Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales released earlier this year, and though it does have fun stuff in it, something about Captain Jack Sparrow felt wrong. Almost like it was not really him but someone else -- a fake impostor.
Thanks for watching. Leave your thoughts in the comments below. Should there be a Pirates of The Caribbean 6 with Davy Jones returning or is this the end of the franchise in your opinion?

@Lyoko012345
@Lyoko012345 4 жыл бұрын
It would be one thing if he purposely grabbed the rope himself and “water skied” across town but him being caught by the rope just felt situationally wrong. The only time he should be caught on a rope like that is in the middle of a chase either semi as part of his plan; like someone he knew would be there to rescue him using it to do so and Jack wasn’t expecting a rope to be the escape item. Or a random grunt lassos him but gets hit on the head before anything really comes of it/a short drag and quick escape with Jack now in possession of the rope.
@Predated2
@Predated2 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lyoko012345 Honestly, I would have been fine with it all, if there was a difference between Jack feeling like he failed and Jack getting his shit together again. It could have made perfect sense: Jack gave up, started drinking a lot and his ego alone of normally escaping everything the way he does would end up failing in every way possible. Having no control on what happens next, all up to the point where he gets saved from the guillotine and realizes that he actually almost died due to having a lack of control because of his drinking and giving up. If Jack changed after the guillotine scene, it would have fit in the movie, because the last time we've seen Jack so incredibly intoxicated and giving up yet somehow still escaping death, was when he and Elizabeth were stranded on that smugglers island. He was also very unJacklike on that island. So it would have made sense IF they reverted Jack's character after the extremely uncontrolled situation which he only barely escapes.

@WRaLxW
@WRaLxW 4 жыл бұрын

@thorragnarok8112
@thorragnarok8112 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the one of the most confusing parts. I mean if Disney tried to find a way to alter it it would be like the compass was given to him by the dead captain and when meeting tia dalma she truly altered the compass into the thing you want the most which is probably what she meant by giving him the compass it’s stupid I know but that’s one of the ways Disney would go to try and brush and that off, just my opinion. But I liked the concept of a jack sparrow who lost his way but how it was here, I don’t know I just wasn’t feeling it there might have been something they could’ve done better. But with the situation that Johnny was dealing with and how the movies were being handled without the original director and writers it didn’t feel the same but Johnny did a hell of a job with what he was given. To me what it made the 1st one so special was that jack was the supporting character and will and Elizabeth were the main characters, and jack sparrow you could truly see in that movie that this drunken act is a mask and is always three steps ahead so when they say that’s gotta be the best pirate I’ve ever seen they mean it especially in the 1st one. His wit was on point in the first one. Same for the second and third one but I felt they were kind of leaning a bit more toward his comedy than his wit, that’s how I feel personally. And while people might not enjoy the second or third that much than the first there is one common thing those three movies had, it was very witty in the sense of its dialogue, to me I felt the fourth and fifth one did not have that. It feels Disney is trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle with the first one, but you have to understand before potc came out in 2003, people could care less about pirate movies, the first one completely changed that opinion.

And in Dead Man’s Chest, it was written as canon (in a deleted scene) that Jack was branded as a pirate when he was in command of the Wicked Wench and Cuttler sent him to trade slaves and Jack released them. That’s a huge thing for his characterization, that he’s a pirate without being a pirate, and I really hate that they scrapped the narrative where he freed slaves for this movie

