Unfortunately, he lost his grip high up, and fell over 15 feet into a glass display case. Unfortunately, the kid died soon after the fall (Sears, Auburn Mall, Auburn, MA). PS: Don't feel bad about losing your car in a sprawling parking garage. I had that happen at Providence Place (Providence, RI). I knew where it was, but the sprawling maze of bridges, and ramps, made it hard to get to, and I also resorted to the "Lock" button to sound the horn to home onto it. Unlike you, I didn't make it in time, and had to pay more.

Within Sydney, Australia at Town Hall Station, a major station in Sydney where it provides underground connections to three shopping malls were at the northern end there are two "A" Class malls managed and owned by Vicinity Centers named "The Galeries" a modern mall and "QVB" a heritage mall within the heratige listed Queen Victoria Building while at the southern end there is one "B" Class mall managed by Colliers named "Town Hall Square" a modern mall as well. All three malls are thriving, both pre-and-post COVID-19 pandemic. This goes to show how Australian retail spaces are planned, designed, built, managed and operated differently without ever being over saturated with malls of the same class and caliber but diverse yet suitable for the area, demography and target audience.

Nordstrom rack closed last month. I was at the fixture sale. I wonder if TJ Maxx will move in to either that space or the former World Market space once Mazza Gallerie is closed down. I think this mall has a lot of potential but not with traditional chain retail. More food options, independent shops, and entertainment businesses (like escape rooms) might be in order. By the way, Ballston Quarter might make an good expedition. It shows how to reposition a mall like this (and how not to, as they already have a high vacancy rate) and there is a lot of interesting history there.

City Center killed Mazza Gallerie and CC Pavilion when it opened I. 2015. You did not discuss the 4th mall, the Collection, on the northeast corner of the Wisconsin - Western Ave intersection. I used to live across the street and it was the first mall to show high vacancy. I moved to the residential neighborhood south of Mazza and it was holding on until COVID hit. CC Pavilion was the second mall in the neighborhood affected by declining foot traffic in the FH neighborhood. Wisconsin Place has also experienced low occupancy rates as well.

Indianapolis has a very similar structure involving the Embassy Suites hotel in the city. Claypool Court is a tiny mall with maybe 50,000 of retail space, but is attached to Circle Centre mall which is a massive mall in the city. Anyway, the first floors of the Embassy Suites house this small mall, which used to have an Old Navy and other shops. Now it is mostly restaurants. All other retail is now in Circle Centre, which is also struggling. It’s a beautiful mall, though.

I'm curious to see what they do as well. We (the neighborhood) have fought against ALL medical, since there are already multiple medical buildings within a short distance. I'm all for retail at street level, offices or residences above. What I find interesting is that building housing would appear to make sense, but there's an incredibly densely built "village" of condos and rental buildings within 4 blocks of here, and two other large buildings even closer-and one of those two is also rentals. Unless they're reasonably priced, I'm not sure how much more residential space is needed.

And they wonder why we called it barf-aroni as kids! The product Chevy Chase was hawking lasted about as long as the commercial did. Or that mall. I only wish Rice A Roni had lasted about as long.

Congrats on being fully vaxed. I'm 12 days away from dose 2 here myself, knock on wood. Hope to have my next gig and be back as a Patreon supporter soon because your approach to content is quite unique. I spent a couple years in DC in the late 1990s, so have enjoyed the DC-area coverage.

They really need to make these mall spaces with residential real-estate apartments and condos., they need permanent foot traffic and places like this will thrive

I worked a CCP from construction top out. Opening was rushed to catch Christmas shopping. I left when the developer gave up stock in a cash call. Seems it was always on the margin. Cheesecake Factory did gangbusters in those days.

I really hope they give new life to this mall because it's would be sad to see if they don't do anything to give back life and update

Loved your brief appearance, Sal! It was very Hitchcock-esque! And the tongue-yodelers? One of the creepiest things EVER in any vid...maybe it's my Jewishness coming out of me, but it made me think of Nazi-Germany...go figure. Love you, bro!

@@sal I agree but I'm also not rich so ngl I've been shopping at Walmart. Here in Ontario Canada the restrictions are such that Walmart is still allowed to be open while everything else isn't

I spent far too long waiting for him to explain how an actor got involved in a mall to the extent of having it named after him...... then I realised.

It's been gutted and converted into discount stores, a bowling alley, and a DC DMV. None of it is recognizable today.
