The Arcade is really beautiful and worth preserving

The Cleveland Arcade has got to be one of the finest shopping real estate that I've ever seen. 😁👍

Is it me or does the Cleveland Arcade remind you of a cruise ship on the inside. The decor is beautiful.

I was in Cleveland a little over a year ago today, bringing my son there for the first time. Walking around Downtown, I insisted on going through here. My wife scoffed at detouring through a mall, but I pointed out that it would get us out of the wind and that she might really enjoy it. She did. In fact, we all did. Even though nothing is open, it's a beautiful space to walk through and really nice just to see. I know people in Cleveland know it and will try their best to protect it, but it's great you're putting it out there, so others know what a beautiful space it is and what wonderful history it has behind it. There's a level of nostalgia for a lot of the malls on your channel for a lot of people, but they're nearly all stale, cookie-cutter malls essentially out of a box that are worth documenting before their destruction, are not really worth saving. The Arcade is different and it's great that you're revealing it to people.

The first building has a beautiful interior

These two malls, although may look similar from the outside in shape, give off completely different vibes. The arcade is more of a work of art, well maintained and inviting, whereas the galleria looks generic, cold and neglected. Thank you for making another great video!

The Arcade is one of the most beautiful places in Cleveland. During the holidays the decorations are spectacular. I hope it's never torn down.

I stayed in the Hyatt in this arcade in 2017. Prior to that, I had walked through the arcade... saw how beautiful it was, and hoped I'd get back to Cleveland so I could stay there. Sure enough, I got the call, and booked this hotel. It was really neat, I stayed in a hotel room on the 2nd floor, which used to be a storefront. In the middle of the night, when downtown Cleveland was pretty much quiet, I just walked around this arcade/hotel to get some fresh air, admired the architecture, then headed back to my room.

The Arcade is beautifully preserved, reminds me of the Bradbury Building in Los Angeles, but on a much grander scale, more light, more space, more gorgeous details. The Arcade was actually one of the first "malls" in the country. However, it was first and foremost and office building. Seriously beautiful and glad that Cleveland's leadership didnt let it get bulldozed to put up another modern skyscraper. However it was converted into a hotel years ago so really its not a mall in the same sense anymore. Van Swearingen arcade is right behind Tower City center and is also a hidden architectural gem in Downtown. Hopefully you got to check out Tower City...loved that place as a kid! The Galleria at Erieview never did make sense to me and totally surprised that it is still open. Was fairly dead 15 years ago when I still lived in Cleveland. It is part of the Erieview Tower office building and really functions more like a lunch time hangout for workers than a standalone mall. Kind of off the beaten path for being downtown and does not have the traditional mall layout (anchors plus supporting stores). Sadly Cleveland is so over-malled so many have either failed or are failing. Randall and Euclid were just the oldest and best known, but one could argue that Great Northern (N Olmsted), Midway (Elyria), and Beachwood Place are struggling to stand out against Southpark (Strongsville). And that's just in Cleveland, don't forget you have Chapel Hill (Akron) and Belden Village (Canton) just a short drive away.

This is your best one yet. Two brilliant examples, across 100 years, of a way of life gone forever.

I’ve lived I near Cleveland for 35 years, and I had no idea The Arcade excited. When life returns to normal, I’m checking it out. The malls he mentioned were only a hand-full of malls built in Northeastern Ohio. There was also the Euclid Square Mall, Randall Park Mall, Richmond Town Square Mall, Beachwood Place Mall (still open), Great Lakes Mall (still open), Eaton Chagrin Boulevard, Legacy Mall (outdoor Mall), and the Ashtabula Square Mall. That’s just some malls on the east side of Cleveland!

This was really an interesting dual viewpoint of the architecture in the area. The beautiful, opulent, old-style architecture of the Arcade compared to the more typical mall look of Gallery at Eerieview was a really cool look at the evolution of architecture over that time period. I do historical reenactments of the Victorian/Edwardian eras and I just want to walk through the Arcade in my full regalia. What a beautiful piece of...well, everything! I'm so glad it's been preserved!

