We tackle the inevitable surface rust that rears its ugly head in humid environments. My small garage shop is not air conditioned so my tools are at the mercy of mother nature...but do they have to be? I go over a couple of different methods of removing this rust, plus 2 different products to protect those tools. My table saw and drill press table were showing signs of light surface rust so I needed to address it. I hope some of the information reviewed is useful to you guys in your shop endeavors.
In upcoming shop update videos I will give updates on the performance of these products as well as any learnings I've made along the way.
The second half of the video is a deep dive (i.e. nerd view) of humidity in a small shop. I want to see if a standard portable dehumidifier could actually lower the humidity in my shop...and guess what? IT DOES. I wanted to create a video that someone else could follow along and do the same analysis I did for my shop. I was able to lower the humidity in my garage shop from 60% to 30% in 6 hours on a 90F+ day. TIme will tell if the little fella can keep up on days with 70-80%+ humidity but it looks promising. In that 6 hour timeframe the dehumidifier was able to remove 6.5 Pints of water from the air, which is about 37% of its rated capacity (in theory)! It just might be the best $200 I've ever spent.
Follow along with Shop Nation as I build out my small garage shop into my dream workspace. I want to take you guys along my journey so you can get ideas and become inspired to do the same. Join Shop Nation in pursuing SHOP GREATNESS!

This is a great video for those of us in humid areas. Someone I know has an airplane in La Porte, just off of Galveston Bay, and he keeps 3 dehumidifiers running in his hangar 24/7. Airplane hangars are not very tight against air exchange. The difference in the deterioration of the aluminum and paint on his airplane compared to one of his neighbors that didn't have dehumidifiers was nothing short of amazing. The reduced humidity pretty much stopped any deterioration. I'm in Baytown, just a few miles away from Galveston Bay. My new workshop, in progress now, will be fully insulated and room finished with a mini split AC system. The insulation will slow any temperature changes and prevent condensation and I intend to run the AC any time it's not cold as we know it in the Houston area. I'll keep it at probably 82 degrees when I'm not working in the shop.

Travis, regarding your rust problem....it's not entirely due to the humidity. I noticed in a previous video that you store your pool chemicals in your garage/shop. That is a BIG killer as far as the finish on your tools. Not just your work surfaces either. Left long enough it will have an impact even on your tools in your cabinets. Long story short, things like shocks and other oxidizers will do just that...increase the rate of oxidation of the iron on the surface of your tools. Just a tip. Keep up the great work.

I moved to South Florida about 9 years ago and all my tools began to rust immediately. After using steal wool and putting several coats of paste wax on them, they continued to rust. I didn’t crunch any numbers. I just went to Home Depot and bought a dehumidifier just like yours and cracked it up. I set it at 55 percent, attached a drain tube and ran it under the door. I haven’t had a rust problem since. My garage is approximately 650 sq. ft. And it keeps up no problem. The best part is that it’s is comfortable to work in there up to about 90 degrees due to the lack of humidity. Best/cheapest solution. Next will be the mini split.

Agree with other comments on here about choosing A/C over dehumidifier. Alot of times (not always), A/C is the way to go. Insulation and better compartmental sealing is also a great idea with only up-front cost and rewards for many years to come. Would like to see a follow-up on this video. Discussing the potential damage of high seasonal humidity was very educational. Thank you.

Hi guys! The relationship between the temperature of the steel, which warms slowly, and the ambient air temperature of your workshop, which can warm up quickly as the sun rise, causes a temperature difference, that pulls the moisture from the air, condensing on the cold, steel surfaces. This is why insulation is so important, in slowing ambient temps and allow the higher density of steel to “catch up”. Also, as the humidity rises, the temperature difference between the steel and the ambient can be less, increasing the chance of condensation and rusting. At 30% humidity, temperature difference can be about 11 deg c, but at 80% humidity it’s about 3 deg c!

Great video. I too live in Houston. Moved here from Wyoming where we didn't know what humidity was. All of my shop equipment rusted and seized up. Moved to Lake Conroe, bought some new tools, and see the rust starting again in less than a year. I have a very large 3 car + garage. My garage is also not insulated and to make matters worse it has stone on the exterior that seems to trap the heat and radiate it into the garage making it 10+ degrees warmer. I hope to insulate the ceiling this fall / winter and am on the hunt for a larger dehumidifier. Thanks!

Thank you for this! We are in San Antonio, from Wyoming, and new to humidity. I haven't noticed much rust on tools, but have on my 57 chevy project. I'm going to use ospho to remove that surface rust and primer until I can dig into the car. I've been curious about which dehumidifier to get and this helped a lot. I also used your cabinet plans to build lower cabinets. Thanks man, keep up the good work!!

I live in SW Florida. One thing I did was cover each piece of equipment with a heavy duty cloth. Bought an entire bolt from Walmart. For protection they have to be in direct contact with the surface. So a cutout for drill press table, 1 for the table saw and have to make one for my new band saw. I do agree with the dehumidifier idea as well. But I have a suggestion. If you want to put it on a shelf, install a flange fitting in the back of the bucket, "shelf on exterior wall". Then you can drill a little hole through the back of the dehumidifier and all the way through the wall. Place a 90° fitting where it comes out and extend it to the ground. Never empty it. And you can let it run all night. Some people have their air handler in the garage. For them, tap into the drain line. From my A/C tech neighbor. Pouring 1/4 cup of vinegar into the drain once a month prevents algae growth.

