@@Randytherumblerthe Internet shopping basically killed most of these giant malls. Today people are too lazy to go out and buy stuff, it’s easier to sit down and order it from the Internet . Unless it’s something very specific or urgently needed , there’s almost none visiting such places . Here in Brazil we have these massive shopping centers in almost every major city , mostly are still active but when I remember how these places used to be back in the 80s and 90s, specially on weekends , full to the brim to the point you had to wait standing to find a place to eat in the food courts , also the cinema always full , many times had to wait next session to be able watching a blockbuster. I remember when The Matrix was released back in 99, I couldn’t find a place yo watch the first week …

Wow that was so great to see! I lived in the area up until about 12 years ago. Strawberry Square never quite took off. Initially they had a lot of high end stores but they weren’t supported. The food was always delicious. The clock was so awesome that was my favorite thing! Fun fact: on New Year’s they used to drop a giant strawberry like in New York with the ball. The lady who was doing the newscast was Valerie Pritchett who was a very prominent newscaster that I recall. Thanks so much for a look back at home!

Want a vintage, dying mall? Go an hour east of Harrisburg to the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing. A food court never updated from 1989 and a main concourse never updated from its 1970 opening.

Yes but... I like that they kept the vintage seating around the 4 posts in the center of the mall, although the fountain that had been there is long gone! I was just there last week; the fountain outside of the old Sears was shut off, and the water was drained.

I hear you. It's because they used to make these places with aesthetic architecture in mind designed to make people feel home with their cozy atmosphere. Alas, nowadays most of what we see everywhere is cold, mechanical and distant architecture devoid of life. Minimalism way past it's point to brutalism.

Always cool to see more coverage of malls integrated with non-retail institutions, like offices or education. One such mall up here in the Vancouver, BC area, Central City Surrey, has two floors of shopping, including several big box stores, with four levels of a university above it, acting as the main building of the major public uni's second campus. I'm also a big fan of over--the-street connecting walkways.

During the mid 80s there was a science museum off the alley. It had the “whispering gallery” voice radar dishes, forced perspective illusion room, and some of the other typical kids museum exhibits. Looks like it’s still there (Whitaker Center). That clock was pretty epic. Thanks for unlocking some memories Dan!

Harrisburg felt like the big city to this rural PA boy and the multi floor, Strawberry Square, was magical in my eyes. I never forgot the positive mark that experience left on me.

It's such a shame so many Malls are closed or closing, It Wasn't just about shopping it was about socialising, a lot people say amazon and online retail is to blame but it's also a lot of the stores having to pay overpriced rent, people not having as much disposable income, increased crime, the crash of 2008, the lockdowns of 2020, also there are a lot of areas which built too many malls in close proximity which caused over saturation, bit like Starbucks. I just hope they find good uses for Malls that are closing as so much time, effort, and money went into building these Malls.

I remember how lively Strawberry Square was when I was little. All that's gone now but I agree with you that it's been preserved well. The facades of the original buildings were along streets with fruit names. The buildings were brothels and cheap motels, I love that part. Eventually, the pink tiles on the outside of the Square started falling off and hitting people on the head....it was lovely for visitors. Thanks Dan for sharing this. Like you, it takes me back to my childhood.

Haaaaa, I don’t believe it! I’ve actually *been* to this mall before! I was in Harrisburg to retrieve some records from the state conservation office and they recommended Strawberry Square for lunch. I recognized that food court IMMEDIATELY. Pretty sure I ate at that pizza restaurant - this was maybe 12 years or so ago, so this place has been going strong for awhile. Soooooo stoked I can say I’ve been to a Dan Bell Dead Mall.

I was watching a walking tour of a mall opening up in Asia. It dawned on me why their malls are thriving. They put malls in downtown areas, so there's already foot traffic. They also build malls over subway and bus stations, bringing in more foot traffic. Most malls in the USA are way out in the suburbs with no public transit nearby, like the malls in my city (that are also dying btw)

This video is so interesting. I like that some developers are seeing the potential of the dying malls and converting them into usable space, like offices and living spaces. It’s smart because the setup is there to do a setup where it’s predominantly office space or living space, and they can use some of the space for a restaurant, a grocery store, or drug store.

Check out the Hanover mall an hour south of Harrisburg. There was a fire in one portion of it that’s now torn down, and the parking lot is being use for trailer storage. It is the definition of a dead mall and could make for an interesting video I think

It was never really a mall on the scale compared to other malls. It just had a handful of retail stores, the food court and some other restaurants and businesses. It was connected to the existing Pomeroy's in the early years until the 80s or early 90s but that was the only big store. In Strawberry Square's lifetime, that area of Harrisburg rolled up the sidewalks after workers left for the day so it mostly saw action during weekdays from workers and kids on field trips. It actually looks to be in pretty good shape post Covid. Many state workers started working remotely but Harrisburg University added a lot of life to the area.

Really well done, Dan! I went here a couple of times as a kid on school field trips from the State College area. There used to be a small science center on the second level I believe. Wonder if that used to be in the area you question being a movie theatre? And on the subject of State College, you ever consider a trip to the Nittany Mall? An older mall for being in the middle of Central PA, once home to four fairly decent anchors, possibly a mini casino in the future. But now, most certainly dead.

I was there as a kid in the early 90s. Mainly what I remember about that place was the clock and there also used to be the Museum of Scientific Discovery. In 2007 I applied through the state of Pa to become a part time liquor store clerk in the Chambersburg area. This was just before everything went strictly online. They sent me here to Strawberry Square to take a test for that job. Most of the state job openings sent you here for a test.

You may have been here as a kid for the Museum of Scientific Discovery, a really neat hands-on science learning zone for kids that has been gone for a little while. I also used to come here in high school in the 90s… it had a decent pool hall, back when the few others in the area were really sketchy.

Used to go to the museum of scientific discovery as a child before it moved to the Whitaker center. There used to be really neat shops there back in the day. Sad that the kinetic clock is being removed as it always fascinated me. Took the exams for my county c&y and clerical jobs there as well.

I’m fortunate enough to live in an area where my local malls have actually seen a boom in shopper. What had been keeping people away for a brief period was the uptick in smash and grabs. Cops finally put up a mobile command center for the holidays. City of Angels.

The mall local to me Brookwood Mall in Birmingham closed during the pandemic, wish you could’ve made a trip down to see it

Wasn’t a movie theater but there was a science center for kids that moved into its own building

I went to that Science Museum on a 4th grade class trip in 1990. Strawberry Square and Harrisburg felt magical to me then.

Our Mall in Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall had the sister sculpture a marble perpetual motion machine that was taken down in the early 2000's, the artist George Rhoads was a amazing guy.

Whitaker center for science and arts, the educational center where strawberry square is located. Which is good because at least when the mall actually does close. The space will be put to good use.
