Dean perfected the drunk cool guy. It was the persona he went to after the break-up with Lewis and perfected with the Rat Pack. In fact, Dean was up every morning at 6am to play golf. Had dinner most every night with his family. Drank apple juice on stage, not Scotch. And had no problems leaving Sinatra and Co-who would drink into the wee hours-to go to bed.

He could never have been a top level golfer, golfing every day first thing in the morning, raised and trained Andalusian horses, had a successful TV show for 10 years, carried on with a successful roast show for years, spent 10 years suffering with Jerry Lewis and making $$ hand over fist -- if he had been a drunk. A lot of people ask the same question. When he broke off the partnership with Jerry Lewis he needed a reinvent himself. Before he became famous he used to open up for The Mills Brothers in the 40s and was kind of stiff and nervous up on stage. So Harry Mills suggested that he would light up a cigarette, and have a drink or two to come down your nerves before you go up on stage. So he kind of did that and it worked for him. And he was a type of person that if something worked, don't change it. And he said in interviews, I can't change it even if I wanted to because people expect that from me cuz now it's part of my image. In other words he was like another Foster Brooks. Though I will admit, it was getting old after a while.

Hi, Dean did drink, he admitted that many times. But he didn’t drink when working. This was his schtick. Every entertainer back then had a gimmick, Lucille Ball was the bumbler, Jack Benny was the tight wad, Sinatra was the swinger, Jerry Lewis was the idiot etc. Dean developed this character after he & Lewis split & a comedian named Joe E. Lewis, who did the same sort of drunk act retired. Dean did start drinking more heavily after his son was killed in 1987. If you pay attention to his quick wit during this clip you’ll know someone who’s drunk couldn’t do that. He always had a relaxed even lackadaisical way of speaking & that helped his drunk act a lot. Also, that’s his real hair. His dad also had thick hair.