Yours is one of those few where I hit the 'Like' icon before it even starts . The visuals are roughly similar to others but what makes yours so different is the obvious homework you do about the property and its history. Always fascinating -

Cafe Sausalito moved. Mixed Greens closed. I used to work near both the locations. Everything closes early there, when the downtown workers go home. Stone Oven may also be gone. Winking Lizard was having a completion party for people who drank a bunch of beer there. An annual challenge you pay to be in.

There was a time up into the 1980's when executives would work in NYC Mon/Fri and then commute back home to Cleveland for weekends.

hi Sal, I remember both of these malls from the early 90's to current. I have not been in either one for a few years as there is just no reason for me to go there. I know since the ymca has moved into the galleria as well as the bank they have more life to them. sad the food court is now totally dead that used to be a fun place and good food. I remember so many stores being in the mall when Dick Jacobs was still alive. seems once he got older and sicker things went down fast, and all his malls in the metro Cleveland area. hope next time you visit Cleveland you can take some time and tour tower city, another dead mall in public square. keep up the great work.

I loved the Arcade reminded me of lost work of art The Handyside Arcade in my hometown Newcastle upon Tyne England. The Galleria is so general apart from the glass ceiling that is beautiful work of engineering. Another fun adventure Love from 🇬🇧 💋💋💋

Thanks for sharing this little piece of Cleveland. I definitely want to check out the Arcade next time I am in town. This city is where my dad grew up and where his very large family still lives. He moved out to California in the late 70s and this is where we reside now. However, I believe we met my aunt for lunch at the Galleria when I was 12, because she worked in the tower for Key Bank back in the early 90s while we were in town visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday. We did do some shopping inside after lunch and I remember it was quite busy with lots of open shops. I remember we purchased some early Christmas gifts there at the Warner Brothers store for the cousins and a Christmas gift for my grandma who lived in Parma at the time from a home decor shop. Ahhh Good memories. Still love that city and exploring new places there whenever we get a chance to visit.

I remember when they opened the Galleria. I was 9. Everybody wanted to go down there but it’s popularity didn’t last long because at that time we had a bunch of other malls in the suburbs (most of which are long gone now, and have been demolished and redeveloped) that were still thriving back then and much easier to get to. People didn’t want to go downtown just to go to the Galleria. The Arcade is beautiful. I don’t think they can touch the Arcade with it being a historical building. One thing I do love about downtown Cleveland is the historical architecture that is being preserved. The next time I’m downtown (practically never) I’ll check both places out. Thanks for the video.

Downtown Milwaukee, WI has a similar situation. In Milwaukee there was the Plankinton Arcade, another historic indoor shopping arcade, very beautiful classic architecture, not quite as nice as Cleavlands, but nice, but then in the 80s they opened the Grand Avenue Mall, next to it, however it was attached to the Plankinton Arcade, so it made it one large downtown mall. It did have anchors though. Anchored by The Boston Store (A Bon-Ton company later). And then later TJ Maxx would take up part of the Plankinton Arcade. I visited it before it closed, very 80s aesthetic still in the newer section. Of course Boston Store is gone now, and they closed the whole place now to transform it into a business center with some food and shops and apartments now.

I remember being in Cleveland with a college basketball pep band in March 2003. We had a group of 12 very hungry people wandering around looking for food after 6PM. Turned out, a hard thing to do in downtown at that time. I recall hearing of this place from a local and wandering that way. Tugged on the door to find it locked. We resorted to a pricy steak place in the bottom of what was the National City Bank building (now PNC) So, atleast back then, still hard to find food there at any hour past 5. Oh, and if I remember correctly, 2001, our marching band did a full performance marching through a mall in Cleveland. Achievement point unlocked: Blast a Trombone in a full mall!

Hey Sal, great video. I go to the Galleria for lunch pretty often - the retail situation is as bad or even worse than what you saw here. Outside of the quick mart on the first floor, I'm not even sure if the one clothing/gift store you walked by early in the video is still open. Same with the glass store on the second floor. The Stone Oven closed a few months ago, and I've heard that at least one of the 3 food court tenants left is leaving. The Winking Lizard on the first floor does pretty brisk lunch business, though.