What a coincidence, I removed the rust on my jointer and drill press this afternoon and I'm watching your video this evening. Should have done the other way around :-) I used my orbital sander with 100 grit. Worked very well. Like you, I tried two different protections. First I used my usual Bostik Top-cote (I guess it's the same thing as Glide Cote) but wanted to try something different so I used CarPro Reload which is a hydrophobic silica sealant used on cars. The surface is super slick but only time will tell if it works well... Keep up your great shop awesomeness!

The water coming out of that dehumidifier is called "zero water" and is pretty good for plants. Living in SW FLA, I'd like to see you make a video that actually tested that de-humidification plan you want to have, as this wasn't really a test at all, but more or less a video about your research regarding it all (which was very good I might add). I just moved permanently down here from the Pacific NW, and this humidity attacking all my valuable tools has been quite an issue, so I'd really like to know about those coatings as well. I have heard about some sort of impregnated paper that people line their toolboxes with, even safes too to help absorb the moisture.
@Andy1dude
@Andy1dude 5 жыл бұрын
You really should just get an A/C unit for your garage. Your dehumidifier is already costing the same to purchase and operate (because it's doing the same thing), the only difference is that with the A/C, you at least get SOME cooling benefit, whereas the dehumidifier will actually raise the temperature in the garage. I insulated my garage door with 1/2" sheet insulation. It cost me about $50, and took like 2 hours. It's only R3.2, but that's a WHOLE lot better than nothing, and my shop stays well within a comfortable range, even on hot days (I live near Houston). Plus, these newer A/C units often come with an app, so you can have it run for an hour or two occasionally throughout the day/night just to make sure your humidity doesn't get too high.

Can’t argue with your points Andy, but here in Oz, the electricity is just too expensive! A dehumidifier draws far lower watts than an ac, and its thermostat responds to humidity, rather than temperature. Plus, they are only about 400 bucks.
@poppaluv
@poppaluv 4 жыл бұрын
@@Forexfox99 What Ac's do y'all have down under? a average sized DH costs about .04/hr an AC for a medium sized room costs .35-.70/hr.

poppaluv Yo, poppy, we have all of the popular named ac units down here. The problem is the cost of electricity to run them. Australia has the most expensive electricity in the world. I’d probably go with a small de-humidifier, for that reason.
@Andy1dude
@Andy1dude 4 жыл бұрын
@@Forexfox99 a dehumidifier and an AC are the same machine just in a slightly a different configuration, so it's the same cost to run for a given size. The difference is a dehumidifier adds heat to a room, where an air conditioner cools the room, while also dehumidifying.

Until I fully dehumidified by basement shop, I started using a product by Starrett called "M1". It is a light solvent which leaves behind a microscopic layer of lanolin. Great for ground table surfaces, instruments like micrometers, etc. Except for wood working, you don't need to wipe it at all. In a very humid area but 70pt dehumidifier is able to hold summer RH at 36%. The problem in New England is that some of our electric companies have had approvals for rate increase up to 117% on the energy charge. This may make it necessary to do a really good study on sealing off the space. One other suggestion, don't underestimate the importance of moving the air. I keep a 20" box fan running on low speed day and night to keep air moving in a big circle around the shop. Even with moderate RH, this can keep rust at bay.

Great video. I live in the UK but my son and his family live inn Katy. Now myself being in construction, lecturer in utilities, I have extended his AC into areas throughout his house not covered in the original build. I found it fairly simple as most of his ducting was the flexible type and in the attic space. Everything was available at Home Depot and relatively cheap. Have you thought about running an outlet to your garage and installing an auto damper that electrically closes the outlet when the garage door is raised. Include an overall manual control switch which you would use as there is no point in cooling your garage when not in there working.This would also solve your humidity problem and solve that sweat that seems to continually run down your face. Keep up the great work.

Your workshop doesn’t seem too large. What I did was empty mine one day and framed the internal walls with 3x2 solid slab insulation between studs. What’s great about this is you can run cables all over to where you want your machines. I then lined the front with 3/4 inch ply which is great for fixing anything to. I’m delighted with the finish.

