Sorry for the mispronunciation; since my neurological mishap my tongue doesn't work that well at times. The flower is pronounced with a soft SH. 😋
It's time to deadhead and prune your Shasta daisies so that you'll get a second wave of blooms. It's an easy process, all you need is a paper bag to collect the spent blossoms and a pair of sharp, clean snippers. When you're finished, feed and water your daisies then sit back and wait for the show to begin. Shasta daisies are a quadruple hybrid that were developed by Luther Burbank by blending Oxeye daisies, English field daisies, Japanese field daisies, and Portuguese field daisies in the late 1980's. Every garden must have some cheerful, white and yellow Shasta daisies. Happy gardening.

Your video helped me so much. I have daisies and I honestly thought that I was doing them a disservice by allowing them to look as they were. Little did I know that they just needed some deadheading. Thank you so very much for showing me exactly how to do that. Your sweet and steady voice also instilled a sense of confidence in me to get the job done. Since I'm in Chicago and you N.E. - I'd love to hear more about the storage location since many prairie natives require the freeze-thaw cycle to trigger germination. Our Milkweed is a great example of this since it's almost impossible to 'relocate' an established plant, there's a process involved in harvesting the pods before winter for spring plans

Hi I harvest my milkweed pods and send the seeds to the Monarch butterfly association. I will make a video about it. The mild winter we had caused many plants to break hibernation and I feared milkweed didn't get enough cold temps to allow for germination but I am thrilled to write i have a bumper crop. What in particular would you like me to discuss? 😄

Talk about great timing. I just planted 6 shasta daisies. I honestly had no idea they were bi-annual. I enjoy the flowers so much but sadden to realize they don't bloom annually. I'll double check mine today. Also, I transplanted PG hydrangea yesterday. Yes, it was hot :) but I needed to movie a roddie from an extremely shady area, which didn't take root. I hope my PG makes it but if not, oh well, I see it as an opportunity to buy another variety :)

Keep your hydrangea hydrated but not wet, which will help it develop strong roots before the winter season sets in.. Did you add compost to the hole? If not, work some in around the plant. Good luck I have several hydrangeas that need to be moved, my neighbor cut down some trees that have now put the bushes in direct sunlight but I'm going to wait until the spring to move them; it's too hot for me to work outside lately. Check the base of your chassis and see if they have basil growth down at the bottom of the stems that growth should give you flowers next season. Also check the label you may have purchased one of the newer perennial daisies that are on the market. Have a wonderful rest of your summer and thank you for always watching my videos. @@TinthiaClemant Oh yes, I did add compost. It's in its new home but it does show transplant shock. It's been on the crazy hot side so I am hopeful with regular watering it will perk up. Good news is, my shasta daisy "Becky" plants are all perennials. Yay for me :) lol Thanks for the wonderful and always useful informative videos you provide us! Best to you!

Hi this is my first time getting this type of plant, if I’m allowed to ask , when you first got the 2 gallons plant or Plant from garden center how do you take care of it!! Do I have to plant it deep, and how about water most of my plant during first year a water it tree times x week ? But with this plant there’s not much information

Thanks for this video! Last year after I deadheaded, the new little blossoms all seemed to turn brown before they shot up into new daisies. Any advice for how to make sure the second round of daisies happens? Is it possible because they need to be split they aren't as happy making flowers?

A lot depends on the dryness of the soil (make sure they are receiving adequate water) and how quickly you deadhead them. Try to deadhead as each blossom fades. I have found doing them all at once shocks the plant and I lose lots of second-round blossoms. Good luck and happy gardening. 🌼

Nice explanation. I have some mini-shasta daisies that I always deadhead, but they do not rebloom. However, I have never cut them back the way you do. I will try it next year. I hope it works with these since they are hybrid and not the original shasta variety.

@@TinthiaClemant Do your daisies ever bloom in October? I just saw a house with a huge clump of daisies in full bloom. I was really surprised because I thought they only bloomed in the summer.