I am from the Cleveland area, and have gone to the Galleria a few times. The occupancy has been reduced to the food court and YMCA and Dollar Bank (not accessible from the mall). The rest of the tenants have pretty much left. The Hungarian museum is still there lol. The food court gets a good amount of traffic during lunch.

Every mall's a dead mall this spring.

When I worked downtown year ago, I used to get lunch at the Galleria and walk around the Arcade. There was (is?) a pretty cool coin shop there. I haven't been there in a really long time, though. Shame that they're both dead because they're both gorgeous buildings.They were on the way to being dead about ten years ago when I worked down there. Now I kind of want to go back.

The Arcade is incredibly beautiful. That galleria is nice too but doesn't have that feel of generational, architectural permanence like the Arcade, which seems both historic and timeless in it's aesthetic.

Outstanding as always Sal. I sure hope people will wake up and realize the treasures these malls are. They are living history. Seeing all these malls die is so sad. My great fear now is with all the malls being ordered closed, and being on shaky financial grounds, many will never make it through this pandemic :-(

Arcade is absolutely gorgeous. I think it'd be great if they made the arcades stores into mini apartments like they did with their historic arcade in Connecticut ... it'd definitely bring more money than these vacant storefronts

Incredibly well done video … thanks so much for the detailed history of these two entities. The Arcade is really stunning. What I find so interesting is how wealthy investors juggle properties around, all looking to capitalize on their acquisitions, and most of them having to dump or lose them when they don't pan out. But I'm sure that they all use the tax codes and corporate shell games to ensure that even when they lose money they make money.

The first arcade reminded me of the old, restored shopping arcades in Sydney, Australia (particularly the Queen Victoria Building and the Strand Arcade) both in terms of the general "feel" of the place and in terms of the fact that neither have "anchor" stores per se. Fortunately, the Sydney ones are doing better than Cleveland's because they are located in the main tourist and city shopping area, and many commuters walk through the QVB on their way to and from work, because its basement level is connected to a train station. Have fun working through your backlog of footage!

Sal first 10 miles of bad road would involve the late great Shelly Winters. Everyone stay in watch vids stay safe. The Buildings are gorgeous they could be beautiful re-purposed as luxury apartments. I hope these spaces have brighter futures. When our “lock down” is over masses will be sooooooo sick of on line shopping Malls will have a resurgence. If only temporarily. The Galleria at Erieview kinda reminds me of the *Arcade Shops* at Fifth Avenue Place in Pittsburgh; with the exception of the skylights. It also happened to been built around the same time as well and was ALSO trying to mimic a turn-of-the century arcade. You should probably check it out some day (that's if this pandemic doesn't last for TOO LONG...)

Thankfully the Arcade is a national historic landmark. The hotel is not bad, but the emptiness of the Arcade downstairs is quite spooky.

Stayed in hotel about 6 years ago. The Arcade is stunning, just no business in or around it at the time. Sad cuz it’s cool. Love your series.

It looks like they were setting up for the Winking Lizard world tour party when you were filming. The Winking Lizard is a restuarant & bar chain in ohio that started on Miles road in Bedford Ohio just outside of Cleveland. They have a program called the world tour of beers that has been going on for over 30 years. Basically, you sign up and drink 100 different beers off of their rotating list during the year and receive prizes. Once you reach 100, you get a jacket with that year's logo on it and an invitation to the world tour party, typically held in January or February. I haven't lived in Ohio for several years now, but when I did, I completed the world tour several years in a row. I really miss the Lizard, I have moved around several times since and haven't found anything quite like it. I think the location in the Galleria opened sometime around 2015.

REMINDS ME THE QVB IN SYDNEY, QUEEN VICTORIA BUILDING. IN FACT I THINK THIS INTERIOR LOOKS ALMOST NICER, BUT THE QVB IS A POPULAR MALL, HISTORIC BUT HOLDS ITS CHARM AND IS VERY BUSY. THIS ARCADE SHOULD BE AS POPULAR THE QVB, WHAT A PITY

I didn't even know that building was ever a mall. But I know they're turning it into apartments and offices now lol... I always show visitors the Arcade, and it's always a bit of a shame that theres like... nothing there... but the building makes for good sight seeing at least