Just extending the home a/c ducts to the garage seemed like a good idea to me also. I tried it and was disappointed however. In order to get close to enough cooling, I found a return air path was required. Shop dust got in the house so I added filters which worked pretty well but had to be very fine media and were more expensive and became restrictive pretty quickly when sanding. The last issue was smells, my wife complained when I was using paint, stains or other chemicals which is the time the humidity and temp control was most important. I ended up with a small 110v window unit. It struggles some when the outdoor temps are high but generally works well for my needs if I plan ahead. My largish two car garage stays comfortable even in the hottest South Alabama days. The only issue is the supply of power. Luckily, the areas power supply is split between two 15a breakers. I have tripped a breaker when running too many power hungry devices at the same time. Having the experience I have now, I could have saved some headache and expense to have simply ran a dedicated 220v receptacle near the window and gotten a properly sized unit in the first place. We don’t have a lot of cool weather here but I would also get a unit with a heating function to avoid the small “milk house” heater I sometimes run in the garage. It works fine but if you have just put a nice finish on something, keeping the shop warmer overnight is a good idea but I don’t trust those heaters to be left running unattended in that environment. On a related note, don’t forget smoke/fire detection in your shop area. I have a stand alone smoke/carbon monoxide detector and recently installed a Simply Safe system in my home so I included the smoke/fire alarm for the garage and added door triggers for the alarm as well. A garage full of tools is a big investment. I did trip the smoke alarm while doing some welding a couple of weeks ago but it’s a small inconvenience. With this system it is possible to disarm sensors for short time using a phone app. The shop is looking good! The new main cabinets are really sharp looking and functional.

Living in some very rainy areas of Hawaii (220 plus a year) for decades one thing is clear. Unless a room is sealed a lot of water going through the dehumidifier is not only from the room, but from any outside air coming into the room. They do help a lot though. When you eventually seal the space better obviously you will get more effective and efficient. Me and too much humidity don't get along. I oxidize. I ran the a/c and dehumidifier simultaneously during the rainy seasons in an older home with jalousie widows and no insulation. $600 plus a month in electric bills in ... Don't ask me to do math.

In Houston too. Neither products used have done any good for me. Good old Johnson’s paste wax and Hornady One Shot have been the best. The constant temperature change from opening and closing the door with an ac will make the problem worse down here. I’d imagine the dehumidifier would too. I could be wrong though. I think the best method I’ve tried so far has been using the Porter Cable/ Craftsman refinisher to clean the surface, heat the cast iron up with a torch just enough to sweat out the moisture from the porous cast iron and apply the paste wax while it’s still warm. It’s a lengthy process but has lasted the longest. Use Hornady One Shot (Bass Pro in the gun section) in between. I’ve even bought the Cerakote MicroSlick to apply to the tops but haven’t gotten around to applying. Carbon Method Carbon Coating is a newer product that shows to be promising too.

For an electronics lab space, I had gone so far as to run AC and a heater at the same time. Finally put in a small dehumidifier and raised the AC temperature. A higher temp, like 74 degrees, is comfortable when the RH has been pulled down. The AC and dehumidifier both cycle during the day, giving a good balance of conditions and cost.

I too live in Florida, and work "on the road", so I'm gone for months at a time, and every time I come home I have to spend the equivalent of a 40 hr week just to get all of my tools cleaned up. Of course the older I get, the more anal I am about any rust at all on my tools. I just will not use a tool if it has even the slightest amount of surface rust. It's to stop what I'm doing and go to the wire wheel, buffer, or 0000 steel wool and polish it out, because, steel that's polished and oiled will take, I'd say at least 5 times as long to develop any signs of rust. As you can imagine, I don't get a lot done. But hey, my tools look great !!

Oh and by the way, get you a wire cup wheel for your angle grinder, It makes the ones for a drill look stupid ! the best thing short of sand or bead blasting heavier, textured metals.

Now that it has been a year, how happy are you with this solution? I'm trying to decide between getting a ~$2-300 dehumidifier or just installing a mini-split.

What did you do? I need to tackle my garage this winter, in Houston area, no insulation, etc.

I bought a mini-split AC on ebay for $600 delivered. I paid $300 to install. It has a “Dry” mode that runs it just enough to removed humidity and when I’m working in there I use the full AC cool. I live in Florida where it’s really humid and have zero rust!

I use paste wax on my table saw. Also, random orbit palm sander works great to remove rust on the saw top.

Is there a dedicated wax for that, or is it a car, floor or any/all the above wax?

If he would have used an orbital sander on that table saw it would have been easier and more uniform. And a lot quicker ! Not knocking your work man, you did a great job. Just my two cents on it. Hell, when I was your age, I would have looked at someone like they were crazy if they even suggested I polish up my table saws deck ! My suggestion would have been to use the damn thing and it won't rust ! Lol

Question. Do you think that Delta saw is too much for a somewhat newbie? Check that....total newb with a table saw. I've gotten a lot of inspiration form your cabinet builds and want to do the same. Your channel is awesome. Keep up the good work.

No definitely not, having a larger saw is arguably better from a safety and usability standpoint. You won’t look back

Lanolin is the best, keep a paint brush greased up and lubricate every tool and cast iron surface.
@nheng6913
@nheng6913 Жыл бұрын
If you're into lanolin, try Starrett M1, aerosol or pump. It leaves a micro thin layer of lanolin that can remain on surfaces unless it's an issue for wood working. Pleasant smell for machinery lovers as well.

dehumidifier is an AC that vents its heat indoors which is not something you eant in a hot climate. AC wouod be better. you dont have to set it for a comfortable temperature. better, yet, use a humidistat to control when AC runs.

Mid viscosity gun grease on all metal. Coat it and no rust. Forget the oil. Long term grease is best.
