Highly recommend you get a job in a wrecking yard to start then move on to an independent repair shop you'll learn about the different manufacturers at an independent shop vs a dealership where you're limited to one brand. Some time at a specialty shop or two will round out your knowledge base. Electrical diagnostics, diesel, even transmissions. There's plenty to learn and it takes time. Good luck.

My son bought a fancy Ford F150 with the V6 diesel engine. It was around the 60,000 mark. He was driving from work when all hell broke lose. The crank snapped 😱. The truck was still under warranty. It took over 4 months to get the truck back. Ford ordered a short block, heads, and other components separately for whatever reason. The technician working on it told my son that he didn't understand why Ford and the dealership went that route because they had a complete new engine in stock.
@CPsGarage

How they order parts is up to the Cost- Cap Tool. it was either cheaper or more parts were available.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA Ай бұрын
Probably because the warranty would pay more labour rate if they did it the kit route, instead of ordering a crate engine, which has the labour part included in the price only for install. They wanted to bill the extra 100 hours of doing all the assembly instead, as they could charge for the removal time as well per part. ie Remove head labour, remove oil pan labour, then remove engine complete labour, which was the only thing needed. Basically a warranty scam.

@@gmailcgs under warranty Ford requires a cost-cap filled out. Whatever broken parts are added. Ford will look at parts available, warranty times, and other stuff and the Cost-cap will spit out a decision and that's what the dealership has to do. On Sunday, I saw a video from the YT site 'LR Time' that also disassembled the same engine model that had blown and had a similar failure. The timing belt was replaced but was off by 4 degrees. They believe that the engine didn't have the oil changed often enough or didn't use the right oil. LR Time is a married couple in their early 50's in Germany who narrate their work in excellent American English and have a great sense of humor between them. They apparently have some sick love for Land Rover products, have a lift in their driveway, and several LR vehicles and projects. He is a technician/engineer who's work is with balancing drive train parts (like driveshafts) for new vehicles.

I noticed the piston cooler nozzle was missing on the bad cylinder. Whether it was knocked off by the piston failure, or it fell beforehand and that was what caused the failure would be nice to know. Loss of cooling oil to the cylinder could easily cause the piston failure. If the cooler knozzle could be located, that could tell the tale of what happened to it.

It actually was brand loyalty. Ford owned jaguar and land rover in 2004. They sold everything including Mazda, Volvo, and Aston Martin in 2008 when the housing market crashed. I don't know if you remember the term too big to fail. So Mercedes bought Chrysler Ford sold all of is subsidiaries and the government gave gm an illegal loan to keep them from going under. So in that Era there were a lot of cross platforms. The charger/ challenger are older e classes. Ford explorers and Taurus were Volvo s60, and saabs were gm trailblazers and Subaru wrx's. There are still contracts from that time. That's why that engine is what Ford used. They owned the design more then likely, or at least paid for the design.

Mercedes bought Chrysler in 1998; sold them off in 2007. Was Chrysler LLC at that point, owned by Cerberus Capital (who was helmed by Dan Quayle, aka VP Potatoe). When the slaughter of the "Great Recession" happened in 2008, both GM & Chrysler got government loans, Fiat bought half of Chrysler LLC and GM became 'Government Motors' and never recovered from that.

@@bobbg9041bad thing is the automotive industry knew of the emissions changes years ago and sum did create better engines that produce lower emissions but they drug there feet getting them into cars and trucks to help the consumer transition. Instead the V-8 has suffered due to incompetent lazy engineers in my opinion. So many viable ways to make the V-8 torque monsters and increase mileage and lower emissions. FCA stayed with cast iron blocks while GM and Ford years ago went aluminum. Now FCA has a straight 6 which has been in development for over 10 yrs and now in production