Hi! Sorry should I cut the daisy once it's dry (but it's petals are still white) or should I cut it once it's color turned really dark? (Like in the video) I read in other websites that i should cut it when it starts to dry but I'm really confused. I'm new in the garden stuff and I really don't want to mess it up when I'm starting

Hi don’t worry about messing up gardening is all about experimenting and learning how to enjoy your plants. You can cut the blossoms whenever you want. I have found that if I wait too long to cut the spent blossom I don’t always get a new blossom so sometimes cutting a little earlier is better than later. Experiment with your plants cut a few and then cut a few more at a different time and you’ll find what your plant prefers. Relax and enjoy the process.Happy gardening 🌻

Hi thank you for your kind comment. I may not have explained how Shasta daisies work, and I apologize, you will get blossoms this year on the growth that was produced last year; that’s the growth that is at the base of the plant. And then while the plant is blooming this year it’s also laying growth for next year when you’ll get those blossoms. Biennials bloom on growth that was laid one year prior but you get blossoms every year. I hope I cleared up any confusion I may have created. Post if you still have questions. 🌻

My Shasta's have very few little buds on them, I cut them to new leafs but still haven't had a decent re-bloom (any recommendations?). They flower nicely during the initial bloom.

Hi, so this is the second bloom, correct? Sometimes they won’t bloom again; why I don’t know. My neighbor cuts hers back to about 6” and might get a second wave. Finicky plants. Try a blast of a bloom boosting food with more phosphorus than nitrogen and potassium. Keep me posted. Happy gardening 🌻

I just planted some from seed and put them out and was wondering why they wasn't blooming this year. they are putting on good growth just no blooms . Let's fast forward to next summer, I get blooms, will I get them the following summer too or do I have to wait two more seasons again?

Hello, great question. Once you get a year of growth you'll get flowers every year, or that's the plan at least. The flowers you get in 2023 will be from 2022's growth; 2023 will also lay down growth that will bloom 2024, and so on. The growth that eventually blooms comes from the basal collection of leaves at the base of the plant. I hope I helped. Happy gardening. 🌻

New to gardening: Do you have to let the seeds dry before planting or can you sow directly in the ground while deadheading?

Hi, to avoid the formation of mold, most seds should be mature.l, which typically results in them being dry. If your spent blossoms are dry and crumbly, go ahead and plant the seeds. Happy gardening. 🌻

question- I planted these last year, and should expect them to bloom this year. Will these bloom again next year (year 3)? or does the plant completely die after it blooms once? Or does it not bloom on year 3, and bloom year 4?

Hello, the plant will bloom or should bloom every year, but it is blooming on its second year growth. So for example, the stems that hold the flowers were set at that base leaf layer last year and that base leaf layer was hat you should see at the bottom of the plant will grow and bloom next year. If you’re missing the small buds you can cut them back about one-third and when you see new growth give them a blast of bloom boosting food. 🌺

Hi, sorry for saying the name incorrectly; sadly my neurological condition affects my pronunciation at times. The correct way to say Shasta is with a soft 'sh', not the hard 'ch' I am using but, arghhh!, I can't get my tongue to cooperate. I'm glad you enjoyed the video despite the mispronunciation. Hi, they should do well in Zone 9, the last of the hot zones for them. However, I must state as the zones are heating up they might not fair great but I would give them a go. Remember to water well until established. Good luck and happy gardening. 🌻

Sadly, mine were killed when my yard flooded this past December and January. I lost quite a few plants as a result of that flood. I love daisies. 🌸

If I don’t see new buds I cut the plant 1/3 down. Sometimes this rejuvenates the plant. When you see new growth give the plant a helping of a bloom booster food. 🐸

I've had my shastas for about 8 years. They have never rebloomed. I have deadheaded and pruned them down to just above the little baby buds, but those buds have never bloomed again. What am I doing wrong??

