As a Christian myself, you don’t really understand what that attack was about. It was much less about Islam and more about anti Russia government. Putin turned the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) into another branch of the Russian government for all intents and purposes. Putin oppressed other religions, including other Christian denominations, on behalf of the ROC, and in return the ROC preaches Putin agenda as if it’s holy scripture. In fact, Putin passed an anti proselytizing law, which he uses to shut down other Christian denomination churches, like Baptist, Lutheran, etc., all of em, on behalf of the ROC. By Putin allowing the ROC to wield the power of the Russian government, he’s turned that particular Christian denomination into a legitimate target for anti government militias. If you understand the history and politics of Dagestan, the tribal politics, government politics, etc., it’s very complicated but you’d understand how branding this as an Islamic attack is an extreme oversimplification. They’re first and foremost anti Russian government actors overall, with some Islamic loyalties second, but that’s really about tribal politics and power struggles in that region, they’re not Islamic state loyalties. If you’ll notice, they timed the attack for the churches to be empty (6am), not during mass. They weren’t targeting Christians, they were targeting the ROC. The one priest and 3 church workers were unavoidable casualties. They weren’t specifically targeted. The whole church attacks were to draw out law enforcement. That’s who they were specifically targeting. That’s why so many officers were taken out, of em. That, with the multiple ROC church burnings while empty, it a message meant for Putin, not Christians. However, I don’t know the politics of that one Synagogue, or what type is was, or what connections it may have to the Russian government, if any. As a Christian myself, I don’t like seeing how many Christian channels are using this ‘Islam extremist/Christian persecution’ fear mongering type framing. It’s opportunistic and it’s disingenuous. It’s also harmful to all religions involved.