It definitely wasn't Johnny's best performances, he just wasn't there as you stated. I thought the same thing when I saw the movie. And recently after learning about what he went through during that time I can understand why. According to the cast Amber would start fights with him on the set and he would disappear with her to settle things. They said Johnny was miserable. I believe this was put in writing for their divorce case. To top it off, while filming they got into a fight at his penthouse where she through a whiskey bottle at his hand that was resting on a table and it literally took off part of his finger and he had to go to the hospital and ultimately had three surgeries on it plus he contacted MRSA three times. MRSA - Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus - is a bacterium that causes infections and is resistant to treatment. It can cause loss of limb and even death so it's no laughing matter. Johnny caught this 3 times and did not know if he would lose his finger, arm or even die. He was very sick, his wife literally beating him up and causing verbal arguments and just being unhappy in life in general it's no wonder he was "missing" in the movie. Looking back at the movie now, and knowing what I know through evidence, he did a great job considering what he was going through at the time. I feel for him.
@radrno7
@radrno7 4 жыл бұрын
THIS. To anyone that says Johnny is "a horrible person", "a waste of a human being" or "just a bad actor", they should read this entire paragraph and actually put themselves in his place. Imagine yourself, going through years, YEARS, of an abusive marriage, one in which the person you love, yes, Johnny actually loved Amber even after the abuses, went out cheating with other people while commiting multiple counts of aggression against you in and outside of work, AND on top of all of that, spreading rumors about you and making up fake evidences to accuse you of being the one that abused them. Meanwhile that, you have the history that people use against you, just telling you "you suck as an actor, you just play the same character, why are you still doing this?", without including the amount of people that probably started disrespecting you based on the recent *accusations* after the many years working and living with you, just because they HEARD about it. Then imagine having to deal with ALL of that emotional bargain, along with the hospital bills and medical issues, try to see yourself having to do what you do just for a paycheck, which could probably be the LAST paycheck you'll have because your entire reputation has just been set on fire because you actually tried to keep fighting to do your best with your wife and your carreer. And try to actually avoid being vocal about it out of respect because you're still trying, while your supposed "victim" is actually taking a shit in your bed (yes, that literally happened. Amber Heard is THAT crazy.) Be honest. Would you manage to do it?

@@atheistmando4976 my guess would be the intent of giving the compass? He is always reunited with the compass at the end of those so it could be that he didn't intend on letting them keep it, whereas when he gives it to the bartender, he's trading it, selling it, etc. He isn't going to get it back and I think that is why he hesitates before handing it over. For Tia Dalma, he could have asked her to hold on to it for him, Elizabeth, he was letting her borrow it, and as for Will and Beckett, it was intentional for his plan and maybe he assumed he would for sure get it back? But he doesn't trade it away when he hands it to those people compared to that of using it as payment for the bartender.

Ngl, I love the aesthetics and set up of this movie, Salazar was menacing and while maybe not a step up on Davy, he is still nonetheless menacing in a way that is his own, he even felt like a true nemesis to Jack, seeing as he was "anti-pirate" and Jack is the definition of the ultimate pirate only being contested by Barbossa himself. Unfortunately the movie's plot kept ruining both of these characters by making them act like total buffoons that only advances out of convenience, when their respective backstories says otherwise. Jack may have done some foolish things, but he would not go as far as to make a mistake of selling a life-long treasure for a bottle of rum.

That's the exact reason I don't like this movie, or at least the premise. Will having the curse removed downplays what Jack sacrificed to have Will be alive. Now it's a perfectly happy ending, instead of a lukewarm ending where everyone's alive, yes, but not everyone is where they want to be, which strengthens it by the fact it wasn't a perfect happy ending.

They screwed even Elizabeth's character up. We specifically see her hate for corsets from the first movie, and how it represents her being controlled. She chose freedom, she chose her own destiny, a pirate's life. And then at the end of the 5th movie, we see her IN A CORSET AGAIN?!? That just retconned her entire character that was built over the first 3 movies!

7:13 THIS. VERY. MOMENT. Is what makes me love that movie. That admiration in the eyes of the commander, sincerely acknowledging Jack as the greatest pirate. He just stole the best ship available with another guy without killing anyone. Everyone is frustrated because they have been tricked, but no one is truly despising him. You can bet the first time that movie came out, the audience was right there with that commander, admiring Jack's intellect, and his words were ours. I always come back to this moment because it is so precious, the character speaking what everyone's thinking. And then there's John Sparrow in Pirates V. Looks like Jack, but he really isn't.

