Hello everyone, and welcome to the Galleria at Erieview located in downtown Cleveland Ohio. The Galleria would open in 1987, and would start a revitalization project for downtown Cleveland in the 1990s, however, things would not go to plan. Galleria at Erieview would not be able to attract a major anchor store, it would only be able to hold small in-line shops. Whilst there would also be a food court for people working in the office tower to get lunch, it wouldn’t be enough. By the early 2000s this property would be declining. Join Sophia and I as we take a walk through this dying mall in downtown Cleveland.

It will probably be demolished! I looked up this mall and it had like 5 things in it, I guess? In my opinion, this was an enormous flop. This mall, like you said, literally opened without any big department store retailers like JCPenney or Macys. But the location of this “mall” is so small that a department store of that size would pretty much take up half of the mall’s space. This was a terribly thought out plan. And after only 20 something years of being open, redevelopment plan were already in the works in 2003.

It's a shame what this has turned into. It used to be full of shops and eating places. I know a lot of the stores closed because the rent is so high and if you're only getting customers at lunch time, it's hard to stay open. Actually, Erieview Tower, the office building that is attached, is supposed to be turned into Marriott's high-end W hotel plus apartments. I guess they're hoping to revamp the Galleria and put restaurants and stores back in there.

I worked here in 1987 at Dean Witter. Thank you so much for posting this. Brought tears to my eyes and flooded me with wonderful memories of a time forgotten.

I used to go to this mall in the 90s. I still have CDs that I bought in a music store that was on the second floor in one of the retail spaces near the big mobile hanging from the ceiling. It is sad to see it empty. I never saw a lot of people there, even in the years when all stores were operating. I also used to go to have lunch in the food court downstairs.

I’m literally 20 minutes from Cleveland and never been there. Great Northern always for me.

I am sometimes at the Celebrezze building across the street. I often venture over to Galleria. Beautiful mall. The coffee shop is nice. There is the Hungarian museum and there is a new store called Browsing Room Bookstore, which is actually quite lovely. I wish this mall the very best but it is in decline. I think YMCA is the anchor. I love malls. I hate to see them disappear. It is nice to have somewhere to go.
