This was fabulous! I'm a lifelong GB resident, and take my daughter to that mall every Santa and Easter Bunny to get pictures with no line. I frequent that mall quite often now since they've upgraded it. I wish you had gone inside the Toys R Us though. The inside of that store is exactly the same as it has been since I was a small child in the 80's. (No idea what year it was put there.) It's weird because you see all these modern toys and games but the walls and everything are the same. Also, I believe the horse on the coin rides was in front of toys r us when I was little, I have a brief recollection of it. I could be wrong on that. And where the JP's Deli is inside the mall was this yellow Sam's Pretzels I think) and we would always go and get big pretzels with hot cream cheese. The JP's sill has pretzels like that which is great! I really enjoyed this video, thanks for posting it!

I lived within walking distance of Glen Burnie Mall during its heyday (60s and 70s) and spent many a happy hour there after school and on Saturdays. Remember Montgomery Wards, the five-and-dime (Murphy's?), The Lantern restaurant, and the theater where I saw Romeo and Juliet and Planet of the Apes. Many good memories of the Glen Burnie Mall!

I remember it like it was yesterday. Montgomery Wards, Sears, remember across the street from Glen Burnie Mall was Hechinger? The home improvement store. We moved from MD to PA in the mid 90's, and used to visit Builder's Square, before Lowe's and Home Depot came along. The mall with the colored balls though, I think was Harundale Mall. I saw a couple of black and white photos through a Google search on that mall. They had McCrory's which I remember being one of the last stores in that mall.

I've been going to this mall since I was a kid. I no longer go inside it, but I do frequent the stores that are on the outside. People nowadays don't really like to go inside malls anymore, they prefer to just park in front of a store and go shopping, or just shop online. Glen Burnie mall definitely was smart to utilize the "center" concept for it's mall. Hunt Valley Towne Center is definitely a great example of where shopping centers are moving towards.

The Target used to be a Montgomery Ward which I believe was attached to the mall. It also used to have a single screen theater. The hhgregg and Office Depot used to be a single store front which was home of a Best Buy which moved across the street. It's a weird little mall. Like you said, in no danger of closing (mostly because of the stronger anchors they have and the outward facing store fronts surrounding the mall), but it's definitely dead in the enclosed area. I only got here when I go to Power Gamer.

This mall has always been on life support. Started coming here in the early to mid 90s and it was kinda dead then. Haven't been since the Best Buy and Dick's moved out, but was there when the Montgomery Wards and Walden Books closed. Hunt Valley was a dead mall with one store back in the 90s but they brought it back.

I loved this mall. So many good memories there from the 70's and 80's. The place would always be packed. It also had a great arcade in it years ago. Great place to meet up with friends, play games, and do some shopping. Montgomery Ward was a part of that mall at one time. A place called the Record Bar was a popular place to buy records and tapes. I'm going to miss this place after they tear it down. Hopefully the ToysRUs stays open since it's a separate building.Another popular mall in the area was the Harundale Mall. It's been torn down now,but it was a very popular mall back in the day too.

I'm a little late to the show and I didn't read through the comments.. but you were talking about the tiles covering old store fronts down a side hallway. The tiles on the left are covering the former location of (what I think) was a small amusement type area called Jillian's with several carnival style rides and games the entrance was where the nail place is in the video. When I visited the mall as a pre-teen and early teenager in the late 90's early 2000's the right side was all panels. I bought some of my first video games in that Toys R Us. That Power Gamer store at the beginning was the start of my love for games. I had NO idea that video games and consoles could be imported until I saw that place offering versions of Nintendo stuff that I had never seen. I played in a Pokemon card tournament in that side of the mall, also. I was deeply saddened when the Waldenbooks closed.

I live in this area. My family used to go to Glen Burnie mall quite a bit. It looks way different now. Much different from when I was a kid back in the early, mid and late 90's. I am 30 now. That red tile you said you liked, the whole floor used to be made of that tile back when I was a kid. It used also be a more popular mall. It was never that large anyway. It was always a small place. Back in the 90's there was multiple places to eat there. One of my favorites was the Hot Sam's pretzel place. There was a pretty good Pizza and Italian food place in there as well. It is all gone now obviously. There also used to be a Walden's Books in there as well. Now it is just sad as you said.

I was the store manager at the Famous Footwear for 3 years and that mall was busy around the holiday season when Toys-R-Us was open. When they closed it hurt. I use to go to the Quiznos and to the Five Guys for lunch. I have pictures of my daughter riding the carousel there. While I was there they built HH Greg and when they went under it turned into a Office Depot. We had a really bad theft problem there as well. With that being said, shout out to Tom the security guard that always had my back.

I remember going to GB mall when I was a kid in the late 90's/early 2000's. It was neat to go to, but I always remember it being mostly empty. It's always been an small older mall. My dad, who grew up in GB, said it used to be the place to go, but then Marley Station came along and took away a lot of business, and then as most residents know Arundel Mills came in and took a lot of business from both malls! Now Marley is going to be dead before long, having lost a lot of stores, and Glen Burnie Mall is almost just a strip mall.