The engine failed when the valve train failed causing the exhaust valve to NOT open. This increased the compression ratio causing rapid wear of the piston and bearings with the subsequent failure of the conrod which then caused the rest of the damage. Exactly what failed in the valve train and in what order is difficult to say, but the observed movement of the pressed on cam lobe suggests that it was the initial point of failure and all other failures followed from there.
@jamesrudd6029
@jamesrudd6029 Ай бұрын
I’d agree with this as long as the journal on crank at failure point isn’t messed up I think connecting rod at big end broke free due to spin bearing potentially due to heat in crank as it appeared in video than subsequent revolutions broken connecting rod from piston while beating into head and oblonging small end which also snapped chain and moved valve lobe on cam

I think you are correct on the over tune killing the motor! But, the air intake you had wrong! The 3.0 was designed before the 6.7 ! That means the air intake for the 6.7 came from the 3.0 . Companies for many years have been bought and sold and many crossover items took place. Even longer the contracts have been in place, like a detuned Cummins for Dodge, International for Ford and lets not forget Isusu for GM ! Duramax= Isusu just like Yanmar=John Deere. Cummins actually designed the 25 thru 40 HP engine for Branson/TYM tractors. It's nothing to do with Brand Loyalty but buy outs and contracts !! Arods podcast group has become the "East Coast Motor Mafia" !! Great content as always from Ray! Several people have made a recommendation that a guy in the 7.3 powerstroke that's in Tampa pay you a visit!

The type of condition you find when someone fits a new piston without bothering, without all that costly 'engineering' work.

These engines happily blowing up since 2005. The love breaking cranks due to defficient oil being used. Jlr calls for 5w30 but as soon as it gets warmer thevoil breaks down. 5w40 helps to alleviate that issue. In South Africa i just use 15w40 because our climate allwos us to.

LR Time just done a strip down on same engine and it was due to a recent cambelt install that caused a missfire. then the recovery driver started it and bang went the engine.

They may have changed the oil, but over its lifetime that lower oil pan gunk says it was not well maintained. It needed a cheap oil change with engine flush, then removal of that bottom oil pan and cleanup probably 10K miles ago, it also needed a timing including chain replacement. They may have skipped the chain when they did the timing or the belt last longer than the chain, and poor oil maintenance killed the chain and the engine. Maybe a violent hit of the cam by a piston could break the chain, though the combination of the crank turning the chain while the cam gear is getting hit by a piston could break it. This engine was worn out and if it had less than 200K miles had bad oil maintenance.

A very good video! 😁👍 Could the 'lean burn' have heated the upper part of the piston to cause it to expand and actually seize in the bore and thus cause it to crack...?

In Europe the 2.7 and then the 3.0 diesel were found in jaguars, discovery 3/4 and range rovers. Cranks snap Rods break Oil pumps break at the tensioner mounting point. Lack of oil changes are major issues. Some fail after just 20,000 miles some last 300,000 It’s a Ford design used by Ford,jag,Landrover,Peugeot. In Europe they have DPF fitted, like a cat but for diesel, when they do a Re-Gen they inject more fuel to increase heat, some raw fuel passes into the oil, this dilutes the oil causing bearings to fail. All in all a good engine if you do oil changes ever 5-10,000 miles. If you look up LRTIME on KZfaq and watch the latest video you see they have the same issue. Excellent channel for all things discovery.

We watch LR Time and the majority of the issues listed were resolved when Ford decided to put them in the F-150. those are main gen 1 problems, this is a gen 2 engine and the land Rover actually received a lot of the update as the F150 got.

Not to be picky, but the Ecodiesel is the Italian built 3.0L diesel used in the Jeeps and Ram 1500's. The one in the Ford is a powerstroke 3.0L...... just saying.

And the Ford 3.0 v6 diesel is a collaboration engine with Peugeot. The VM Ram and the Lion Ford v6 engines both commit mechanical suicide with no warning. The VM ecodiesel has a whole bag of tricks to dienfrom like the hidden crap quality coolant hosebundernintake, broken cranks, slipped cam gears, and broken pistons like this one. I wonder if broken pistons are injector failures.

Bought me a nice truck from a dealer. They took it in after a bunch of piston material ended up through the oil pan. Then they took it in for the work needed and made sure it went past the 30 day mark. I will never buy from a used car dealer again! Oh and it lasted 3 days to begin with. Yay.