Hi, no, you’re not doing anything wrong. Sometimes Shastas won’t rebloom, no matter how careful we prune. It can be that particular cultivar causing the issue. My neighbor’s Shasta’s rebloom every summer but mine haven’t for the past two years. I’ve asked about it at my local nursery and the head gardener there blames the lack of reblooming on the dry conditions. You can try a bloom boosting food, like MiracleGro, and see if that kicks the plants into gear. I’m sorry I can’t offer a definitive answer. Happy gardening 🤞

@Tinthia Clemant aka River Lady no worries on a definitive answer. I've kinda just chalked it up as the plant being stubborn. It may be time to dig them up and try a new bunch. They've spread tremendously and they are close to 4 ft tall and constantly fall. Unfortunately, my garden faces east, so the sun pulls everything that way. The garden is blocked by the house from the westerly sun

@@mrpink3998 One of the presenters at the Hydrangea University I recently went to said, if a plant is not bringing you joy and is not performing the way you want, dig it up and toss it. Perhaps you might want to dig up the Daisy and split it and replant it someplace else instead of tossing it. Truthfully, gardening can be very frustrating. If you do buy a new daisy plant check out some of the wonderful new cultivars that are available. Go online And check out the new varieties. A lot of issues have been fixed like the not always re-blooming issue and dealing with fungus or insects. If your local nursery doesn’t carry the new cultivar you want to buy look for an online source.🌻

are Shasta daisies biannual? I thought they were perennials? I bought a container at home depot and it advertise them as perennials... I am new to gardening

Hi, they are a group of perennials called biennials. They bloom every year but on the second year's growth. The flowers you see this year were set in 2020. When they die back at the end of the blooming season you'll see a carpet of green leaves close to the ground. That tight chump is next year's flower base. Biennials are cool. Lamb's ear is another biennial. Happy gardening. 🌺

Although daisies can withstand dry conditions, they do need a deep drink at least once a week. Water at the base and around the perimeter of the clump. Try cutting back the clump and work some compost into the soil, being careful of the roots. Cover with a layer of mulch. However, before you do anything give a few of the stems a good tug; if the stems come out of the ground easily then the roots are infected and you would be wise to replace the clump. When I deadheaded my Shasta daisies the new blooms returned as black eyed Susans. Why was that?

Wow! I have never heard of that happening; they are two totally different species. Did the golden flowers of the black-eyed Susan’s bloom on the same stem as where the cut was mad? Or did it grow from the base? 🧐

I never see and buds forming to know where to deadhead them. I just follow the stem to where there is already another stem with a flower already . So basically I have two stems with a flower on them. 🤷‍♂️

It will depend on your cultivar. You can cut the stems about a third and when you see new growth fit some bloom boosting food. 🌻

Please 🙏 help. My Shasta Daisies are the only plant that are infested with aphids. I just saw some eggs on one this morning. So I pinch it off. So far this it's not as bad last year and before. This year I'm watching it like a hawk. In my zone in Canada we get a lot of rain.

Hi, you can spray Neem oil on the plant or Garden Safe insecticide. A friend of mine uses Been oil but I use Garden Safe. Be sure to get under the leaves as well. Once you have an infestation it takes a bit of time for you to get it under control continue to pinch off any areas that you see covered with aphids and the best way to dispose of the aphids is to put the vegetation, I’m sorry to say this, in a plastic bag and close it tightly and put it in your trash. Don’t just throw the vegetation into a side area of your yard. You’ll want to spray nearby plants, even if they don’t have aphids. This will help you gain control of the situation. @@tiffanienguyen7174 hi, don’t do both Neem Oil, which you can get at Home Depot, and Garden Safe. You might stress the plant. Also don’t put the clippings in the towns compost because the aphids could survive and the compost will become infected. It might seem silly but better to be safe for other gardeners. Dump the clippings in the trash. If you buy Neem Oil you will need a spray bottle unless you can find a spray form. Good luck. 💕