We moved to Glen Burnie when I was 4 in 1959. I remember when they were building up that area of Ritchie Highway in the early sixties (we used to travel that way to go into Baltimore to visit my parent's families). From 695 South there was nothing on Ritchie but woods and a drive in movie (Ritchie Drive-in). They started building and quickly there was the Glen Burnie Mall, EJ Korvetts, and then the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles (later it became the MVA). The Mall struggled in its early days. It had a Montgomery Wards dept store and an A&P Food store that my parents shopped once a week on Friday after my dad would go to the bank to cash his paycheck (there used to be long lines at the bank on Fridays where people would cash their checks). The Mall had trouble renting space on the opposite end of the mall from Wards. In 1971 I got a job working at the little snack stand at the south end of the mall near the A&P. I believe the Toys R Us was added sometime before that. They had a grand opening and had Lee Majors as a guest (The Six Million Dollar Man TV show was on then and very popular). it was most busiest day the mall ever had and they have not had that many people there since. Cheap malls like Glen Burnie were hurting because the big malls like Columbia and Security Square mall were taking most of the business. After the oil crises though, the big malls began to suffer because people did not want to drive. In like 1972 the stand I worked at added pizza by the slice and the business took off. On the Saturday after black Friday we sold 27 dozen 16 " pizzas by the slice @ .35 cents. I graduated High school and by then they were selling very high quality Hot Dogs. PS The floor in the original mall was just squares of polished concrete.

I walked the mall around the same time in Spring, 2015 and felt the same way! An online real property search suggests that 6711 Ritchie Highway (with the exception of the Target Store on the southeast side) is owned by an LLC with a Miami Beach mailing address. The property is developed and arranged in such a way that access to the Mall itself is discouraged.

I was born and raised in Glen Burnie and still live here (on the same road as the mall). I can tell you the kiosks behind the deli are owned and operated by the same few people. They tend to float between them when the mall is dead (which is why they seem unmanned). The end store across from JP's Deli (next to the hallway) was a small diner/eating spot years ago. The store next to it that is never open but has stuff in the window was a Vitamin World (I was an assistant manager up until they closed. I helped shut the store down back in the earlier 2010's.) They lady that owns the space now teaches craft classes. When classes are not in session the space just looks empty.

This mall kinda reminds me of Deerbrook Mall, in the north suburbs of Chicago(I think in Northbrook?). It was a hybrid between a shopping mall and a mall with big box anchors, in both an indoor and an outdoor portion. This mall predates the nearby Northbrook Court, and the outdoor portion is still open today. Till a few years ago, the inside of that mall was totally empty with no stores left, except for TJMaxx(seriously!). Sadly though the TJMaxx there finally closed within the last few years, and the indoor mall portion got sealed up for good after that. Back entrance of Deerbrook was totally original as of my final ever visit there(where I got all my pics), but the front entrance had been modernized there. And it even had a working fountain, too. Finally that mall had a General Cinema 3 or 4 screen(I forget, was something like that) theater, that closed down in I believe the late 90s. Still have my pics of the inside of this mall. And refreshingly it was a rare mall where I didn't sense tons of security patrolling inside it, so it's one of the few malls where I have both smartphone pics and regular pics(usually I don't do this, and only smartphone pics I take) of this mall. I should eventually see if I have uploaded those pics to Dead Mall Enthusiasts on facebook, if I hadn't already. Loved this video, and too bad they decided to 'demall' Glen Burnie Mall!

I've tried one of these when i was in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware a few years back and i agree, these things are rigged so that you can't win unless you spend a quite a bit of money and VERY carefully aim the claw into the exact position to grab any of the money balls! i was at least able to walk away with $5 that day.

I saw a strip mall with a Toys'Я'Us that closed down in 2006. Also had a closed-down Target next door, a closed down Top Foods across the street, & a dying mall not two blocks away. Oddly enough, the businesses on the blocks between them were thriving. Would have been a great place to explore, had there not been a cop station on the other side of the Target, which appeared to be boarded up tighter than a nun's underpants. I remember in the early 90s, alien heads, felt tophats, bedazzled jackets, backpack patches, glow-in-the-dark posters, trapper keepers, Lisa Franks, mood rings, yin-yangs, holofoil cards, glitter stickers, roller blades, Crystal Pepsi...... "I don't know if there's storefronts behind these white panels." There very well could be. I've been to a renovated mall where there was 6 empty stores & an arcade behind such a wall.

6:37 You had to stop the light on the "WIN" as it slowed down to the left, and if it stopped on the "WIN", you won the item that was on the bottom of that column. Won CD's from this game at an arcade in Virginia Beach years back. It doesn't exist there anymore.

This is the mall where I saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture during its original theatrical run, in early 1980. I remember the lobby cards. Glen Burnie Mall had restaurants in the open middle section which were pretty good and popular. This and Harundale Mall, the first on the East Coast, did have cinemas, though Harundale's wasn't in the Mall building proper.

they also put them in subway stations like the DC metro. I lived in the area (Fairfax County, VA then DC) for more then two decades. They have been in the process of redeveloping the Tyson's Corner Mall since 2012 and are making it into mixed residential and business area (overpriced though). They put in four more metro stops as part of the redevelopment. Nice area, but a traffic nightmare pretty much Monday through Friday.

Hey Dan I don't know if you still read these but I lived just down the road from there in old Glen Burnie by the courthouse on 3rd Ave SE. When you made this video were the 2 gaming stores still there? They were across from each other in the mall. One was for video games and game related collectibles. The other was about table top gaming, trading card games and collectibles for the hard-core nerd. My daughters used to love it when I took them there (they'd ask to go to the mall) just for those 2 stores. They'd spend hours looking at the used Nintendo DS games, pokemon plush toys, and the esoteric assortment of collectibles at those stores. Every time they'd ask for something and give me that look that only a daughter can that melts a daddy's heart and opens his wallet. I also bought the best bicycle I ever owned from the Dick's Sporting Goods there. I have some good memories of that mall with my girls.