Most of Johnny's best scenes in the movies were improvised. I heard the filmmakers never intended jack sparrow to be the character he was in the first few movies. Johnny made the character what he was, but it didn't make the filmmakers very happy. There were many issues on set between johnny and the producers, and I am not surprised that stranger tides and dead man tell no tales ended up the way they did. This is just how life works. Things happen, issues occur, and good things come to an end.

My theory is that he was dealing with a lot of shit in a mental health sort of way. As someone who also suffers from anxiety and depression, I see a lot of similarities between how I act when I'm feeling particularly down to how Johnny was on the set. The only difference being that he uses/used alcohol to numb his pain. I don't want to cause any arguments, but I do strongly believe that his wife at the time, Amber Heard, had a huge influence in hightening this issue. If you notice how Johnny looked/acted before his break up with Vanessa Paradis, then compare that to how he looked/act during his relationship with Amber, you can't deny that there is a big difference. I do think she was, in some way, mentally (maybe also physically) abusing him. With all of that, I understand how his performance wouldn't be on par with the rest of the franchise, but I did hear something about a 2nd part to this movie (it's just hearsay at this point) so I hope now that he's divorced her and she's dating some athlete (?), he can come back and give us the Captain Jack Sparrow we all know and love. This movie just had some unfortunate timing in terms of his performance.

They could’ve explained his new character traits if there was a scene where the first mate sat firm with Jack and said something like, “Jack, what the bloody hell has been wrong with you?” And Jack responds back with, “Nothing mate, I’m perfectly fine.” But then he proceeds to break down and cry. He then would explain, “I’ve lost so much, lost so many, but most of all I lost Will.” He would then explain he’s been drinking way more than usual in order to hid his pain and has lost himself. He’s been trying to hard to act like himself that has become someone different. He would then put down the rum (all be it not in entirety) and go back to being himself. It would have been perfect!

I agree with everything you said, but I would add that he lacks emotion. And no, I'm not talking about Jhonny Depp's acting, I'm talking about the few times Jack would show emotion/care for something or someone. He cared about his hat, compass, ship, and later learned to care for Elizabeth and Will. Seeing someone who cares only for himself show that kind of attachment made us feel as well. When he sees Will's death in the third movie, he changes his whole plan and gives up the thing he wanted the most just to save a friend. In this film, he trades the compass for no reason, doesn't react upon Barbosa's death, doesn't show real excitement when his ship is back, and at the end doesn't speak to Will or Elizabeth and even reacts like their reunion was nothing to him. Considering that in the third film he was the one that gave Elizabeth to Will, I would expect him to at least show a smile after their scene.

Come to think of it, maybe the reason why Jack wasn't Jack was simply because of the lack of motivation? He never had a really strong reason to do anything throughout the movie, unlike the other movies. Thus, without strong motivation Jack doesn't really care about anything, leading to this sad, depressing, unclever version of him. Still, would've been much better if they had actually given Jack a motive, so we could have had the proper *Captain* Jack Sparrow we all have come to appreciate.

I think they really made a mistake with the whole trident thing. I think they were too focused on the goal here, which is what the trident would bring, a clean slate. A clean slate, where Davy Jones, Will and Elizabeth, and Jack Sparrow are all free to roam the seas for another adventure with two new additional main characters. The problem with that though is, they were so focused on having that story about the trident be told, that they forgot the other aspects that make a Pirates of the Caribbean story so brilliant. Don't get me wrong, the plot about the trident is interesting as hell, but they should have just given it to a different company that could have made the best out of it and created a story of their own. Not a story attempting to be a Pirates of the Caribbean film, when all the concepts that make Pirates great is clearly not on screen. They made a pirate film, not a Pirates of the Caribbean film.

For me the PotC franchise is a trilogy. I don't care what anyone says, I am deeply fond of Dead Man's chest and even At World's End. Those three movies finalised some journeys: Will makes peace with his father being a pirate, becoming the captain of a supernatural ship himself; Elizabeth finds her desired adventure and shows a big middle finger to the prejudices of the time by becoming pirate king and marrying outside of high class society. Jack is explicitly confirmed as the thief with a heart of gold we all knew him to be when he put Will's life ahead of his own goal. (And as many have said, Jack works best as a side character, because that allows him to keep his mystique.) The big bad is defeated. You don't get higher stakes than Davy Jones. That is why the continuations felt so cheap.

I think another thing that wasn’t mentioned for why the movie wasn’t as great, although this has little to do with Jack’s character, was the soundtrack. Not having something so powerfully tied to the narrative, like Davy jones’ theme, really set the movie back. At least they used the song “One Day” for Will and Elizabeth’s reunion.

Here is another point to bring up about the “fallen hero” story: The the goal of the fallen hero is to reclaim or earn back their status/glory. In this, Jack doesn’t earn it back and he only reclaims it by a very narrow margin. His status/glory is more or less just given back to him without the satisfaction of earning it. Which in turn, leaves the audience unsatisfied as well.

But throughout the film, I feel like Barbossa's gonna die since his character found something remarkable in his life and the end he died. Like it was predictable. And I don't want barbossa to die 💔. Jack's main goal in the films has always been immortality, but him being a naturally good person (despite being a pirate) prevents him from ever achieving it. The thing that bothered me the most about this movie, was the fact that they (the moviemakers) knew how Jack Sparrow should behave. They showed very clearly that the younger Jack (who tricked Salazar) was very cunning and knew how to execute a tricky plan (turning the ship at the last moment with the anchor). That should have been a memory of Jack, literally the turning point for his character. He should have remembered how he out smarted Salazar and think to himself: "Time to bring out the ol' Captain Jack Sparrow!" A true return to form! Sadly that didn't happen. Oh well, at least we still have the other four movies!

While Johnny Depp can be forgiven for giving a less than stellar performance as he was going through some difficult personal issues at the time, the writers didn't seem to understand the character from the get go. Personally I've always assumed the problems with the Pirate movies after the first 3 was the removal of Gore Verbinski as director. The first 3 were masterpieces under Verbinski's direction, the 4th even with the same writers fell far short, and the 5th was a train wreck. Verbinski may not be the only reason that the first 3 were so superior but a director generally has a huge impact on a film for good or bad. It always has surprised me that very few ever comment about his removal from the series and it's quality going down so badly.

ThePope OfAwesomeness Angelia? The voodoo doll was thrown by the waterfall so it's possible for Angelia to create another voodoo doll but then again, they are madly love in each other.

HOLYFEAR96 I haven't seen the end scene after the credit is over. Well then! Angelica have the voodoo doll and Davy Jones' return which mean one thing! We have Pirates of the Caribbean Movie 6 coming up! I'd imagine that Captain Jack Sparrow will work together with Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann/Turner to find a powerful witch to help both Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner from dying and the chest where Elizabeth hid. That chest may be play a part of curse where Davy Jones perhaps will have his revenge against Will Turner. Perhaps we'll see Angelica, Henry, Carina and that bald witch girl again (Can't remember her name but she played in POTC:DMTNT)

Josh Storm can someone send this to Disney or anything. Because I hear there are planning for a 6th movie. I believe the fans should be the ones to steer them into the right directions.

What I think should've happened with the Robbery scene is this: We see a shot of him slowly wrapping his foot around the rope as the bank rolls away. He gives the one liner "I guess I am robbing a bank now" and then he pulls out a flintlock pistol, brings out a cloth and puts it in his bottle of alcohol. He lights it with his flintlock and smashes it down like a Molotov Cocktail, then the guards fire as soon as the rope pulls him while a fire goes up on the would be bank floor, blocking the guards from chasing him as he rolls away. Then the next scene happens.
